The Ise Sangu is a well-known example of the meisho-ki genre of illustrated works showing famous sights and scenes. It shows the principal sights on the well-travelled pilgrim road from Kyoto to the shrines at Ise. The black-and-white woodcut illustrations by Shitomi Kangetsu are fine and detailed with the majority being double page spreads. There are many views of scenery, buildings, temple architecture plus groups of people engaged in various tasks and celebrations and depictions of mythical entities. Stitched. £110.00 Late 19th-century, early lithographic edition of the painting album with renditions of Chinese-style model paintings by Taki Katei (1832-1901). Katei was a prominent nanga artist who studied Chinese style painting in Nagasaki and made his name in part through book publication. The original edition of this book, the production of which he personally supervised, came out in 1883. This copy, which may not be complete, can be seen as organized in sections: one with landscapes proper; another with bird and flower vignettes; one with elaborate flower arrangements; and a final section with human figures, chiefly monks. This is a somewhat later lithographic version. The date is taken from a number of the prefaces. The book has been given a modern Chinese-style stitched binding and the pages have been lined for support. The is some slight staining and wear to some pages, gener - ally not affecting the printed portion. The impression is generally good with very occasional slight blurring of some lines. This copy is lacking a cover page but has a colophon page (relating to the original edition and given in characters above) preserved by over - laid lining paper. This is the revised edition that has the benefit of all 200 illustrations being included. These illustrations are original full page colour woodblock prints done to a very fine standard and depicting characters and scenes from Japanese Noh theatre. The majority of the prints were done from paintings by Tsukioka Kogyo (1869-1927) with some 30 examples done by his fellow collaborator, Matsumo Sofu (1899- 1963). This complete compilation was published ten years after Kogyo’s death under the direction of Sofu and produced by the print - maker, Matsuki Heikichi, in his Daikokuya printworks in Tokyo.
