Anahtar Kelimeler: Roma İmparatorluğu, Kapadokya Eyaleti, Hıristiyanlık, Kapadokya Babaları. iv ABSTRACT REGİON of CAPPADOCİA inthe REİGN of ROMAN EMPİRE (A.D. III. and IV. Centuries) Fadime ÜNLÜ Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University, Instıtüte of SocialSciences, Department of History, M.B.A. August 2014 Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Kürşat KOÇAK When the region of Cappadocia was a province of Roman Empire , the borders of the region was reaching from North Mountains which formed the borders of Pontus Kingdom to Taurus Mountains and from west to east it was bordered from the river of Euphrates to the lake of Tatta and the state of Lycaonia. But as a province of Roman Empire sometimes the borders were enlarged and sometimes shrunken by disintegrations with the regulations. Region of Cappadocia became a province of Roman Empire at year of A.D. 17. Thereafter, the province of Cappadocia united with the province of Galatia at A.D. 54 but it remained in two different administrations. Even though Cappadocia was separated at the year of A.D. 66 it was reunited at A.D. 72 and called the province of Galatia-Cappadocia. The province of Galatia- Cappadocia was separated again at the year of A.D. 113 because it was very difficult to rule this united province for both governors and commanders. This separation caused changes at administrative structure; the rule of legatos which were chosen by emperor among old consuls began, started instead of the rule of procurators. East half of the province of Cappadocia which was enlarged with the new cities was added into Minor Armenia at the time of Emperor Diocletianus (A.D. 284-305). Emperor Valens (A.D. 364-378) divided Cappadocia into two parts as I and II at 371/372.A new province namely II. Armenia was constituted at the year of 386 and the east part of the Cappadocia was taken as a base for that province so the province of Cappadocia was shrunken more. Because the province of Cappadocia was on important ways and passing routes and its close position to east border, there were regular road construction works and the region was visited by emperors. Especially it had a significant location at Sassanid wars. At these wars Cappadocia as a province was exposed invasions and loots by Sassanids, Kindom of Palmira, Goths and Huns. v There was belief climate which contains plenty of gods and goddess at the region of Cappadocia. From Paganism to Pyrolatrist, from emperor cult to mountain cult there were various of believes which found follower. Christianity has affected the policy of the state since it has entered the territory of the Empire by being at the side or against of the state occasionally. According to the policies of Emperors Paganism or Christianity were exalted but the one on the opponent side was suppressed. Under this suppression three Cappadocian Fathers came out at the province of Cappadocia. Cappadocian Fathers known as Caesarian Basil, Gregory of Nyssa, Gregory of Nazianzus left important works as being witnesses of the time. At these works there is plenty of information from the belief of Christianity to social classes, from administration of Empire to the climate of the region. KeyWords:Roman Empire,Province of Cappadocia, Christianity, Cappadocian Fathers. vi ÖNSÖZ Roma İmparatorluğu Döneminde Kapadokya Bölgesi (M.S.

  • Preliminary Report to the Wilson Trustees on Two Journeys in Asia Minor, 1901 and 1902
PRELIMINARY REPORT TO THE WILSON TRUSTEES ON TWO JOURNEYS IN ASIA MINOR, 1901 AND 1902. I. As there are some features, which are now and are likely to remain unusual in my tenure of the Wilson Fellowship, I should begin by stating the motives which guided me in offering to undertake the work of the Fellowship. The Trustees are aware that, though the Fellowship has been long in existence, I am only the second Wilson Fellow ; but the conditions were peculiar and inelastic, and there was not everywhere among us a very strong desire to make the foundation a practical part of our Aberdeen School of Ancient Letters. I may take credit for having advised the first Fellow to take up the special path in which he attained such brilliant success, and especially for having suggested to him to apply for the Wilson Fellowship, and in some degree for having given him training in the methods of research for a year in Aberdeen before he was elected. In my actual application for the Fellowship, it would not have been right to do more than describe the work of research which I proposed to carry out with the Fellow- ship ; and the results of that work are briefly described in Part II. of this Report. But I desire now to lay before the Trustees the wider scheme which I had in mind, and which will, I trust, produce a series of Wilson Fellows who will be as distinguished as my predecessor was. My motive in returning to Asia Minor after ten years' absence was only in part to search for and to find the ΙΟ PRELIMINARY REPORT TO THE WILSON TRUSTEES answer to the problems that had been cropping up in the investigations and discussions of the intervening years, though that alone was quite sufficient to take me back as soon as there arose a prospect of finding the money neces- sary.

