They seemed to be at loggerheads all the time.’ 1 he inter-war years were distinguished by marked changes that affected the lives and neighbourhoods of Tmany working class men and women. These changes would prove to have positive and negative implications for working-class family life. New employment opportunities extended the breadth of jobs open to working class people, espe- cially in the new consumer industries that employed significant numbers of women. Correspondingly, the commercialisation of leisure expanded the possibilities of pleasure. Information on birth control and the greater ease of availability of contraceptives also offered a better potential to postpone marriage and reduce family size. Yet, the new employment opportunities did little to alter the ‘pin money’ wages of women and women’s economic dependency on marriage. Marriage was still seen as an attractive alternative to employment in the longer term.2 Marriage and motherhood were actively promoted as the natural and fulfilling aspirations for women by the state, state agencies, the clergy, religious organisations and the media. Adding to the appeal was the ideal of the ‘companionate marriage’ in which husbands were expected to share chores, child-care, leisure and provide love and companionship. It seems that this was a ‘fairly norma- tive’ aspiration amongst many sectors of the working class between the wars, at least amongst women. Change, however, was not just ideological.3 After World War I, the building of ‘homes fit for heroes’ and the growth of ‘new garden cities’, were linked with ideals of the companionate marriage, maternalism, privacy, respectable domesticity and the growth of male home- centred pastimes.

Many people anticipate that their first visit to a sexual health clinic will be traumatic and they may feel stigmatised by having to attend. Clinicians should be aware that some information they give may be distressing to the client. For both groups the feeling of distress or discomfort is understandable, and it is the job of the clinic staff to help them to manage it. Empowerment rather than treatment is the preferred goal; different people will try to cope in a variety of ways. Some clients may present with aggressive/threatening behaviour not necessarily in relation to their mental health and it is vital to identify the underlying cause for appropriate action. As before, it lists the parishes of the Church of Scotland and the congregations of the United Presbyterian Church (and its constituent denominations), the Free Church (1843–1900) and the United Free Church (1900–29) whose names have completely disappeared, largely as a consequence of union. This list is not intended to be ‘a comprehensive guide to readjustment in the Church of Scotland’. Its purpose is to assist those who are trying to identify the present-day successor of a former parish or congregation whose name is now wholly out of use and which can therefore no longer be easily traced. The motorway, combined with the Clyde, creates the impression of a “walled city” and in some ways creates a barrier which separates elements of the city centre which were never designed to be separated. The eastern edge of the city centre is less clearly defined and is the historic heart of the city, however while fragments of its historic roots remain its new identity is yet to be fully formed. The River Clyde acts as a barrier in its current condition with a lack of activity on both sides creating an inhospitable environment, and the Clyde is not yet a destination in its own right. While the City Centre Strategy will be based on the Development Plan boundary, it will also include areas that lie on the edge which are strategically important despite falling outwith the official boundary.
