PEDIGREE INSIGHTS: ZARAK THE WEEKLY WRAP By Andrew Caulfield One of the bitterest lessons a racehorse owner must learn is that a brilliant racemare isn=t necessarily destined to become a brilliant broodmare. Fortunately some do. Personal Ensign, a Breeders= Cup Distaff winner who was undefeated in 13 starts, produced three GI winners headed by My Flag (Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies) and one of Personal Ensign=s sons sired a and Preakness winner. Similarly, the great European mare Dahlia--a veteran of 48 races--showed no ill effects from her demanding career, producing four Group I winners and a pair of Group II scorers in a career which saw her produce her final foal at the age of 26. But there have been a few horror stories too. The 1980 Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk was 16 years old before she produced the first of her two live foals, while Coronation V, winner of the 1949 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe, was barren in each of her ten years as a broodmare. Of the other Arc-winning fillies, Ivanjica proved career-ending injury. The fact that he fractured his sesamoid in very disappointing but and respectively running a huge race which saw him finish so close to horses who produced the Group 3 winner Three Angels and the Group 2 started at significantly shorter prices than he did at Epsom hints winner Along All. On a much more positive note, the 1980 Arc that Wings Of Eagles had plenty of heart to go with his imposing winner produced three Group winners headed by good looks. However, the sharp-tongued curmudgeons of , who followed in his dam=s Arc-winning footsteps in Twitter have already consigned the Classic winner to the 1994. The 1981 winner produced three stakes National Hunt ranks, pointing to the fact that his own winners from four foals before being struck by lightning in Derby-winning sire Pour Moi--who was also the sire of Kentucky. EVEREST FEVER GETTING HOTTER Australian trainers are beginning to think seriously now about The Everest with many charting a course for the inaugural A$10m race in October. One example is Lees whose Le Romain (Aus) (Hard Spun) would be considered by many a lively candidate for the race. Already a three-time Group 1 winner including over the Everest course and distance when winning the G1 Canterbury BMW S. in March, Lees is hoping this proven course form will increase his chances of securing a berth for the race. Assuming this Le Romain | Racing And Sports happens the trainer is already eyeing the G2 Missile S. Aug. 5 as a starting point for the 4-year-old with the gelding also scheduled to take in a barrier trial at Wyong on Wednesday. AI'll probably trial him twice before he resumes in the Missile," Lees told Racing And Sports. When Le Romain was last seen in action he was beaten just a neck by Tivaci (Aus) (High Chaparral {Ire}) in the G1 All Aged S. over seven furlongs and Lees believes he has all the attributes to make a big impression in the Everest. AHe excels at Randwick and handles both good and wet ground. Freshened up for the 1200 metres, I've got no doubt he would be very competitive in The Everest,@ he added. The Australian Turf Club hold one slot for The Everest which they held open for tender until last Friday and another horse whose connections have expressed a strong interest in this slot is Global Glamour (Aus) (Star Witness {Aus}). James Bester represents the ownership group, which comprises a number of prominent female members of the international bloodstock community and he feels the dual Group 1 winner=s credentials are as solid as any other potential challenger. "Only four horses won multiple Group One races at 1600m or less last season - Winx, Black Heart Bart, Le Romain and Global Glamour. Of those, only Global Glamour and Le Romain won Group races over the course and distance of The Everest," Bester said of the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained filly.
