.••.^•&&z Brampton Lacrosse History In the early 1820s, John Elliott and William Lawson immigrated to this area from Brampton, Cumberland, England, and in 1834 they named the settlement Brampton. In 1853 Brampton was incorporated as a village, 20 years later was incorporated as a town, and in 1974 we became a city. Brampton has a long , dating back to 1871 when Mr. George Lee (a teacher at Brampton High School), introduced lacrosse in this town and proposed the name "EXCELSIOR", which he took from Longfellow's poem of the same name; meaning 'more lofty, still higher, ever upward'. This is the name our Brampton representative teams, at all levels, continue to use 144 years later. In 1883 the Brampton Excelsiors Lacrosse Club was officially formed. In 1950 Memorial Arena was erected and was dedicated to the citizens of the community as a memorial to those who made the 'ultimate sacrifice'. The legacy of the Brampton Excelsiors must include a salute to this distinctive building...MEMORIAL ARENA IS A COMMUNITY ICON WHERE GREAT MEMORIES ARE MADE!!! The Brampton Excelsiors is the longest running community owned sports franchise in Canada. A 144 year tradition of lacrosse that has a firm heritage in the City we love and call home—Brampton. We are proud to be the Excelsiors....and even prouder to be the Brampton Excelsiors!

"A lot of people take time to volunteer over their life, but not many can say they've been doing it for 50 years. But Herb Phillips can!

That's right, for the past 50 years Phillips has been a fixture around local lacrosse arenas, doing whatever was needed to make the Excelsiors' organization a success everything from coach to PHILIPS managing, to handling the 30-second clock, he's done it all.

From 1970 to present, Phillips has manned the 30-second clock for the May 2013 - Herb Phillips, who has volunteered for 50 years B, with the Brampton Excelsiors receives a signed jersey from Brampton Junior Junior A and Majors teams— a total of 1,500 BELC President, Ziggy Musial games worked as a minor official, which equates to more than 4,500 hours. Since 1978 Phillips has also put in countless hours helping to run weekly bingo fundraisers for the Majors, and now for the Jr A Excelsiors. That equates to 562 work days or 1.5 years."

Slide 2: (Excelsiors) As you can see lacrosse covers the Brampton map using Memorial, Vic Park, Jim Archdekin, Century Gardens, and Creditview Fields on a regularbasis from late springthrough the fall.

In2000the BELC and the BMLA formed the Brampton Lacrosse Allianceto foster and promote lacrosse within our community to ensure the future of Lacrossein Brampton.

Slide 3: (Who is the BELC?) Excerpts from The Brampton ExcelsiorLacrosseClubConstitution ensure that we compete at the highest level, be recognized as sportsmen while representing Brampton, partner with the BMLA to engage youth to participate, support & follow our governing bodies' initiatives and rules, honour the history and manage the affairs with integrity.

The BELC and the BMLA are both registered Not for Profit community based lacrosse organizations.

A fun fact which many of you may not know is that the Brampton Excelsiors is the longest running community owned sports franchise in Canada.

Slide 4: (BMLA Executive) The Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association provides lacrosse for all children (boys and girls) from the ages of 3 to 21, encompassing programs for both recreational (house league) and competitive (rep) play in both box and field lacrosse.

Last year they had approximately 500 registrants for box lacrosse, 250 registrants in Field lacrosse (spring and fall) and 125 registrants for Girls Field.

Slide 5: (BELC Executive) Brampton Excelsiors Lacrosse Club - Majors, Jr A, Jr B, Masters, Jr & Men's Field, & Jr & Sr Women's Field

The BELC provides lacrosse for individuals from the age of 17 to retirement, encompassing programs for both recreational and competitive play.

Slide 6: (Brampton Lacrosse History) Early1820s, John Elliott and William Lawson immigrated to this area from Brampton, Cumberland, England, and in 1834 they named the settlement Brampton. In 1853 Brampton was incorporated as a village, 20 years later was incorporated as a town, and in 1974 we became a city.

Brampton Excelsiors Lacrosse Club slide notes Page 1 of 4 Slide 7: (Lacrosse Past and Future) Brampton has a long history of lacrosse, dating back to 1871 when a teacher at Brampton High School, Mr. George Lee, introduced lacrosse in this town and proposed the name "EXCELSIOR", which he took from Longfellow's poem ofthe same name; meaning 'more lofty, still higher, ever upward'.

