Assignment #3 –

OBJECTIVE: To develop the layout for the front page of a newsletter (8.5 by 11). This assignment will increase your understanding of design principles, , and news design, as well as your skills in InDesign. The assignment will be evaluated based on the “best practices” discussed in this class. The assignment is due at the end of class.

Your must be created in InDesign. This assignment will be done in black & white only – no color may be used, but shades of gray are acceptable.

You will turn in a print out and electronic versions of your InDesign file and PDF file. Save your files as lastname-firstname.indd and lastname-firstname.pdf. Put both of your digital files in the appropriate folder in the “classes” drive.

**********Instructions for making a .pdf file: When you are done with your design, save the InDesign file a final time. To make the .pdf, choose “Export” from the “File” menu. Choose “Adobe PDF Print” for “Save as type:” Make sure you save your .pdf file in the same folder as your InDesign file.

Your final newsletter design must contain all of the following elements: • Flag with folio line (choose your own name for your newsletter and design an appropriate flag) • You will use all placeholder text and x-frame boxes for photos • A primary news story with a photo • A story with a drop cap • All stories must have headlines and bylines • Must use at least two photos; all photos must have captions (mug shots do not have to have captions) • At least one of your photos must be given a photo credit • You must work in columns • You must begin three stories on the front page • You must include at least one jump line
