NOTE OF THE NIGHT The Great 8 - Alex Ovechkin recorded his franchise-leading 21st career hat trick against Detroit on Tuesday. With that hat trick, Ovechkin passed Pavel Bure and Darryl Sittler and into a tie with and Richard Martin for the 12th most in NHL history. In addition, Ovechkin passed Bure for the most career hat tricks by a Russian-born player in NHL history. It also marked his first career hat trick against Detroit, the 13th-different franchise Ovechkin has scored three goals on. Only 12 players in NHL history scored a hat trick against 13 or more different teams, with Brett Hull (20), Mario Lemieux (19) and Mike Bossy (19) holding the top three spots on that list. Last night marked Ovechkin’s 126th career multi-goal game, passing Dino Ciccarelli (125) for the 11th most in NHL history. For the third time in his career, Ovechkin became the first NHL player to reach the 25-goal mark in a season (also 2006-07 and 2013-14), doing so in Washington’s 30th game, the second-fastest he's ever reached the 25 goal mark (2013-14: 29 games to 25 goals). Since 2000-01, only one other player has been the first to 25 goals in 30 team games or fewer (Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby: 30 games). Additionally, Ovechkin’s 14 25-goal seasons rank fourth in the NHL since 1993-94 (Jarome Iginla, Jaromir Jagr, Teemu Selanne: 15 total 25-goal seasons each). Ovechkin made his NHL debut in 2005-06. Ovechkin is looking to break a tie with Bobby Hull to become the first player in NHL history to lead the NHL in goals eight times. The 33-year-old leads a group of eight 20-goal scorers this season, six of whom are 30 or younger. Ovechkin (33 years, 201 days as of April 6, 2019, the final day of the regular season) could become the sixth player in NHL history to lead the League in goals at age 33 or older ( in 1932-33: 36 years, 165 days; Gordie Howe in 1962-63: 34 years, 358 days; Nels Stewart in 1936-37: 34 years, 82 days; in 1954-55: 33 years, 228 days; : 1974-75: 33 years, 45 days).

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Saint Nick - Nicklas Backstrom recorded four assists against Detroit on Tuesday, his first four assist game of the season. It also marked Backstrom's 12th career four assist game, tied with Gilbert Perreault for the eighth-most in NHL history. Ovechkin is just the second player in NHL history to go at least 11 seasons between point streaks of 11 or more games (Frank Mahovlich: 11 games in 1960-61, 12 games in 1872-73). The Capitals' franchise record for most consecutive games with a point is 17, twice accomplished by Mike Gartner (Feb. 25, 1981 through April 2, 1981: 24 points; Oct. 11, 1984 through Nov. 21, 1984: 28 points).

Holtbeast - Braden Holtby stopped 35 of 37 shots against Detroit on Tuesday. Since Nov. 7, Holtby is 8-4-0 with a 2.15 goals against average and a .934 save percentage. Since the start of the 2017-18 season, Carlson's 100 points (20g, 80a) ranks first among all defensemen. Carlson's 1.49 points per 60 minutes of five-on- five play over the course of his career are tied for second among defensemen selected in the 2008 draft (Erik Karlsson: 1.90 points per; Roman Josi: 1.49 points per), and his 2.17 points per 60 at five-on-five rank first over the last two seasons.

Nicklas Backstrom has earned 56 points (14g, 42a) in 53 career games against the Hurricanes, tied for the most points he has registered against an NHL franchise (Tampa Bay: 56 points).
