SERIES: The Saints and Tigers will meet for the 10th and 11th time in the history On Saturday: 2-7-0 of the two programs this weekend with the Saints holding a 7-2-0 series edge. The Saints are a perfect 5-0-0 in games against RIT at Appleton Arena, but RIT is coming off a 6-5 over- time win in the last meeting between the two teams at Blue Cross Arena last fall. The Saints won the third three meetings between the two all of which came while RIT was competing as a Division III program. SLU won 5-3 in 1982-83, 7-4 in 1983-84 and 5-3 in 1987-88, all at Appleton. RIT recorded its first win over the Saints in its first year as a Division I program as Jocelyn Guilmond made 66 saves in a 3-2 win at RIT in 2005. The Saints came back to win the next night and won the next four before RIT’s win last season.

AND THEN THERE WERE TWO: No Saint had ever been named ECAC Player of the Month in the relatively brief history of that award, but that all changed with the great start to the current season. Kyle Flanagan was named ECAC Player of the Month for October and became the first Saint to earn the Hockey Commissioner’s Association’s National Player of the Month award and Matt Wenninger was selected as the ECAC Goaltender of the Month. Flanagan scored five goals and assisted on six in the four October games for the Saints and had four points with three goals in the Western Michigan series and seven points with two goals and five assists in the sweep at Maine. Weninger, who won for the first time as a Saint in the month of October when he beat West- ern Michigan 4-3 in overtime in the season opener, has a 1.75 goals against average and a .952 save percentage in the first four games. Both Flanagan and Weninger were nominees for the November awards as well.

THAT SATURDAY THING: While the Saints have a 5-0-2 record on Friday, they are 2-7-0 on Saturday and have lost six straight on Saturday night. It should be noted, however that all five losses are to nationally ranked teams: Western Michigan (10th), Yale (17), Quinnipiac (5th), Boston University (9th) and Cornell (12). The Saints have averaged just two goals per game in Satur- day night encounters while allowing 3.33. SPECIAL TEAMS: Special teams have been a big part of the Saint start to the season. Despite a fall-off after a hot start, the Saints are still ranked 16th nationally in power play success at 20.0 percent and are 15th in penalty kill at 86.1 percent. Greg Carey is tied for the national lead in power play goals with six and Kyle Flanagan is tied for seventh with four. Flanagan, Carey and Justin Baker are one-two-three in power play points overall among ECAC players. Flanagan has four goals and nine as- sists, Carey six goals and seven assists and Baker two goals and seven assists the power play. George Hughes has two goals and five assists, Chris Martin had two goals and three assists, Gunnar Hughes has a goal and two assists and Jordan Dewey has an assist for other Saint players with power play points. The Saint penalty kill had a streak of 12 straight kills ended by Vermont when the Catamounts scored on their first chance on Dec. 15. SLU has also been successful in staying out of the penalty box...allowing just seven power play chances in the last three games and averaging 10.9 penalty minutes per game, second fewest among all ECAC teams overall and 121th fewest nationally.

FORMULA FOR SUCCESS: In their seven wins this season the Saints have outscored the opposition 30-9 with the 30 goals coming on 195 shots (15.4 percent success rate). The power play is 10 for 31 (32.3 percent) with the goals coming on 41 shots (24.4 percent conversion). The penalty kill has been successful in 32 of 33 tries and Matt Weninger has stopped 195 of 204 shots, a .956 save percentage. Kyle Flanagan (5-13-18) and Greg Carey (8-6-14) have combined for 32 of 81 Saint points scored in the seven victories.

TOP OF THE LISTS: Kyle Flanagan and Greg Carey are at or near the top of the national statistics through the first half of the season. Flanagan is third in points per game (1.56) and is tied for fourth in points with 25, tied for second in assists per game at 1.00 and tied for tthird in assists with 16. Carey is ninth in points per game at 1.35 tied for first in goals scored with 12, third in goals per game at 0.71. Justin Baker and George Hughes are tied for 13th in points per game by defensemen at 0.76.

MORE HONORS: The early season honors continue to pile up for Saint captain Kyle Flanagan. Flanagan was named one of the 20 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award prior to the Princeton-Quinnipiac series. He joins Nick Bailen of RPI, Danny Biega of Harvard and Nick D’Agostino of Cornell as the ECAC representatives on the finalist list. The list will be trimmed to 10 at mid-season.

BROTHER ACTS: George and Gunnar Hughes continue a Saint tradition of brother acts on the same team as the Saints have now had a pair of brothers playing in the same season each year since 2004-05. Mark and Paul Wallman played for Saint teams from 2004-05 through 2006-07, Jared and Derek Keller played on teams from 2007-08 through 2009-10, and in 2010- 11 the Saints had Kyle and Sean Flanagan and Pat and Matt Raley on the team.
