14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

EVANGELIZATION CORNER SAY SO With all the miseries our country and the world are facing these days, it could be easy to lose our spiritual balance. Yet amidst all these miseries, heroes flood our communities, summer flowers blossom, birds sing their arias all the day long. God’s creation shows His glory through it all. As evangelizers, we should join in the show. As today’s psalm says: Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. --Psalm 145:10-11

So this week, when someone asks you how you are doing, use it as an opportunity to say, “Thanks be to God, I am counting my blessings.”

THE FEAST OF SAINT BENEDICT OF NURSIA is celebrated on July 11. Born to upper-class parents in modern-day Italy during the year 480, Benedict was sent to Rome to study the humanities. He soon became disgusted with the loose morals that prevailed among the students. Withdrawing from the city, he lived briefly with a group of monks, then as a hermit. The young man spent three years in solitude, facing and overcoming severe temptations through prayer and asceticism. Only after doing so, did he have the confidence to emerge as an organizer of monastic communities. His first monasteries were established in the Anio valley outside Subiaco. Benedict's monasteries in Subiaco became centers of education for children. It was most likely at Monte Cassino that the abbot drew up a rule of life, the famous “Rule of St. Benedict,” which emphasized prayer, work, simplicity, and hospitality. Benedict's life was marked by various intrigues and miraculous incidents, which are described in his biography written by Pope St. Gregory the Great. One of the most remarkable was his meeting in 543 with Totila, King of the Goths, in which the abbot rebuked the king's lifestyle and prophesied his death. St. Scholastica, Benedict's sister, also embraced religious life as a nun. In his final years, the abbot himself had a profound mystical experience, which is said to have involved a supernatural vision of God and the whole of creation. Around the age of 63, Benedict suffered his final illness. He was carried into the church by his fellow monks, where he received the Eucharist for the last time. Held up by his disciples, he raised his hands in prayer for the last time, before dying in their arms. View this bulletin online at www.DiscoverMass.com

CHURCH OF ST. GREGORY THE GREAT VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA JULY 5, 2020 FR. CHARLES BREINDEL HOMILY ¤ FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - A

Some people, maybe most people, misunderstand the invitation of Jesus that is found in this gospel. Because of this misunderstanding they miss some wonderful opportunities to experience the compassionate love and mercy of Jesus. At the end of this gospel Jesus offers this wonderful invitation, "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). That beautiful invitation of Jesus is intended for all of us because all of us who are struggling to follow Jesus are people who labor and are burdened. For being faithful followers of Jesus and his teachings creates work and that work can at times be burdensome for everyone. In a nutshell then, Jesus is offering rest in his loving arms to all of us any time we need to feel his presence.

But a problem arises in some people’s understanding of this gospel invitation of Jesus. Some people seem to think that

they are not being invited to find rest in Jesus except when they are in great difficulty. Some people interpret Jesus’ words as implying that Jesus is only inviting them when they are experiencing acute problems. It is because some people think that they should turn to Jesus only in those worst moments of life, such as serious illness, personal crises, or times of loss and death. It is certainly true that these are times of great burden, and so are times to turn to Jesus for aid and comfort. But they are not the only times when Jesus’ invitation is there. As a priest I see this misunderstanding of Jesus’ words all too often. There are many people who go through life with only occasionally turning to feel the mercy and love of Jesus. For most of their lives, they ignore Jesus, moving forward in relative comfort and with minimal attention to their baptismal faith and promises to walk with Jesus. Life does not seem too difficult at those times, and so they credit their successes or peace of mind to their own accomplishments and talents. They forget that all they have and are comes from Jesus and that, in turn, they owe respect, thanksgiving and obedience to Jesus. It is only when they are hurting or experiencing difficulties that they turn to Jesus. It is when they want to believe that their bad situations are not their own doing that they seek rest in Jesus. It is odd, is it not? When things are going well in our lives, we attribute our happiness and peace to ourselves. So we find rest in ourselves. But when things are not going well, we attribute the problems to others, to nature, to God, or happenstance, but not to ourselves. And consequently, in difficult times, we find that we need Jesus to take care of us. It is well and good that we are able to turn to Jesus in difficult times and find the rest his gospel invitation offers. It would be even better if we could turn to Jesus in good times too, and find the rest that his invitation offers us who can recognize him as the source of our peaceful and happy times. If we return to our gospel for today, we discover a wonderful insight. This invitation of Jesus to come to him and find peace has a preface that precedes the invitation. Right before this wonderful invitation Jesus says, "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones” (Matthew 11:25). Here Jesus is showing us how to turn to him at all times. Jesus turns to his Father in heaven to give praise, first of all. Jesus then acknowledges that all things have been revealed from the Father. So Jesus is expressing gratitude as well to the Father in heaven. In essence, Jesus is teaching us how to come to the Father and find the rest he promises. We come with praise and with gratitude. And we do that at all times, good and bad, happy and sad. Finally, Jesus acknowledges in his opening prayer of this gospel that it is to “little ones” that understanding of God is revealed. This is a reminder that, if we are like little children, we will come to know the will of God in Jesus. Little children are completely dependent on their parents, and they turn to their parents in all their needs and at all times. Because they can do nothing without their parents. And so it is with all of us who are “little ones” of the Father in heaven. We recognize with both praise and gratitude our complete dependence on God. At all times, not just in difficult times, we turn to God. As faithful followers of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, we labor and are burdened as loving Christians, accepting the difficulties of obedience to Jesus’ teachings and so we rejoice in hearing the invitation of this gospel. And, in our joy, we turn to Jesus in daily prayer, in regular participation at Mass and Eucharist, and in the day-to-day striving to be Christlike for others. "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28).
