he weather across the country has been a wintery disaster for Texas and many Tother places. Here in Arizona it has been a little colder than usual but nothing like other parts of the country. We are so lucky to enjoy Arizona weather when it comes to Porsche driving.

Our Treffen Chair and Driving Tour Chair Rook Younger, has been busy along with his team preparing for the Scottsdale’s Treffen event. By the time you read this, registration for Treffen will have come and gone. Hopefully, all of you that wanted to sign up were able to register successfully. Rook has planned a great set of six driving tours for the Treffen attendees. I’m sure it will be awesome. The dates are May 5 – 8.

The Arizona Region is also running some other driving tours for those of you who are not signing up for Treffen. They include:

March 13 – Sedona Red Rock Country Tour March 21 – Charity Drive to Boyce Thompson Arboretum (near Superior, AZ) April 10 – Drive to Cottonwood via Mingus Mountain/Historic Jerome

These events fill up quickly and do have a limit on the number of cars allowed so sign up early !

The Arizona Region is planning on running the Flight Concours event this year on November 6. Since this event is closer to the end of the year, we hope COVID-19 circumstances will have abated enough to allow the event to occur.

At the Board of Directors meeting this week it was mentioned that we should consider planning and resuming our typical club social events (Porsches and Pancakes, in person Monthly meetings etc.). We have scheduled a Porsches and Pancakes at Anthem Golf and Country Club on Oct 16. Hopefully, by the fall the vaccination implementation will be well underway and the COVID-19 infection rate will have significantly declined by then allowing a normal resumption of events.

We are always in need of volunteers. If you can spare some time and would like to help support our club please reach out to me at [email protected]

Our March Monthly Meeting will be online and will be held on Wednesday, March3rd at 6:00 pm.

Coming Soon: We will be adding to our club website a new feature “My Favorite Drive”. We are asking members to reach out and share their favorite local drives (including distance, directions etc.) so all members can enjoy in them on their own. Please forward them to [email protected]

Drive Safely.

id you get your Covid-19 vaccination? We were lucky to get appointments last month at Walgreen’s Din Mesa. Neither one of us had any adverse reactions. Second shot scheduled for mid March. With any luck we might be able to start planning some social gatherings. But in the meantime, Rook has been busy scheduling many drives as part of planning to get ready for Treffen in May. Make sure you sign up quickly because these drives always fill up. There is still time to get in on some DEs and Autocross events before the season ends.

This month we have reached 1999 members in our region. Where are all these Porsche members? We would love to meet you at an upcoming Monthly Membership Meeting call or at one of our other events. If you have any questions at all, reach out to any of the Board members or chairs.

This month the winner for the Writer’s Monthly Award for Going Places is Mark Howell for “Our First PCA Driving Tour.” He will receive a $30. credit on MotorsportReg, which is good for one year to use on any AZPCA activity. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to write articles and taking pictures at our AZPCA events for Going Places because without your stories and articles, it would be pretty difficult to publish our monthly newsletter.

I too am greatful for our wonderful winter weather in Arizona, so we can enjoy driving our Porsches year round.

Looking forward to lots of fun AZPCA events! Hope to see you soon.

Angela

Sedona Red Rock Country Tour Saturday, March 13, 2021

Experience the beauty of Arizona Red Rock Country on this tour to Sedona, known the world over for its spectacular scenery. The red rocks, buttes, and spires are named for familiar items they resemble, such as Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Coffee Pot Rock. The route for this tour will take us to Sedona via the Black Canyon Highway, leaving the Sonoran Desert for the higher elevations of the Central Arizona mountains and canyons.

We will follow the Red Rock Scenic Byway to our final destination, Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village. Lunch is on your own. There are several restaurants in the Tlaquepaque Village and many other good options elsewhere in Sedona.

After lunch you may want to continue on Highway 89-A through West Sedona to the winding road through Page Springs to Cornville, then back on I-17 to the Valley. Or you may want to return via the scenic byway, where multiple pullouts offer more opportunities for views of the beautiful red rock formations.

Attendance is limited, so register soon, as this drive is sure to sell out.

Hey Motorsport Enthusiasts, Here are the results from our first auto cross of the year, January 30th . One chart shows all the runs that were made that day with the other showing Top Time of Day for both cars with street tires and race tires, which represents that person’s quickest run for the day. Thank you Rick for compiling them.

