6 HEAD COACH LAURA BRAND SIAS

Rutgers head coach Laura Brand Sias completed her 15th year at the helm of the program in 2017. The longtime leader guided the Scarlet Knights into a new era of Rutgers lacrosse when they historically joined the Big Ten Conference on July 1, 2014. With more than 100 career victories “On the Banks,” Brand Sias remains committed and determined to building a program that competes among the nation’s elite.

Brand Sias emphasizes the importance of developing her players on the field equally as much as producing quality character away from the game. Once a star for Rutgers women’s lacrosse in her own right, the former Scarlet Knight has her current squad continuing to make strides on the field and in the classroom.

Through 15 seasons as head coach, Brand Sias has mentored 37 all-region selections, as well as 38 all-conference honorees (five All-Big Ten, 33 All-BIG EAST).

Academically, the Scarlet Knights continued their storied success in the classroom. Rutgers received IWLCA Academic Squad honors for the 2017 season – the program’s 11th year in a row receiving the distinction since 2007.

This past spring, the NCAA recognized the program for its continued achievement of academic excellence. Rutgers has earned an Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Award in each of the last five seasons dating back to the 2011-12 academic year.

Rutgers women’s lacrosse finished 8-8 in 2017, the most wins for the program since 2014. RU also picked up two league wins for the second consecutive year, as the program competed against six schools who qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2017. Two Scarlet Knights – Kristina Dunphey and Amanda Turturro – collect- ed their 100th-career points, while Dunphey and Amanda Casten were name All-Big Ten for the second consecutive season.

Brand-Sias came to Rutgers following one season as head coach at Fairfield University (2002), where she led the Stags to a 10-7 overall record. Fairfield advanced to the 2002 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament championship match, finishing the season with a perfect 6-0 record in league play. In only one season with the Stags, Brand-Sias’s high-powered offense was ranked seventh nationally with a 12.82 goals-per-game average. Defensively, Fairfield finished first in the MAAC and 11th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing opponents to score an average of just 8.59 goals per game.

As a player, Brand-Sias starred as a four-year letterwinner at midfield for Rutgers (1996-99), helping to lead the Scarlet Knights to their first-ever national ranking and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999. Following her graduation, Brand-Sias remained with the program, serving as an assistant coach, where her responsibilities included working with the offense, recruiting, on-field instruction and administrative duties.Brand-Sias continued to excel following her collegiate days as a member of the Canadian National Lacrosse Team from 1999-2004. She was a starter for the 2001 Canadian World Cup squad that placed fourth, losing to England in the bronze-medal game.

Her athletic career began at Radnor (Pa.) High School, where she played three years of lacrosse and . With the lacrosse team, Brand-Sias was named the squad’s Outstanding Athlete of the Year as a sophomore, junior and senior, in addition to serving as the team captain in 1995. Also a standout field hockey player, Brand-Sias was named captain her senior year and was recognized as a Senior All-Star. She was named to the all-league and all-county second teams.

She also founded Brand Elite, L.L.C., where she serves as the President and CEO, running various lacrosse camps and clinics throughout the summer. Brand-Sias received a dual bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology from Rutgers University in 1999. She and her husband Jim Sias reside in Somerset, N.J. The two are proud parents of their daughter Kinley, born September of 2013, and their son Tobin, born December 2015.
