TECHNO / ACID USA The second release on TB Arthur's (312) label finds the mysterious artist revealing a collaborative project with Magda as Blotter Trax. The pair first encountered each other at the famous Motor City record store A1 Record Time, when Detroit artist BMG introduced his then co-workers Magda and Derek Plaslaiko to Arthur, who was visiting the shop from Chicago. Sometime after that meeting, Magda and Arthur went into the studio and jammed together for a week, the session was recorded live on analog 1/4" tape and then three tracks were selected for release. 1A is six and a half minutes of modulated synth sounds that are psyched B1 out and sci-fi, spooky and truly atmospheric. Full of cerebral cinematism, acid lines and ghoulish textures all add up to a truly standout track. 2A then marries dark wave pops and clicks, unsettling alien lifeforms and menacing, slo motion industrial drums into a physical and imposing groover riddled with paranoid sirens and drones. A1 Pitch Black Mirror is the new full length album from industrial techno veterans Orphx, co-presented by Sonic A2 Groove (2xLP + digital) and Hands (CD). Rich Oddie and Christina Sealey have created a diverse and A3 distinctive body of work over the last 23 years and this album may be their most definitive statement yet. Pitch Black Mirror foregrounds the duo's unique fusion of techno and industrial but also demonstrates their B1 ability to continually push their sound in new and challenging directions by drawing on elements of electro, B2 post-punk, and EBM. The human voice is a central element here, ranging from subtle layers of samples and C1 location recordings to the more prominent vocals of Rich Oddie and guest vocalist Marie Davidson. The C2 album is also notable for its detailed sound design, courtesy of Sealey's modular synthesizer systems, Oddie's percussion and synth work, and software mutations from founding Orphx member Aron West.
