This is not one of the five obligatory prayers required of all Muslims, although the Islamic Prophet Muhammad was recorded as regularly performing tahajjud prayers and encouraging his comrades. Evidence in the Koran In Fiqh al-Sunna, Sheikh Sayyid Sabiq details on the theme of Tahajjud as follows: And during part of the night, stay awake from prayer. This goes beyond what lies with you; maybe your Lord will lift you to the position of great glory. Al-Istra 17:79 And those who pass the night, prostrate before their Lord and standing. Al-Furqan 25:64 Evidence in Hadith Next to these Koranic verses, there are also a number of hadiths (narrated and confirmed by the tradition of Muhammad) that reinforce the importance of Tahajad'ud's prayer. In various hadiths, he was mentioned as Siamul Leil (standing nights), Salatul Leil (prayer of the night) and Tahajjud. The recommended time to perform tahajjud means the act of lifting from sleep at night and then praying. Tahajjud can be performed in the early part of the night, in the middle of the night or in the later part of the night, but after the obligatory prayer of Isha. Commenting on this topic, Ibn Hajar says: there was no specific time during which the Prophet (peace and blessings would be upon him) would perform his late night prayer; but he used to do everything that was easier for him. The best time for tahajjud is the last third part of the night. (Abu Huraira: Fickh) Amr ibn Absah claimed to have heard Muhammad speak: the closest servant comes to his Lord in the middle of the last part If you can be among those who remember Allah the High at the time, then do so.- At-Tirmidhi Number rak'ahs Tahajjud Prayer does not entail a certain number of rak'ahs that must be fulfilled, and there is no maximum limit that can be fulfilled. It would have been accomplished even if one had prayed only one rak'ah Witr after 'Ishaa'; however, he traditionally prayed with at least two rak'at, which is known as a shif'a followed witr, as is what Muhammad did. nd to fajrAbdullah ibn Umar said that Muhammad said: Salatul Leil (Night Prayer, ie Tahajjud) is offered as two rak'at followed by two rak'at and (so on) and if someone is afraid of the approaching dawn (Fajjd prayer) he must pray one'at, and it will be a witr for all. Buhari, Hadith 990 Health Effects Tahajjud protects against one of the factors that leads to cardiovascular disease. Sleep for a long period of time non-stop increases the risk of heart disease, especially atherosclerosis, which paves the way for angina attacks. References to - to understanding the Koran. The Holy Qur’an – Arabic Text, English Translation and Commentary by Ayatullah Aqa Mirza Mahdi Pooya. Tahajjud Prayers – Salat al–Layl [Namaz-e-Shab] IMPORTANCE The Tahajjud Prayer (Salat al-Layl, Namaz-e-Shab) ranks first and foremost in importance among all other optional (Sunnat) prayers. Tahajjud means to abandon sleep so as to pray Salat. The Qur’an refers to it in Surah 17:79 and says, “And (during part) of the night, abandon sleep and keep vigil to pray Salat, in addition to the regular obligatory prayer. Your Rabb (the Sustainer) may (as a reward) elevate you to the position of High Distinction, Glory and Praise.” The Prophet (s.a.w.w.) said, “I will be at “Maqam-e-Mahmuda” on the Day of Resurrection when I will seek forgiveness for the sinners from the Rabb (the Sustainer) who does what He wills.” We, as sinners, would also wish to receive intercession and are forgiven so as to be in the company of the Prophet (s.a.w.w.) on that Fearful Day.
