Sept 17-19 October 'di•chot•o•my' An exhibition of images by Michael Jacobs

“I am delighted to be exhibiting the photographs of Michael Jacobs. This solo exhibition is his first outside of Israel and includes over 30 new works, which explore the breadth of Jacobs’ practice and often his relationship with Scottish landscape, its poetic juxtapositions equally evocative and engaging.

Over the last two decades, Jacobs has interrogated the language and practice of photography. Jacobs incorporates a form of abstracted observation that questions the more process-oriented approaches, bringing a very personal sensibility to the work, that includes an acute observation to movement and content in nature. The excitement for me is in the pure invention of this gestural photography. The images often so close to drawing, that they force you to scrutinise the surface in a search for marks, a characteristic achieved through Jacob’s hypersensitivity to the effects of light and dark-described by Henry Moore as the modelling of life itself.

This is a very unique man and machine relationship." Isabel H Langtry, Principal HSoA

30 October - 30 November Steven Snoddy Exhibition

"I am delighted with this exhibition by Steven Snoddy, his seductive colour palette and carefully considered compositions draw from the light a sense of balance. The organisation of perspectival space flattened into planes over the pictoral surface act like captured spaces creating an overall aesthetic awash in colours. The pastels-rarely exhibited, and monotypes explore a range of flat and deep spaces, stretching the possibilities of this powerful aesthetic into mediums which can inspire us all.

In Richard Cork’s words “Snoddy’s art is fundamentally abstract, it includes a fascinating range of references to the visible world. Architecture can be counted among them, partly because he sees himself building the internal scaffolding of his paintings as the work proceeds”.

The work is delightful, energising. Snoddy creates original painterly pathways in all his chosen mediums."

30 September - 8 October ‘Mixed Realities’ Alistair McKinnon “I am delighted to be exhibiting the artworks of Alistair Mackinnon. The methods used in his work encompass photo editing software, 3D modeling and animation, and photographs as well as oil pastel and acrylic paints. He often captures the images of landscapes using a camera then abstracts it digitally, sometimes converting it back into a physical piece using paints. With technology exponentially growing and becoming more seamlessly integrated with society, Mixed Realities is a visual metaphor for these changes and how humanity may fit into them. It also concerns the overexpansion of organisations to a size the individual can no longer comprehend. As a result, through the sum of their parts these groups can oppress and exploit, and the victims can perceive a mixture of realities conveyed by the digital media as well as reality. Some of McKinnon’s artworks consider an eldritch entity formed from bureaucracy and government. A mass that is greater than the sum of its parts. The individuals that serve it do not know of its existence and it keeps it that way. The greedy, the racists, the sexists, the homophobes, the abusers are all separate, and their individual action fuels the existence of such an eldritch being. McKinnon is philosopher, artist, a man of all seasons, this is fascinating work.” Isabel H Langtry, Principal HSoA