We had a number of close battles, including for top time, with Steve E. wrapping up TTOD. Congrat’s to Steve. Also a big shout out to the folks who helped with set up on Friday and with tear down after the event, extremely appreciated. Thanks again and hope you can make our February event (it is almost 3/4 filled up as I type this)! Kind regards, Kim and Rick

GOING PLACES 83.2021 | 19 | Spotless... by Jim Bultema, Director At Large

Clay Bar Detailing

n this article I will explain why and when to use a clay bar on your Porsche. If you have missed my previous Itips, please go to https://az.pca.org/newsletter/ and you will find how to clean your wheels, equipment to use for detailing your ride and how to properly wash it. And while we’re at it, how about a shoutout to Angela Manente, the talented editor of “Going Places,” who each month for the past several years unselfishly puts this award-winning newsletter out for us to enjoy. Thank you, Angela!

For some of you just hearing the words “clay bar” will give you tribulations and have you skipping this step in your car detailing ritual. I would suggest not so fast. Guys, a clay bar’s purpose in the hierarchy of making your car Spotless…it’s simply a paint cleaner. A clay bar’s purpose for existence is to remove bonded contamination and pollutants from the surface of your paint. When used properly, the clay bar itself never touches your paint. No, it only glides over your finish with the use of a lubrication, usually just a simple detail spray.

What you should understand, is that it does not remove paint imperfections such as swirl marks or scratches. It also won’t improve the shine. What it does do is remove the grunge so you can realize a bright, clear finish that is ready to be waxed. It’s amazing that you can polish your car for hours and I guarantee that you it won’t feel as slick and smooth as it does after just a few minutes with a clay bar. The biggest benefit is that waxing becomes so much easier and more effective over the smooth slick finish, allowing the wax to do its job, and making for a tighter finish that lasts longer and looks cool.

How to Properly Utilize a Clay Bar As I have said with all aspects of cleaning your car, it’s important to read the instructions of the product you are using. The same is true with a clay bar. While they are easy to use, make a mistake and you could scuff the surface of your paint.

So, follow these simple rules:

· First, thoroughly clean and dry your car to remove dirt and grime.

| 20 | · Keep your car out of direct sunlight and the cooler the area the better to prevent rapid evaporation of the clay bar lubricant.

· To use a clay bar, spray a lubricant on a small area and rub the clay bar back and forth with light to medium pressure. Keep the detailing spray coming and be careful it does not dry out and do not use dry.

· After a short time, rub your hand over the area you just cleaned and feel for any misses. There is a distinct difference between the areas you have cleaned and those you haven’t. These will feel rough and bumpy. Simply go over that section again and work in small areas.

· When you have completed this, wipe the lubricant residue off with your soft microfiber towel, and buff to a nice luster.

· As you work, check the clay bar frequently for any hard particles it might have picked up. When found, pick them off. Make it habit to manipulate and reform the bar often trying to keep a fresh part of the bar on your paint.

· If you should drop the bar, I would suggest tossing it as it will do its job when it hits the ground and pickup nasty things you don’t want rubbing around on your car’s finish.

· With these steps completed you are ready to apply your favorite wax to seal the deal. I will discuss this in my next article.

GOING PLACES 83.2021 | 21 | Our First PCA Driving Tour... by Mark Howell photos by Jan Mackulak and Dennis Rood

s newbies, my wife and I hoped to arrive earlier than the A9 a.m. start time to assess the scene and maybe make an acquaintance or two, but after a last-minute bagel stop and a road construction delay, we got to the meeting spot just a few minutes before show time.

We found a welcoming-but-socially-distanced crowd of people collected around thirty-three cars spanning perhaps 50 years of the marque. A couple air-cooled 911s... a 944 Turbo to represent the transaxle line... but mostly late nineties up to showroom new. All looked and sounded well looked-after. My rain-spotted, brake-dusted Boxster could have won the award for dirtiest car... if there were such an award. Would it be self-serving to suggest it?

The weather was clear and maybe a bit on the cool side at first for having the top down, but that’s how I like to go, as long as frostbite is not a risk.

For the first stage of the drive we fell in behind a 911 Speedster. This was a happy accident. I could listen to that motor sing all day, and judging from the throttle-blipping downshifts, the driver felt the same: A sonata in the key of GT3. Another reason for us to have the top down.

Early in the drive, while working our way through downtown Rook, Our Tour Meister! Scottsdale, we had a right turn in a construction zone. As we approached, I watched the Speedster turn, saw the temporary no-right-turn sign, and then the oft-suppressed rule-follower in me seized this moment of glory... and I went straight. Thanks to the quick-witted cat herders in the Macan, who waved us back in place as we improvised our way back to the route.

We wound our way up through North Scottsdale to Rio Verde road, and then less-settled, more open country on the long descent to the valley of the Verde River, through Rio Verde and Fountain Hills, with vistas of landmarks like Superstition Mountains, Weavers Needle, and Four Peaks, and the surrounding wilderness, to the first stop. A young gent standing next to his parked sport bike in the parking lot seemed to enjoy the surprise appearance of a flash mob of Porsches around him.

