Welcome to Our Asian Studies Visiting Scholar Professor Karl Fields

Greetings! I am pleased to have this opportunity to share with you a bit about who I am and what I have been doing here at Hang Seng Management College. I am a professor of Asian Politics with an appointment as Distinguished Professor in the Asian Studies Program and Department of Politics and Government at the University of Puget Sound, a small, liberal arts college in Tacoma, Washington (about 50 kilometers south of Seattle). I have been teaching at the college for nearly 30 years, since receiving my Ph.D. in Asian Politics from the University of California at Berkeley. I grew up riding horses and chasing cows on a cattle ranch in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. I was first introduced to Asia when at the age of 19 I served as a volunteer for my church in Taiwan for two years. I learned Mandarin Chinese, fell in love with Chinese food, and became fascinated with Chinese politics (I was living in Taiwan when President Jimmy Carter cut-off US diplomatic relations with the Republic of China in Taiwan in favor of the People’s Republic of China). My wife Melanie (who has joined me here in this semester) also graduated from UC Berkeley and we have four grown children. I am here at HSMC with a one-semester appointment as the first Asian Studies Visiting Scholar and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience! I have taught one module on the Government and Politics of China and have found the opportunity particularly rewarding. I am accustomed to teaching American students who have little experience with China, so teaching Hong Kong students whose families have had intimate experience with Chinese politics has been fascinating. I have also taken full advantage of the academic community here to pursue my own research interests. Last fall, Melanie and I had the opportunity to lead a group of students from my college on a semester-long study abroad program through eight Asian countries. As part of that program, I taught a course on the politics of identity in . Based on the success of that course, I am now researching the ways in which ethnic Chinese governments and societies imagine and express their national identity through monuments and memorials. I am particularly interested in the historical figures of Tianhou (天后), Zheng Cheng- gong, (鄭成功), Sun Yat-sen (孫中山) and Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石). I want to especially express my appreciation to colleagues in the Department of Social Science and Asian Studies and across the campus, who have provided such a warm and generous welcome to Melanie and me. I am very appreciative of the fruitful and intellectually-stimulating environment I have found here and the associations I have had with both staff and students. We look forward to many opportunities to return to Hong Kong and the HSMC campus and welcome colleagues here to come visit us at the University of Puget Sound!

HSMC Teaching Development Grant 2017/18 Title: Manga as a learning tool for Japanese language/culture and business etiquette. (Dr Christopher Au Yeung, Dr Victor Chan & Mr Chan Chau) This project intends to use manga (Japanese comic) as an instruction medium to enhance the learning experience of the students. Under the guidance of teachers and a manga artist, students will study materials related to the Japanese language/culture and business etiquette and deliver the content in graphic form. It is believed that such “draw-to-learn” process will increase students’ understanding of the content. The manga booklet will be made available to all in the College and will be useful for students studying Japanese language/culture and those who are anticipating internships in Japanese organisations or exchange programmes in Japan. To promote the educational value of manga in HSMC, a DIY guide will also be incorporated into the booklet containing hints and tips on the essential skills in drawing teaching materials.

Asian Studies Visiting Scholar Public Lecture Series by Prof Karl Fields, Semester 2, 2017-18 Monuments and Mandates: The Fickle Fate of National Memorials in Greater China (1 March 2018) In the name of “transitional justice,” Taiwan's governing Democratic Progressive Party passed legislation last December to remove the name and likeness of former KMT strongman Chiang Kai-shek from the memorials, roads and schools of Taiwan. Thus, Chiang becomes the latest character in a political drama playing out in Greater China involving multiple figures and spanning many centuries. This lecture profiles four of these figures—Mazu (媽祖), Koxinga (國姓爺), Sun Yat-sen (孫逸仙) and Chiang Kai- shek (蔣介石)—and the way in which their images and legacies have been imagined, constructed and deconstructed as regimes have waxed and waned.

Miracle of Asian Development: Explaining East Asian Exceptionalism (19 April 2018) The phenomenal economic rise of East Asia has been perhaps the most significant development of the last half century, arguably more consequential for this century than the collapse of European Communism, the end of the Cold War, or the rise of Islamic extremism. More than a billion of Asia’s poor have been lifted out of poverty and the global economy’s center of gravity has decidedly shifted from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This lecture will seek to identify the common prerequisites promoting the exceptional developmental success of Japan, East Asia’s newly-industrialized economies, and China.