Excelsiorsis still the name our Brampton representative teams, at all levels, continue to use.

In 1883 the Brampton Excelsiors Lacrosse Club (BELC) was officially formed.

In 1950 Memorial Arena was erected and was dedicated to the citizens of our community as a memorial to those who made the 'ultimate sacrifice'. The legacy ofthe Brampton Excelsiors must include a salute to this distinctive building...MEMORIALARENA IS A COMMUNITYICON WHERE GREATMEMORIES ARE MADE!!!

Our past and present sponsors, executive, bench personnel, players and fan supporters have been an important part of our success over the years.

A144 year tradition of lacrosse that has a firm heritage in the City we love and call home—Brampton.

We are proud to be both Excelsiors and Bramptonians

Slide 8: (Annual BELC Awards) We also proudly recognize our past heroes (players & builders) by naming awards in their honour, which are presented annually at our year end banquet.

This helps to entrench the Excelsior philosophy to all current players and builders.

Slide 9: (Lacrosse Notable Activities) Here is a quick snapshot of some ofthe latest Team Ontario lacrosse participants, Scholarship recipients, and Ontario Lacrosse Award recipients from Brampton.

We also wanted to point out that in 1999 Brampton's Councillor Doug Whillans was the recipient ofthe Ontario Lacrosse Merv McKenzie award for Development of Lacrosse in the province. The BELC Organization received this award in 2012.

That year two other Brampton Lacrosse icons. Dean McLeod and Brent McCauley received a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal.

We also wanted to point out Kyle Rubish who works for the City of Brampton. He played for the Brampton Minor, JrA's and Majors - he currently plays for the Edmonton Rush is considered one ofthe top defenders in the National Lacrosse League. Kyle is also a World Champion in Field Lacrosse.

Slide 10: (Brampton Lacrosse Volunteers) This table shows the number ofvolunteers that we have working throughout a season to run the BELC

A small honourarium is paid annually to the Head AthleticTherapist on the Major, Jr A and Jr Bteams only, to ensure the safety ofour players.

We have partnered with the Athletic Therapist Program at Sheridan College in Brampton, from which we have hired AthleticTherapists and recruited Athletic volunteers. Havingthis partnership also allows the Brampton players free use ofthe therapy facilities at Sheridan College. Our past AT volunteers have since found permanent positions with in other communities.

The numbers above do not include any provided by Masters, JRA, JR B or those ofthe JR& SR Women's Field teams who provide countless hours coaching and developing within the BMLA.

I'd like to respectfully point out to everyone how impressed "we were" when putting together this presentation and calculating the number ofvolunteers and the amount of hours they provide each year. Over 80 volunteers Brampton Excelsiors Lacrosse Club slide notes Page 2 of 4 who dedicatearound6,000hourseachyear(some more- some less) but every one of them a huge asset to the BELC, and without their participation we would not be able to function.

Slide 11: (Volunteer Recognition) In speaking about volunteerswe hadto pointout the dedication of one of our Excelsior heroes who passedaway in the summer of 2013.

Herbie Phillips volunteered inthe Brampton lacrosse community for50 years, and we wouldliketo formally thank Council for honouring him by naming the new press box currently being installed at Memorial Arena in his name.

Slide 12: (Lacrosse Operating Budgets) The Operating Budgets for the Majors,JrA's and JrB'sare quite largebut are in line with those ofother clubs in their respective leagues.

Slide 13: (Brampton Lacrosse Sponsors) This isa quicklisting of some of the BELC sponsors from the Majors, Jr A's and Jr B'sover the lastthree yearsthat our volunteers have managed to secure.

As you can see there are more than 50 of them and they help out by providing approximately $7500 per team each year.

Slide 14: (Brampton Lacrosse Revenue) BELC volunteers also run a number of fundraisers throughout the year which generates revenue of between $7,000to $12,000 annuallyper team (Major, Jr A &Jr B)

Grants from the City of Brampton &the Mayors Gala have been between $40,000 and $50,000.00 per year

Bingo Revenues which are currently run by BELC volunteers are now at around $30,000 - a decline of approximately 18% just since 2011

With the exception of the Major team, Player fees of between $200 (Masters) and $500 (for Jr A) applyto allteams

Slide 15: (Lacrosse Use of Funds) Our funds are allocated each year in one of the 8 categories noted on this slide.

