Greeting & Introductory Rites

Gloria

First Reading Reading 11 KGS 19:16B, 19 -21 Reader: Tim Murtaugh The LORD said to Elijah: "You shall anoint Elisha, son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah, as prophet to succeed you."

Elijah set out and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat, as he was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen; he was following the twelfth. Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him. Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, "Please, let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, and I will follow you." Elijah answered, "Go back! Have I done anything to you?" Elisha left him, and taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them; he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh, and gave it to his people to eat. Then Elisha left and followed Elijah as his attendant.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 16

Second Reading 2GAL 5:1, 13 -18 Reader: Brian Solmos Brothers and sisters: For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.

For you were called for freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love. For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. But if you go on biting and devouring one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another.

I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh. For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want. But if you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Gospel Acclamation

Gospel Luke 9:51 -62

When the days for Jesus' being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?" Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village.

As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus answered him, "Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head."

And to another he said, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, let me go first and bury my father." But he answered him, "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." And another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home." To him Jesus said, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.

Profession of Faith

We believe in God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfilment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Page 10 St. Joseph Parish History St. Joseph Parish is the oldest on the North Shore, formally recognized as a parish on November 21, 1845 by Bishop William Quarter, the first Bishop of . It had humble origins as the “Log Cabin Mission” that served the early German Catholic immigrants from Trier, Germany, in what was then called Grosse Pointe. These pioneers fled to America to escape the oppression of their government and to practice their faith freely. The 20x30 foot Log Cabin was named for their patron saint, St. Joseph. The spiritual needs of the early parishioners (1844 - 1872) were served by ten priests, some who stayed a few months, and others a few years. Finally, in 1865, Father Bernard Haskermann was assigned to the parish and began construction of a new stone church. Unfortunately, he resigned midway through construction when funding ran out.

Luckily, Father William Netstraeter was assigned at St. Joseph in 1872. He is recognized as the first official Pastor of St. Joseph, and served for a remarkable 51 years. His Pastorate was historically intertwined with many major events in the village of Wilmette. Father Netstraeter was also a Trustee of the first Wilmette Village Board and was one of the Founders of New Trier High School.

Many talented men came after Father Netstraeter, each bring unique talents and skills to help build this parish to what it is today.

Here is a list of pastors that served at St. Joseph Church.

Monsignor (1923 -1964)

Monsignor Charles Meter (1964 -1981)

Father Donald Cusack (1982 - 1993)

Bishop Francis Kane (1993 - 2003)

Monsignor John Pollard (2003 - 2010)

Father Robert F. Tonelli (2010 to 2016)

Msgr. Daniel Mayall (2016 -2019)

Father Wayne F. Watts (2019)

We welcomed our newest pastor, Fr. Wayne Watts, on January 1st, 2019. He spent many months getting to know the parishioners and preparing the church and school for the Renew My Church process. This was a program created by the Archdiocese to have parishes unite together and become one strong and vibrant parish.

As of July 1, 2019, Fr. Wayne Watts will not only be the last pastor for St. Joseph Parish in Wilmette, but he will also be the first pastor for the united, Saints Joseph and Francis Xavier Parish of Wilmette.

Page 11 St. Francis Xavier Parish History On June 26, 1904, the first Sunday Mass for the newly formed St. Francis Xavier Parish was said in a building located at 1213 Wilmette Avenue. Under the direction of Fr. Edmund Byrnes, the parish was formed to serve English -speaking families in the area, because both St. Joseph’s Church to the west and Sacred Heart Church to the north conducted their services in German.

Land was purchased at the intersection of 9th Street and Linden Avenue, and on October 3, 1904, construction of a red brick and limestone church was begun. Although the structure was far from complete, the first Mass was celebrated in the building on Christmas Day, 1904. It was dedicated on June 19, 1905. A rectory was completed in 1907, and work was begun on a combination school and convent in 1909. St. Francis Xavier School was opened on January 13, 1910, with 37 students who were taught by four Sisters of Providence. The Sisters of Providence served the parish for 80 years.

The church and school prospered and grew, and soon a second Sunday Mass was added along with additions to the school and the rectory. Construction of the current school building was begun in 1924.

Demands of an expanding parish soon called for a new Church. A formal closing of the old church was held Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938. The cornerstone of today’s church was laid on August 18, 1938. While the church was under construction, Sunday Mass was offered in the Woman’s Club of Wilmette building, and daily Mass was held in a chapel on the school’s second floor. On May 14, 1939, Cardinal Mundelein dedicated the current church building.

Continued growth of the parish and school resulted in construction of a new convent for the Sisters of Providence which was dedicated in December 1949. An addition to the school, including classrooms, the Xavier Room, and a combination gymnasium/auditorium was completed in October 1956 – opening the door to a peak school enrollment of 740 students in 1962.

As the scope of our ministry increased, the old rectory could no longer contain all the pastoral activities. The parish decided to renovate an unused portion of the convent, making room for parish offices.

As of June 2019, the parish growth has continued with 1,570 families registered at St. Francis Xavier. Over 460 children attend the parish school which has recently undergone a large renovation to include individual classrooms for Foreign Language, STEM, Music and Art as well an expanded Gym and other updated multi -use spaces. This new parish building is also used by our Parish Religious Education Program and other parish ministries. Our most recent Parish Religious Education Program for 2018 -2019 had a registration of over 400 children.

Our past has yielded a strong foundation of faith and activism by our parish community and we look forward to uniting with St. Joseph Parish to form a vibrant Wilmette Catholic community.
