ENSEMBLE INFORMATION

A Concert Band is a balanced ensemble, consisting of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion instruments, as follows: Piccolo*, Flute, Clarinet, Clarinet*, *, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone*, Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn*, *, *, *, Percussion (Snare Drum, , suspended cymbal, Timpani*, Glockenspiel, Xylophone and other instruments required by the given work). The option of a keyboard bass (using a string bass tone setting) for any level where a tuba or string bass is not available would be an advantage. * Optional for younger groups.

PERFORMANCE TIMES NOW INCLUDE SETTING UP AND ‘Tuning Notes’ PLAYED BEFORE PERFORMANCE BEGINS.

Novice / Mixed Ensemble - Section 1 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA • Open to any Concert Band that has not performed in any Concert Band festival or competition. • The band must aspire to provide an appropriate balance of instruments and have a minimum membership of fifteen (15) including percussion. • Performance time not to exceed eight (8) minutes. • Each band must play at least two (2) contrasting, published pieces of music. Ensembles may play as many works as time permits. • Each ensemble must perform at least one selection from the Junior Concert Band test piece list. Please note that instrument substitution is encouraged in this section in order to achieve a balanced sound. i.e. Bassoon or may be played by Trombone, French Horn parts may be played by Alto Sax, Tuba by Electric Bass or Keyboard set to an appropriate sound. Percussion parts can be spilt between Drum Kit and/or Aux Percussion.  Please see: Regulations/Registration Criteria regarding the use of adults (music tutors/teachers/parents) in ensembles. • All bands are eligible for a Gold, Silver, Bronze or Merit award. An overall benchmark ensemble will be recognised.

Junior Concert Band - Section 2 The Junior Concert Band should consist of students who have been learning their instrument for only a couple of years. It is not restricted to Primary School aged students. A Primary School Band may elect to enter the Novice Band section if they are particularly inexperienced and/or their instrumentation is not complete. A balanced Primary School Band is encouraged to enter the Junior Concert Band Division. Ensembles with a proven history of success at a particularly high level or students who have been learning for 4 or more years are not eligible to enter this section and are encouraged to attempt the next section applicable to them.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA • The band must have an appropriate balance of instruments and have a minimum membership of fifteen (15) including Percussion. It is expected that students will be in Primary School in order to participate in this section. Special consideration may be given to Area Schools upon application. • Performance time not to exceed eight (8) minutes. • Play at least two (2) contrasting, published pieces of music. An overall benchmark ensemble will be recognised.

Intermediate Concert Band - Section 3 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA • The band must have an appropriate balance of instruments and have a minimum membership of twenty (20) including Percussion. The term “Intermediate” refers to the overall standard of the band and not to bands mainly comprised of younger aged students. Band members could be drawn from years 8 to 12 for this section. • Performance time not to exceed twelve (12) minutes. • Play at least two (2) contrasting, published pieces of music. Ensembles may play as many works as time permits. • Each ensemble must perform at least one selection from the Intermediate Concert Band test piece list.  Please see: Regulations/Registration Criteria regarding the use of adults (music tutors/teachers/parents) in ensembles. • All bands are eligible for a Gold, Silver, Bronze or Merit award. An overall benchmark ensemble will be recognised.

Advanced Concert Band - Section 4 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA • The band must have an appropriate balance of instruments and have a minimum membership of twenty (20) including Percussion. • Performance time not to exceed fifteen (15) minutes. • Play at least two (2) contrasting, published pieces of music. Ensembles may play as many works as time permits. • Each ensemble must perform at least one selection from the Advanced Concert Band test piece list.  Please see: Regulations/Registration Criteria regarding the use of adults (music tutors/teachers/parents) in ensembles. • All bands are eligible for a Gold, Silver, Bronze or Merit award. An overall benchmark ensemble will be recognised.

A Stage Band is a balanced group, consisting of Saxophones, Trumpets, Trombones and . The usual instrumentation is: 2x Alto Saxophones, 2x Tenor Saxophones, 1x Baritone Saxophone, 4x Trumpet, 4x Trombone, Rhythm Section: Piano, Electric/Acoustic/Double Bass, Guitar (optional), Drums, and Auxiliary Percussion, e.g. vibes (optional). (For best results, ensembles entering the ‘Advanced Stage Band’ section should closely follow the above instrumentation)

* In Stage Band Divisions: Intermediate and Advanced, there are a maximum number of performers permitted on stage. - 20 performers in total; within the following sections: - Trumpets - maximum 6 - Saxophones – maximum 7. - Rhythm Section – maximum 6 - Trombones – maximum 5.

Bands presenting with excess personnel will be adjudicated, but ineligible for any awards.

Novice/Junior Stage Band - Section 5 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA • There is no minimum number of performers (20 performers in total) – ensemble directors should strive for a balanced ensemble. • Performance time not to exceed ten (10) minutes. • Play at least two (2) contrasting, published pieces of music. • Each ensemble must perform the selection from the Novice/Junior Stage Band test piece list.  Please see: Regulations/Registration Criteria regarding the use of adults (music tutors/teachers/parents) in ensembles. • All bands are eligible for a Gold, Silver, Bronze or Merit award. An overall benchmark ensemble will be recognised.

Intermediate Stage Band - Section 6 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA • The minimum number of performers is twelve (12) including Percussion. • Performance time not to exceed twelve (12) minutes. • Play at least two (2) contrasting, published pieces of music. An overall benchmark ensemble will be recognised.

Advanced Stage Band - Section 7 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA • The minimum number of performers is ten (10) including Percussion. • Performance time not to exceed fifteen (15) minutes. • Play at least two (2) contrasting, published pieces of music. A String Ensemble is a group, consisting of Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola/Violin 3, Cello and Double Bass.

An Orchestra is a balanced group, consisting of a string section with additional woodwind, brass and percussion.

Junior String Ensemble - Section 8 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA • The minimum number of performers is: 4 for String Orchestra. • Performance time not to exceed ten (10) minutes. • Each ensemble must play at least two (2) published (in print and commercially available) movements or piece of music showing contrasting styles. • The suggested repertoire is to be used as a guide for standard of entry into this category.  Please see: Regulations/Registration Criteria regarding the use of adults (music tutors/teachers/parents) in ensembles. • All ensembles are eligible for a Gold, Silver, Bronze or Merit award. An overall benchmark ensemble will be recognised.

Orchestra / Advanced String Ensemble - Section 10 PERFORMANCE CRITERIA • The minimum number of performers is: 8 for String Orchestra and 20 for Orchestra. • Performance time not to exceed fifteen (15) minutes. • Each ensemble must play at least two (2) published (in print and commercially available) movements or piece of music showing contrasting styles. • The suggested repertoire is to be used as a guide for standard of entry into this category.  Please see: Regulations/Registration Criteria regarding the use of adults (music tutors/teachers/parents) in ensembles. • All ensembles are eligible for a Gold, Silver, Bronze or Merit award. An overall benchmark ensemble will be recognised.

A Percussion Ensemble is a group, consisting of various percussion instruments, both tuned and un-tuned.

Open Percussion Ensemble - Section 11 (a) and (b) PERFORMANCE CRITERIA  There are 2 sub-sections for this group: o 1) Tuned Percussion o 2) Drumline. Please indicate which sub-section you are selecting on the registration form.

Instruments required beyond this list are the responsibility of the participating ensemble to supply. • All ensembles are eligible for a Gold, Silver, Bronze or Merit award.
