Good Luck for the St Patrick’s College Confraternity Cup and QISSN teams Once again, this July holidays, students from the College will be competing in the Confraternity Rugby League and QISSSN Netball competitions. We wish the players, coaches and support staff a safe, fun and successful week. Everybody has a gift they can share with the world. Some are great leaders others are good workers. Some are parents who mould us as we grow and some give their talents to serving God. Some are musicians who bring joy through music; others are athletes who instil passion through their performances.

We all have gift, it is up to us to choose how we use it. Playing a sport like Rugby League is an opportunity to share our gifts.

WHAT I LEARNT FROM PLAYING RUGBY LEAGUE

1. Show Respect Whether it be the referee, your teammate or your opposite number, rugby teaches you to show them respect.

2. You have to play through the pain Rugby teaches players that the best way to deal with pain is to get straight back on your feet and try again. You are not going to learn your lesson if you keep being pandered to over the slightest cut or bruise.

3. Life’s better when you stick together Rugby is one of the most team oriented sports in the world where the only way to win is to work together as a unit to overcome any obstacles put in your way. Rugby teaches you how to effectively work with others and that achieving your goals as part of a team is much more rewarding than doing so as an individual.

4. Good things come to those who wait Rugby teaches you that if you spend the whole game running around trying to get involved you’re going to end up dead on your feet and become ineffective. Instead wait for the perfect opportunity to make your move and trust those around you to do their jobs.

5. The little things are what really count Whilst it may be the tries and big hits that take the headlines, anyone who has been around rugby for a while will know that these are mere window dressings. It is the hard work in the middle or the covering defence that win you games. Rugby helps you appreciate the little things in life that little bit more.

6. Life does not come with a Safety Manual In rugby players have little to no protection despite engaging in some of the most physical contests in the sporting world. Much like in life there is no cushion to protect you from heavy blows, instead you are reliant on your own resilience to get you through.

7. Passion and commitment are everything Anyone doing something in life, much like in rugby will never reach the best of their abilities unless they dive in with their heart and soul. As in life, with rugby if you make a run or attempt a tackle without fully committing you’re never going to come off as well as if you put everything into it.

A READING FROM FIRST CORINTHIANS

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. (1 Corinthians 12:1-11)

McDonald’s Mathematics Team Challenge Two teams from St Patrick’s College competed in the McDonald’s Mathematics Team Challenge held at Whitsunday Anglican School on the Monday 21 May. Teams of five students from most schools in the Mackay region came together to compete with each other and to test their combined mathematical skills. In total there were over 150 students competing in three age divisions (Beginning, Junior and Senior). The teams compete in two sections, one with ten questions, which the students work on together as a whole team and a second, where the students work in pairs to complete twenty more questions in a relay.

The teams from St Patrick’s College consisted of JunHong Liu, Zachary Hunt, Gabrielle Perkins, Abbey Deguara and Madeleine Francis, plus Thomas Lando, Isaac Lange, Riley Nicholas, Michael Manera and Dylan Taylor. Both teams represented the College with distinction and are to be congratulated for their efforts.

Thanks also to Miss Susan de Haas for her efforts in preparing the teams and accompanying them on the day of the competition.

Two examples of the questions the students attempted are shown below:

Team Question 1 (T1) The number 9, 474 has the unusual property where the sum of its digits raised to the fourth power equals the number. 94 + 44 + 74 + 44 = 9,474 There are two more four-digit numbers with this property. (The digits are also raised to the fourth power). What is one of these numbers?

Relay Question 15 (R15) Bart has a six-digit locker number that consists of three consecutive two-digit odd numbers. The first two-digit number is a perfect square with exactly 5 factors. What is Bart’s locker number?

(Answers: T8 = 8,208 or 1,634, R8 = 81 83 85)

Last week the Languages department took 22 language students from Mercy College, St Mary’s and St Patrick’s College to attend the Young Language Ambassador Conference at James Cook University in Townsville. The conference theme this year was “Know Who You Are: Internationally-Minded Young Tropical Leaders”. Students had the opportunity to listen to many interesting speakers and fellow students talk about their experience with learning different languages.

I hope that the students who attended the conference can now become Young Language Ambassadors amongst their peers and school communities. Challenge yourself, share your passion with others and with the help of your dedicated teachers continue to make positive contributions to our region and beyond.