PAULINE AND OTHER STUDIES IN EARLY CHRISTIAN HISTORY BY W. M. RAM SAY, HoN. D.C.L., ETC. PROF~~SOR OF HUMANITY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN HODDER AND STOUGHTON LONDON MCMVI VI THE PERMANENCE OF RELIGION AT HOLY PLACES IN WESTERN ASIA II Tomb of a Christian Virgin of the Third Cent).lry (see p. 298). VI THE PERMANENCE OF RELIGION AT HOLY PLACES IN WESTERN ASIA IN the preceding article in this volume, describing the origin of the Ephesian cult of the Mother of God, the permanent attachment of religious awe to special localities was briefly mentioned. In that cult we found a survival or revival of the old paganism of Ephesus, viz., the worship of the Virgin Mother of Artemis. The persistence of those ancient be liefs and rites at the chief centres of paganism exercised so pro found an influence on the history of Christianity in Asia Minor, that it is well to give a more detailed account of the facts, though even this account can only be a brief survey of a few examples selected almost by chance out of the in numerable cases which occur in all parts of the country. I shall take as the foundation of this article a paper read to the Oriental Congress held at London in autumn, 1902, and buried in the Transactions of the Congress, developing and improving the ideas expressed in that paper, and enlarging the number of examples. The strength of the old pagan beliefs did not escape the attention of the Apostle Paul; and his views on the subject affected his action as a missionary in the cities of Asia Minor; and can be traced in his letters.

CHAPTER 38 THE GEOGRAPHY OF GALATIA Gal 1:2; Act 18:23; 1 Cor 16:1 Mark Wilson KEY POINTS • Galatia is both a region and a province in central Asia Minor. • The main cities of north Galatia were settled by the Gauls in the third cen- tury bc. • The main cities of south Galatia were founded by the Greeks starting in the third century bc. • Galatia became a Roman province in 25 bc, and the Romans established colonies in many of its cities. • Pamphylia was part of Galatia in Paul’s day, so Perga and Attalia were cities in south Galatia. GALATIA AS A REGION and their families who migrated from Galatia is located in a basin in north-cen- Thrace in 278 bc. They had been invited tral Asia Minor that is largely flat and by Nicomedes I of Bithynia to serve as treeless. Within it are the headwaters of mercenaries in his army. DEFERRARI, Ph.D. OF THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA IN FOUR VOLUMES II nM^S 2) LONDON : WILLIAM HEINEMANN NEW YORK : G. P. PUTNAM'S SONS MCMXXVIII Printed in Great Britain BR (at)' PREFATORY NOTE St. Basil's letters in the present volume include numbers LIX to CLXXXV, and in nearly every ease are of great human interest. Highly technical letters, as, for example, on the Trinity or on the Canons, do not appear. All of the letters included here, with the exception of numbers LXIV and CII, appear in the MS. known as Coislinianus 237 (sig. = E). No letter of this volume, however, appears in any of the other MSS. collated by the author, i.e. Parisinus 506 (A), Parisinus 763 S (B), Parisinus 967 (C), Parisinus 1021 S (D), and Parisinus 1020 S (F). The last- named MS. (F), noted in the Benedictine edition as Harlaeanus, has since the time of that edition been greatly curtailed, a large portion at the end having been destroyed. This accounts for the appearance of readings from that MS. as noted by the Bene- dictine editors, and not as my own collations. Other important or interesting readings from the edition of the Benedictines have also been included in the critical apparatus. One probably important fact has been noted in the process of this work : the Benedictine editors frequently quoted readings as found only in the earlier editions (^editi antiqui), and apparently without any MS.

