The version of The Quiet Americanin contrast to the earlier film versiondepicted Greene's original ending and treatment of the principal American character, Pyle. Like the novel, the film illustrates The Quiet American moral culpability in arranging terrorist actions aimed at the French colonial government and the Viet Minh. Going beyond Greene's original work, the film used a montage ending with superimposed images of American soldiers from the intervening decades of the War. On one level, The Quiet American is The Quiet American love story about the triangle that develops between Thomas Fowler, a British journalist in his fifties; a young American idealist, supposedly an aid worker, named Alden Pyle; and Phuong, a Vietnamese woman. On another level it is also about the growing American involvement that led to the full-scale American war in Vietnam. Thomas Fowler Michael Cainewho The Quiet American the story, is involved in the war only as a reporter, an unengaged observer, apart from one crucial event. The Quiet American bombings, dishonestly blamed on the Communists in order to further American outrage, kill a number of innocent people, including women and children. When Fowler finds out about Pyle's involvement in the bombings, he takes one definitive action to seal all of The Quiet American fates. The first rough cut was screened to a test audience on September 10, and received positive ratings. However, the event took place the next day, and audience ratings dropped with each subsequent screening. Reacting to criticism of the film's "unpatriotic" message, Miramax shelved the film for a year. Narrated in The Quiet American first person by journalist Thomas Fowler, the novel depicts the breakdown of French colonialism in Vietnam and early American involvement in the Vietnam War. The novel has received much attention due to The Quiet American prediction of the outcome of the Vietnam War The Quiet American subsequent American foreign policy since the s. Greene portrays Pyle as so blinded by American exceptionalism that he cannot see the The Quiet American he brings upon the Vietnamese. He was The Quiet American by an American aid worker who lectured him about finding a "third force in Vietnam ". Thomas Fowler is a British journalist in his fifties who has covered the French war in Vietnam for more The Quiet American two years. Pyle lives his life and forms his opinions based on foreign policy books written by York Harding with no real experience in Southeast Asia matters. Harding's theory is that neither communism nor colonialism are proper in foreign lands like Vietnambut rather a "Third Force"—usually a combination of traditions—works best. When they first meet, the earnest Pyle asks Fowler to help him understand more about the country, but the older man's cynical realism does not sink in. Pyle is certain that American power can put the Third Force in charge, but he knows little about The Quiet American and is recasting it into theoretical categories. Her sister's intent is to arrange a marriage for Phuong that will benefit herself and her family. The Quiet American sister disapproves of their relationship, as Fowler is already married and an atheist. So, at a dinner with Fowler and Phuong, Pyle meets her sister, who immediately starts questioning Pyle about his viability for marriage with Phuong. Towards the end of the dinner, Pyle dances with Phuong, and Fowler notes how poorly the upstart dances. Fowler goes to Phat Diem to witness a battle there. Pyle travels there to tell him that he has been The Quiet American love with Phuong since The Quiet American first night he saw her, and that he wants to marry her. They make a toast to nothing and Pyle leaves the next The Quiet American. Fowler gets a letter from Pyle thanking him for being so nice. The letter annoys Fowler because of Pyle's arrogant confidence that Phuong will leave Fowler to marry him. Meanwhile, Fowler's editor wants him to transfer back to England. Pyle comes to Fowler's residence and they ask Phuong to choose between them. She chooses Fowler, unaware that he is The Quiet American a transfer. Fowler The Quiet American to his wife The Quiet American ask for a divorce in front of Phuong. Fowler and Pyle meet again in a war zone. They end up in a guard tower where they discuss The Quiet American ranging from sexual experiences to religion. Their presence endangers the local guards by attracting an attack by the Viet Minh. These indigenous auxiliaries simply want to live their lives, but they are doomed by their contact with foreign intrigue. Pyle saves Fowler's life as they escape. Fowler goes back to Saigonwhere he lies to Phuong that his wife will divorce him. Pyle exposes the lie and Phuong must choose between him and Fowler. Like a small country caught between imperial rivals, Phuong considers her own interests realistically and without sentiment. She moves in with Pyle. After receiving a letter from Fowler, his editor decides that he can stay in Indo-China for another year. Fowler goes into the midst of the battlefield to witness events. When Fowler returns to Saigon, he goes to Pyle's office to confront him, but Pyle is out. Pyle comes over later for drinks and they talk about his pending marriage to Phuong. Later that week, a car bomb is detonated and many innocent civilians are killed. Pyle thus brings disaster upon innocents, all the while certain he is bringing a third way to Vietnam. Fowler is emotionally conflicted about this discovery, but ultimately decides to aid in the assassination of Pyle. Though the police suspect that Fowler is involved, they cannot prove anything. Phuong goes back to Fowler as if nothing had ever happened. In the last chapter, Fowler receives a telegram from his wife in which she states that she has changed her mind and will begin divorce proceedings. The novel ends with Fowler thinking about his first meeting with, and the death of, Pyle. Thomas Fowler is a British journalist in his fifties who has been covering the French war in Vietnam for more than two years. He has become a very jaded and cynical man. Throughout the book Fowler is often caught in lies and sometimes there may be speculation that he is lying to himself. The Quiet American relationship with Vietnamese woman Phuong The Quiet American intensifies the conflict of the story, especially between Fowler and Pyle. Alden Pyle is the "quiet American" of the title. A CIA agent working undercover, Pyle is thoughtful, soft-spoken, intellectual, serious, and idealistic. He comes from a privileged East Coast background. His father is a renowned professor of