We continued on the Beeline towards Mesa, then through scenic Usery Pass Road and Bush Highway to the second stop. I used this stage to generously offer the cat herds a second opportunity to work their craft. I picked the wrong exit on a roundabout despite abundantly clear instructions. Thanks to (Richard?) in the silver Boxster, who became our wingman.

In the last stage we managed to roll out behind a 911 SC and enjoyed some air-cooled sounds for a while until traffic shuffled the order a bit. In the closing cruise through the Fort McDowell On the road to Fountain Hills.

Possibly you can miss three turns. I’ll let you know next time.

ur first driving tour of 2021 took 22 Porsches on a leisurely in-town route to the top of South Mountain, where the view from ODobbins Lookout provided a dramatic panorama of the Valley of the Sun. Summit Road is a scenic, 5.5-mile drive from the main park entrance, terminating at Dobbins Lookout, at 2330 feet the highest viewing stop in the park. The view not only includes the Valley floor below but a panoramic sweep that extends from the Estrella Mountains in the west to the Superstition Mountains in the east.

Taking the scenic drive back down the mountain, we went across town to the Biltmore area and drove by the Wrigley Mansion and Arizona Biltmore Hotel. At the end of the “official” tour everyone was on their own for lunch. There were many good options available in the Biltmore area. See you on the next drive!

’d say it was a successful warm up to Valentine’s Day out at Arizona Motorsports Park. AZPCA hosted another track Iday at AMP on February 13th as a pre-Valentine’s Day date with your favorite girl in the garage. Good turnout with friendly people, great weather (aside for the wind at the very end of the day), and fast cars. The perfect way to spend a Saturday.

There are usually several first-timers and there was no exception at this event. Instructors were paired up with students and showed them how to navigate the 16 turns at Arizona Motorsports Park via lead/follow instruction. Lead/Follow is a method of instruction where the student drives their own car, while the instructor “leads” them around the track in their car. Typically, the instructor will switch places with the student after a couple sessions, so the student ends up leading the instructor, and the instructor can provide guidance from behind via a Bluetooth communicator. Lead/Follow instruction is very new to our DE program for new students as it has only been approved by PCA National this past year. It’s adoption has been paramount to continuing the DE program’s instruction program during the pandemic and we are very pleased how well it has worked out and the success we have seen with it.

At the track though, sometimes a mechanical issue can bubble to the surface. After the first session, one of the instructors (and a good friend), was experiencing a braking issue on their non-Porsche car (his wife had the Porsche that day). Since it would not be safe to continue providing instruction using their car, I enlisted them with my new car so they could instruct their student the remainder of the day. With the odometer just showing around 150 miles on her, the track would be the break-in period. But for those of you that go by the manual on break-in procedures, don’t worry, it was also a non-Porsche, so if it blows up, no Porsche was harmed in the process. I attempted to also conduct a moderate break-in at the track, but when you’re at the track, restraint for those kinds of procedures proves impossible. Perhaps a second blown up GT350 is in my future… well, whaddya expect from a Ford…

Our next event (and last one until October) is on Saturday, April 17th . We’ll be at Arizona Motorsports Park running the course counter-clockwise for the second time this season. We hope to have another great turnout and conclusion to our 2020/2021 season until the fall kicks off. Our next season will include AMP, Inde Motorsports Park, and we are working to get an event at Wild Horse Pass. However, the summer is too long to wait- we hope to see you in April!

Hey Motorsport Enthusiasts,

ere are the results from our February 20, 2021 Autocross at Arizona Motorsports Park. One chart shows all the runs that were made that day Hwith the other showing Top Time of Day which represents that person’s quickest run for the day. Each cone that is knocked down or outside the box adds two seconds to the time, so being fast and tidy is important to a good run.

The weather gods granted the type of weather we love in Arizona. Slightly cool in the morning and 70s in the afternoon. We had a large group of 45 drivers with a lot of spirited competition and places on the final results often separated by mere tenths or even hundredths of a second. Kim put down a blazing fast time in the morning and despite a number of valiant attempts by other drivers prevailed with Top Time of Day.

Pat the Hot Dog Lady served her usual fantastic hot dog lunch in a COVID safe manner. We also want to thank everyone that helped with course set up on Friday, which took a bit longer than normal and with all the folks who pitched in to help with tear down to make the event run smooth.

The AZPCA autox program continues during the winter, our next event is March 20.

Wanna have a Blast? Come join us! Sincerely, Rick & Kim
