Peter Vidmar Club Conference The Great British Keynote Speaker GymFusion Preview Warm-Up ...with the President MARCH 2012

ith the final national federation line-up for the Olympic Games now complete, it is interesting to see the European influence in the Games. WIn men’s artistic, 8 of the 12 teams will be European, 6 of the 12 teams in women’s artistic, 9 of the 12 in rhythmic, and 7 male and 9 female in trampoline. When adding in individual representation from this represents 64% in the men’s discipline, 58% in women’s, 83% in rhythmic and 54% in trampoline. In overall terms, there will be close on 65% representation from Europe in London.

Why do I highlight these figures? In the coming months, the UEG will be holding the European Senior and Junior Championships in the four Olympic disciplines with many of the federations using the respective European Championships as the last important benchmark to test their teams and gymnasts. In and , 39 federations will be participating in the respective WAG and MAG European Championships with the highest ever number of participants. In simple terms, is the bedrock of our sport and the most competitive.

One new rule to be applied for the first time in the championships, will be an absolute embargo on the use of mobile phones or electronic communication devices in the ‘field of play’ during competition. This will apply to gymnasts, coaches and judges with significant sanctions. So, whether you are participating, or a spectator wishing to contact a competitor during a competition, keep the electronics in your bag or pocket and resist temptation.

Also, on the European theme, the revised Code of Points for TeamGym was approved by the UEG for immediate implementation. This new Code has regard to difficulty, separate judging panels (execution and composition), the clarification of requirements and increased element specification. The changes also has regard to the consultation with national federations. I am sure that the changes will now become part of our TeamGym competition framework.

An exciting part of our ‘I am BG’ campaign has now been reached, with the distribution to clubs of starter packs. As the momentum moves towards London 2012, I am sure clubs throughout the country will seek to embrace the Games with innovations to reflect what will be an important two weeks in . I am sure we will welcome seeing how you mark this special period - send us details and photos of your club dressed in the ‘I am BG’ branding.

On the horizon, we also have the National Club Conference and Awards Evening. This year Peter Vidmar will be the keynote speaker, so book your place now.

To all of our european teams, ‘Good Luck’ as you seek, once again, to bring home medals and keep an eye on our junior teams. It is interesting to Paul Garber look back and see how many of our juniors have President, British Gymnastics progressed and maybe will be part of our Team GB selection for London. We had other rooms that we used to help pay the rent, including a studio upstairs that we converted into a boxing studio, another which held martial arts and also weightlifting, but the fact that the gym was on three floors made developing the club any further very difficult. 8 9 The Europa Centre Check out the video...
