History

Andrew Reid founded the Cambridge Chronicle and published its first edition on May 7, 1846 a few days before Cambridge was incorporated as a city. The Chronicle's early papers were printed by hand press above the Holmes Grocery Store, on the corner of Magazine and Main Streets in Central Square. It was considered the city's first local and has been the newspaper of record since it was established. The Chronicle is the city's oldest continually published weekly. In the 1930s, the Dole Family acquired the Chronicle, who soon thereafter merged it with the Cambridge Sun in 1935. acquired the paper in 1991 and then in 1996 integrated it into its subsidiary, the Community Newspaper Company. The Herald's owner, Herald Media purchased the Community Newspaper Company in 2001. Gatehouse Media acquired the Chronicle in 2006. In 2012, the Chronicle merged with ' Cambridge Tab.