  • Callimachus and Callimacheanism in the Poetry of Gregory of Nazianzus
THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA Callimachus and Callimacheanism in the Poetry of Gregory of Nazianzus A DISSERTATION Submitted to the Faculty of the Department of Greek and Latin School of Arts and Sciences Of The Catholic University of America In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree Doctor of Philosophy © Copyright All Rights Reserved By Matthew Alexander Theris Poulos Washington, D.C. 2019 Callimachus and Callimacheanism in the Poetry of Gregory of Nazianzus Matthew Alexander Theris Poulos, PhD Director: William McCarthy, PhD In this study, I analyze the poetics of Gregory of Nazianzus (ca. 330–390 AD), who was one of the first Christian poets writing in Greek to leave an extensive corpus of poetry (about 17,000 lines). Gregory work is striking not only for its breadth but also for its wide variety of themes and metrical schemes. As my focal point, I have chosen Gregory’s reception and adaptation of the poetry and poetics of Callimachus of Cyrene (ca. 290–230 BC). Callimachus was the first poet in the western tradition to enunciate an aesthetic and came to typify for subsequent authors an approach to poetry that privileged finely-wrought, compressed, and erudite compositions. I argue that for Gregory, Callimachus’ works are more than simply one more source to exploit for nice turns of phrase; rather, Callimachus pervasively shapes Gregory’s entire approach to poetic composition. This is seen not only in Gregory’s allusions to Callimachean works, which are numerous and occur quite frequently in programmatic contexts, but also in features of Gregory’s work like poikilia (variety) and a strong authorial persona that have their best precedent in Callimachus’ variegated oeuvre.

Though a preface be a civility due to the following tract, the name of the author is reckoned much more significant than any preface. Those that knew the calmness of his disposition, and his sincere desire of contributing all that he could to the com- posure of those unhappy differences that have so long troubled the Christian church, will think this work very suitable to his design; and being so esteemed by divers judicious persons of his acquaintance, those in whose hands Ins papers are, have been pre- vailed with to send it abroad into the world with this assurance, that it is his whose name it bears. ECCLESIAE OCCIDENTALIS MONUMENTA IURIS ANTIQUISSIMA ed. C.H. Turner (Oxford, 1899-1939) Index of Names and Selected Words Corrected, revised, and extended 2008 by Philip R. Amidon, S.J. Creighton University [email protected] It has seemed opportune to republish this index in a corrected and extended version; there has been added to the list of names a list of selected words, and the method of referring to the text has been somewhat altered. The exact scope of C.H. Turner’s masterpiece is not immediately apparent from its title or subtitles (Canonum et conciliorum graecorum interpretationes latinae; Canones et concilia graeca ab antiquis interpretibus latine reddita). What one in fact finds here is an edition of the earliest surviving collections of church canons in Latin which are undoubtedly from the fourth century or have been assigned to it by at least some consensus of scholarship; some of them are translations from Greek, while others were originally drafted in Latin itself. Most of them, with the exception of the Apostolic Constitutions and Canons, are attributed to church councils. Turner, however, also offers a selection of doctrinal and historical material of enormous value, some of it indeed connected to the councils whose canons he edits; a comparison, for instance, of the creed contained in the synodical letter of the Council of Sardica with the Tomus Damasi, will suggest how far the doctrinal education of the western church advanced during the course of the fourth century. The connection of other historical matter to the canons is less obvious, however; one wonders what the Athanasian Historia acephala is doing here (granted that it is part of the collection of Theodosius the Deacon), however grateful one is to have the edition.