underwater erosion whose picture has appeared on the cover of Time magazine; his mother is well respected in their community. Pyle is a brilliant graduate of Harvard University. He has studied theories of government and society, and is particularly devoted to a scholar named York Harding. Harding's theory is that neither Communism nor colonialism is the answer in foreign lands like Vietnam, but rather a "Third Force", usually a combination of traditions, works best. Pyle has read Harding's numerous books many times and has adopted Harding's thinking as his own. Pyle also strives to be The Quiet American member of this "Third Force". US military counter-insurgency expert Edward Lansdalewho was stationed in Vietnam —, is sometimes cited as a model for Pyle's character. In fact Greene did not meet Lansdale until after completing much of the novel. PhuongFowler's lover at the beginning of the novel, is a beautiful young Vietnamese woman who stays with him for security and protection, and leaves him for the same reason. She is considered by Fowler as a lover to be taken for granted and by Pyle as someone to be protected. Pyle's desire for Phuong was largely interpreted by critics to parallel his desire for The Quiet American non-communist South Vietnam. Her character is never fully developed or revealed. The Quiet American is never able to show her emotions, as her older sister makes decisions for her. She is named after, but not based on, a Vietnamese friend of Greene's. He is a man anguished between doing his duty pursuing Pyle's death and questioning Fowler and doing what is best for the country letting the matter be unsolved. He and Fowler are oddly akin in some ways, both faintly cynical and weary of the world; hence their discussion of Blaise Pascal. But they are divided by the differences of their faith: Vigot is a Roman Catholic and Fowler The Quiet American atheist. The novel was popular in England and over the years has achieved notable The Quiet American, being adapted into films in and most recently in by Miramax, featuring Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser The Quiet American earning the former a Best Actor nomination. However, after its publication in the United States inthe novel was widely condemned as anti-American. It was criticised by The New Yorker for portraying Americans as murderers, largely based on one scene in which a bomb explodes in a crowd of people. According to critic Philip Stratford, "American readers were incensed, perhaps not so much because of the biased portrait of obtuse and destructive American innocence and idealism in Alden Pyle, but because in this case it was drawn with The Quiet American acid pleasure by a middle-class English snob like The Quiet American Fowler whom they were all too ready to identify with Greene himself". The novel has been filmed twice. The original Hollywood film inverted the theme The Quiet American the novel, turning it into an anti-communist tale instead of a The Quiet American story about American interventionism. The film version was true to the book. However, the event took place the next day, and audience ratings declined with each subsequent screening. Reacting to criticism of its "unpatriotic" message, Miramax shelved the film for a year. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Novel by Graham Greene. This article is about the . Title: The Quiet American British Thomas Fowler The Quiet American his life in Saigon working as a reporter for the London Times, covering the war in Vietnam between the colonial French powers and the Communists, who seem to be winning the war. In the later stages of his career, he takes his job lightly now, filing stories only on occasion, and no longer doing field work. But most importantly, this posting allows him to escape from what he considers a dreary life in London, including an unsatisfying marriage to a Catholic woman, The Quiet American will never grant him a divorce, which in turn allows him to have an affair with a young Vietnamese ex-taxi dancer named Phuong, whom he loves and would marry if he were able. Phuong's sister doesn't much like Fowler, if only because he cannot provide a stable future for her. His idyllic life is threatened when the head office suggests he go back to London. In this way, he decides to write a major story to prove to his superiors that he should stay in Saigon. InFowler is called into the Written by Huggo. English journalist Thomas Fowler lives a quiet life with his young mistress, Phuong and no intention to return to London. When the Times request he return he starts looking for stories to ensure he can stay. At the same time an idealistic The Quiet American American arrives as part of a medical aid programme in The Quiet American middle of the war between The Quiet American French and the Communist forces in the North fighting for independence. The American, Pyle falls for Phuong and the two men discuss what can be done. However in any conflict The Quiet American is impossible to The Quiet American neutral for long. As the film rather bluntly says, the plot here is the same The Quiet American told twice. The two plots work well even if they have flaws. The tale of the two lovers is less well handed than the critical political stuff but is still good and slightly moving. I assume that this is what Noyce wanted and he does it well. The alignment with The Quiet American central love is not that well done, and this is shown by the fact that Pyle is given those lines to speak so clearly in case anyone missed it. However it didn't take too much away from the film as a total and I still enjoyed it very much. One of The Quiet American main reasons was the direction. I have recently seen Noyce's Rabbit Proof Fence and he worked well there. Again here he directs well with the bigger landscape shots but also does well with more intimate or action shots. He also brings The Quiet American excellent performance out of Caine. He should really get an Oscar for this but I suspect he won't as he got one a few years ago. Fraser is also very good even if his character has to be damaged by having him explain things. Hai Yen is not as good. Overall this film may get bad reviews in the US due to it's clear criticism of past American policy but it doesn't deserve it. The love story element of it may have it's flaws but the film works pretty well overall and the political drama side is strong enough to hold it together. The Quiet American main problem for me was actually believing that an American could ever exist that is as polite and well spoken as Fraser portrays Pyle to be!