Ourlargestamounts go to Game Day (whichincludesfloortime), Equipment (playeruniforms, team appareland equipment), Road games (buses, meal, accommodation) and League Fees (which includesthe cost of referees)

We also allocate funds to Playerand Program Development (which includes allAthletic/Medical supplies, small honourariums, and coaching certification & development costs),

The final amounts are Awards, Promotion and Administration. We would liketo point out to council that every year since2000 partof our operating budget (approximately $5,000)is used to have a Rnancial Review done by an independent accounting firm located in Brampton.

Slide 16: (City Grant Impact) Thisslideis a quicksnapshot of the BELC Revenue including the CityGrant(which we have been receivingfor around 15 years, and the impact it would have on our organization if we were to no longer receive it).

Although the BELC Volunteers continue to amaze us each year with the amount of hours they give, the sponsorships they solicit, and the fundraisers they run, we would be hard pressed to make up the difference.

We are requesting an annual grant of $50,000 per year which would be dispersed between the BELC teams.

Slide 17: (Economic Impact) The Economic Impact to Brampton with the involvement of lacrosse involves many events:

Brampton Excelsiors LacrosseClub slide notes > Page3 of4 For the past 22 years, 60 teams from allover Ontariocome to participate in the John 'Gus' McCauley Minor Box Representative Tournament. This is a premier A level tournament that last 3 days.

Forthe past 5 years the Ontario Lacrosse Minor Field Lacrosse 'Face Off Provincials have hosted 150 teams over 3 days at the Creditview fields

In both 2012 and 2013 the Jr B team ran the Ontario Masters Box Lacrosse Provincials as a fundraiser, which hosted 20 teams over 3 days

Girls Field Tournaments and Provincialshave used the Brampton fields on various weekends over the last 5 years, including hosting International teams like England

In 2009, in conjuction with the Jr A Minto Cup Brampton hosted the Midget Box Lacrosse Nationals which saw 10 provincial teams over the course of a week enjoy our facilities and hospitality

Brampton has also hosted what is referred to as the "Qualifiers" and the "Final 6" which would be 18 to 36 teams over 3 days

Boy's and Men's Field hosting weekends have been many

Minto Cup (Brampton has been in the Jr A Canadian Lacrosse Championship game 9 times and we have claimed the title 4 times - Brampton hosted in 1957 & 1959 and again in 2009

The Mann Cup is the Major Canadian Box Lacrosse Championship; Brampton has been in the game 22 times starting in 1914, and winning it 11 times - Brampton has hosted a number of times

Future Hosting Opportunities for Brampton, which we have already spoken to the Major about, and we would be willing to assist in securing is the Ontario Lacrosse Association Box Lacrosse Minor Provincials which showcases 480 teams over the course of 10 days in August annually- Brampton has the facilities and the accommodations to host such an event.

Slide 18: (Excelsior Homage) This image is ofour Homage Banner, which hangs in Memorial Arena and here are inscribed the names of 263 Excelsior Heroes.

It is decorated with the names of 263 Excelsiors.

We celebrate 138 Brampton Excelsior Life Members, the 57 individuals and 2 teams who are Brampton Sports Hall of Fame Inductees, 27 Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame Inductees and the 41 individuals and 1 team who are Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame Inductees

We would like to quote from Zigg/s 2012 BSHOF induction speech, when speaking of some of his coaching mentors as we felt it also applies for many ofthe people honoured on this homage banner The lessons I learned from these individuals shaped my values about sincerity, commitment, passion for the game of lacrosse and life in general."

The heritage and tradition of lacrosse has firm roots in Brampton.

Our past and present sponsors, executive, volunteers, bench personnel, players and fen supporters have been an important part of our success over the past 144 years -we ask for continued support from the Qty of Brampton as we carry on this tradition.

We are proud to be the Excelsiors....and even prouder to be the Brampton Excelsiors! and we thank you for the opportunity to present to you tonight.

We hope to see you all this summer in the rinks or on the fields.
