Nauticus, the innovative science and technology center and home to the battleship Wisconsin and the Naval Museum, is the principal host of this year’s Maritime Heritage Conference.

Organized by the National Maritime Alliance, the Maritime Heritage Conference is supported by multiple organizations and institutions associated with maritime heritage and covers a wide range of topics. Museums, universities, government agencies and non-profit historical and heritage societies large and small send their leaders and staff to share with and learn from one another. Networking opportunities abound. The last time the conference was held in Norfolk, more than 500 people attended!

Organizers anticipate over 140 papers will be presented in sessions that will cover a wide range of maritime topics, including:

Keynote speakers this year include Daniel J. Basta, director of NOAA, Office of National Marine Sanctuaries; Dr. Ray Ashley, president and CEO of the Maritime Museum of San Diego; and Admiral Robert J. Papp, Jr., who retires this year from his post as commandant of the US Coast Guard. The keynote speaker for the Saturday evening National Maritime Alliance Banquet is noted adventure novelist, marine archaeologist and winner of the inaugural Maritime Heritage Award of Distinction Clive Cussler, whose novels have reached the New York Times best-seller list over twenty times. Cussler is also the founder and chairman of the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA), which has discovered more than sixty shipwreck sites.

Receptions will be held aboard the Wisconsin and at the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, as well as a closing National Maritime Alliance banquet featuring a surprise keynote speaker. Opportunities to tour the Norfolk area abound, including the Norfolk Naval Base, Norfolk , Norfolk Yacht Club, Newport News Shipbuilding Ltd. and Colonial Williamsburg.

This conference will be a great opportunity to meet the leadership and fellow members of the National Maritime Historical Society and the maritime history community. Be where the action is!
