Surely , the hardy pioneer of the shorter route across the Atlantic, th e o u fi disc verer of the Elizabeth Islands , and the fo nder of the rst settlement of N e w E o of white men on the shores of ngland, to say n thing his services u in the Co ncil of the Virginia Company , in whose behalf he laid down his f a li e among the pestilent swamps of the lower Ches peake , deserves a better
