DIRECTOR GENERAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT OPERATIONS

Brigadier-General Paul Rutherford joined the on 1 June 1980 and attended the Royal Military College of in Kingston graduating in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He earned a MA in International Studies from King's College London in 2010.

He served in various command and staff appointments. His formative years were spent with the 's 1st Canadian Signal Regiment from 1985 to 1989.

From 1989 to 1991, he was overseas with 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Germany as the Signals for the 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. From January 1995 until August 1997, Brigadier- General Rutherford served on Exchange with the at the Royal School of Signals.

Operationally, Brigadier-General Rutherford deployed with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights in 1988. In 1994, he served as Officer Commanding the Canadian Signal Squadron for Canada's deployment to Rwanda. From August 2006 until May 2007 he served in Headquarters ISAF in Kabul as the CJ6 Plans and Acting Chief CJ6.

His command appointments include 1 Line Troop from 1991 to 1993, the Combat Training Centre Signal Squadron from 1997 to 1999, 73 Communication Group in Edmonton from 2003 to 2005 and Base at Gagetown from 2011 to 2012.

Staff appointments include Adjutant of the 1st Canadian Division Headquarters and Signal Regiment, G6 for the Combat Training Centre, Directing Staff and Dean at the Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College, Director of Army Doctrine in Kingston, and Army Adviser, Canadian Defence Liaison Staff in London, UK.

He is a graduate of the Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College in 1992, the Canadian Forces Joint Command and Staff Program in 2000 and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London in 2009.

In September 2012, he was promoted to his present rank and appointed as Director General Security Transformation at National Defence Headquarters. From August 2013 to July 2015, he served at HQ United States Central Command in Tampa in the role of Deputy J5 Strategy, Policy, and Plans. As of July 2015, he assumed the role of Director General Information Management Operations at NDHQ.

Interests include fitness and sport, family activities, and walking his Great Dane.
