Young Eagles Update by Kris Olson

We will not be able to run our June Young Eagles rides event, due to the Coronavirus safety precautions.

EAA Chapter 25 has scholarship money towards EAA Air Academy summer camp 2021. EAA has cancelled all of the Air Academy camp sessions for Summer 2020.

Our chapter can transfer our reserved camp slot for the 12 and 13 year old camp from June 2020 to the summer 2021 session. It would be for a boy that would be 13 years old during the camp next summer. We are looking for a student that wants to attend the camp. Contact Kris Olson by June 26th, 2020 to receive our scholarship towards the Summer 2021 camp.

Zenith 701 Project Update

I have been very busy working on the Zenith 701 panel with the help of Ned Lebbons primarily at home in my shop and occasionally over at Jerry Shiroo's shop. The panel is coming along well. I fabricated a hinged avionics bay behind the panel to allow drop down access to fuses and the other mounted components.

The tail was found to be too high after testing the cable routing and control horn movement. We are fabricating the attach fittings for the 3rd and hopefully final time. Sound familiar to any of you builders? We purchased seats and they look and fit really well. Wiring the panel and fuel plumbing are the next major milestones in front of us. After that will be the boot cowl, windshield, doors, cowl, fitting and jigging of the wing. Paint and fly. Many details left so stay tuned.

ON FINAL EAA CHAPTER 25

AOPA Teacher Scholarship

Sunday, May 24th was a special day for me already. It was my birthday and the family was all assembled for the first time in quite a while. But things got real interesting when my phone went off and I glanced at the screen to see the words Congratulations… It was from the AOPA and they were sending notification to all of this year’s winners of the teacher flight scholarships. I have been selected for a $10,000 scholarship to learn to fly!

When I began an aviation class at our small private school 2 years ago, I had no grand scheme in mind. I just wanted to enhance my math classes with some STEM practical learning. But, to prepare for the class I joined chapter 25. I introduced myself, someone with no aviation experience - just a vision to teach an aviation class in my school – and was instantly taken in by a lot of interested, experienced and enthusiastic aviators. John Schmidt encouraged me from the start and told me of his years teaching high schoolers to fly, offering to help in any way he could. At the end of the conversation he asked if I was a pilot. “You will have to be a pilot to teach aviation… “. I didn’t believe him at the time, nor did I see a path to accomplish it, but two years later, after watching two of my students earn their private pilot license I found myself looking skyward every time one of those planes from flying cloud went overhead. Then along came the AOPA teacher scholarship program. After not being selected a year ago, I tried again this year. With a parent recommendation and EAA member, Kim Johnson’s recommendation, the second try was a success.

I have already started my flight school. I have completed a course to obtain an FAA certification as a ground school instructor. I will take some glider instruction at the and private flying lessons at AV8 flight school at Flying Cloud Airport. Some have suggested I keep a log of my experience and post it to the chapter. I will try to do that for my own benefit and will be happy to share it.

Thank you, chapter 25, for your encouragement in Question: my aviation experience. The wealth of experience On November 16, 1941, WWII US military in our chapter is invaluable to me and I look pilot Charles Bond wrote in his diary, in the forward to continued support and advice as I take Pacific Theatre: "Quite sore today. I to flight. suppose it was from pedaling into town for the paint to jazz up the airplanes." Soon Gene Poole Bond and his fellow pilots and mechanics United Christian Academy were painting one of the most famous logos Math and Aviation teacher in aviation on their airplanes. What was that signature logo?

ISLE AIRPORT REMAINS OPEN!

OPEN, BUT PRIVATE. We’ll take that “half Win”!!

Isle Airport IS NOT closing. The city council voted last evening to enforce the air easements to remove the tree obstructions. However, Isle Airport will remain a private use airport and our airport association agreed to fund the tree clearing. (The tree removal will likely not occur until fall so please exercise extreme caution)

Within the last few days, the state informed us that several homes were in the “clear zone”, an area within 1000’ of the threshold, and would need to be removed to meet public airport status. Not many folks, including myself, were in favor of removing homes to accomplish this. Why we were not made aware of this earlier I cannot say. We met many times since December with state Aeronautics reps as we were discussing the move to public status. In many of the presentations I gave over the last 5 months, I stated the trees were the only obstacle preventing public use. I apologize for my lack of complete knowledge of the situation. Therefore, the decision to remain private became our best option and one that was approved last night.

I hope we will continue working together to keep our membership growing, increase Isle Airport usage and participate in the fundraising effort we must begin to fund for the tree removal. The July 11 -12 city celebration, “Isle Days” has been cancelled. That is when our annual Flight breakfast is scheduled. We will likely need to reschedule that for later this summer so stand by for more information on that.

Finally, thank you all for your support over the past several months. The letters you wrote, the phone calls you made and the encouragement you provided all made a huge difference. We could not have accomplished this without your efforts.

ON FINAL EAA CHAPTER 25 WITTMAN REGIONAL AIRPORT Setting expectations for Oshkosh-bound pilots

Even with the cancellation of AirVenture 2020, some pilots have indicated that they intend to fly to Oshkosh that week as a personal tribute to the event or a way to maintain a long string of yearly logbook entries of KOSH (Wittman Regional Airport). EAA and Wittman Airport are making sure that pilots are fully informed and can manage expectations as to what is permissible if they arrive here. No EAA facilities or services will be available to them, and no aircraft camping will be allowed on airport grounds. Itinerant aircraft may park at the terminal/Basler FBO ramp. No permit has been obtained for aircraft parking or camping on any turf areas of the airfield and therefore is not permitted. There will be no access to EAA facilities from the airport, and EAA facilities such as Camp Scholler will remain closed to the public, as EAA did not On Final obtain a Wisconsin temporary campground permit this year Visit our website at eaa25.org and therefore cannot legally allow people to camp there. Trivia from pg. 4

Answer:

Seeing a British Tomahawk Mk. 1, named "Menace" in a magazine, Bond started painting the trademark nose art 'shark grin' on his, and many other, P-40 Warhawks for the American Volunteer Group (AVG 'Flying Tigers') in the Pacific Theatre.
