© QSM October 201 8 - Issue 26 WELL DONE HUGH TAYLOR !!! Q SQUASH NEWS 2018 Q OPEN Preview

I’m so looking forward to the 2018 Queensland Open. How fantastic is it to see Low Wee Wern as the #1 seed for the event. If you get the chance, this is one player well worth watching.

The former World #5 is on the comeback trail and has already won the Malaysian Open, Tasmanian Open and the Australian Open this year.

She has just returned from the World Team Championships where she played 5 matches and won them all. Unfortunately, her Malaysian team finished 6th.

Evan Williams from NZ is the #1 seed in the Men’s draw. The Kiwi will be wanting to make up for his early departure in 2017 where he lost in the quarters to Queenslander Matty Hopkins.

The day was filled with great matches with many players learning from SEIZE their opponents where they need to improve. The high level of skills with THE which these juniors play is great! The novices were also showing their LIGHT skills and one day will be the Division 1 players of the future. CRAIG STEWART The Division 1 finals did not disappoint. For the photographer, the match of the day was the semi-final between Luke Eyles and Number 1 seed Cameron Darton. Luke was fresh from defeating the number 3 seed Oscar Deakin in the previous round.

As the match progressed, Luke seemed to get stronger towards the end of each game hitting the ball just that little bit harder at the right time to come away with the win in 3 games. The results of the tournament helping players towards that coveted 2019 Vipers Shirt.

A BIG THANK YOU to our sponsors: Karakal, Logan City Council and Fitter Futures .

SEIZE THE LIGHT CRAIG STEWART

Story by Craig Stewart

The Grand Final of the Winter Season of Brisbane Premier League was played at the Wavell Squash Centre between the Sandgate Sandflies and Stafford.

At the end of the regular season, the Stafford Team was on top with 242 points with the Sandgate Sandflies a close 2nd with 237 points. This meant today's tie could go either way.

The matches were high quality. As each match finished, the momentum swung one way and then the other. The Number 3's kicked off the afternoon action. After the first match, it was Sandgate who took the lead.

The second match saw the Number 1's take to the court. It was high intensity driving and drop shots. The tie was level.

The Number 4's were up next next. Sandgate getting the upper hand after a long 3rd game. 2 rubbers to 1.

Finally, the Number 2's took to the court to decide the tie. Sandgate needing two games to seal the deal or Stafford needing a 3-0 win. Stafford got the 3-0 win to take the premiership.

Thanks to the referees for the tie: Bradley Hindle and Solayman Nowrozi (Daisy Hill). This Event will showcase all the up and coming Champions blooding themselves on the World Tour in an effort to get into the upper echelons of the game.

Evan Williams the No 1 Seed for the Tournament will head up the list of Men coming from all over the World.

Williams lost his semi final last year to Dimitri Steinmann but Steinmann could not over come eventual winner Lau Tsz Kwan from Hong Kong.

Local hope Steve Finitsis is always in with a good chance of an upset having made the final in 2016.

The local event looks like being strong and well attended with Northern Region junior stars BJ McDonald and Wes Dyer attempting to knock off the local guns, Forster, Gwynne and Krauss.

All in all the Cairns International promises to be a fantastic event to play in or see the Pros going hard at it in the name of squash!
