Lutheran Church, Glencoe Across from the Courthouse Ph: 320-864-3131 1011 Armstrong Ave. All about Lent Open 7 Days A Week Glencoe, MN his past weekend I went to the CineMagic Century 9 Theater in Hutchinson to see “Risen”. It’s a historical fiction 320-864-4412 movie about a high ranking Roman soldier who is sent by Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea, to investigate the case Tof the empty tomb of Christ. This soldier, Clavius, is an unbeliever who follows the physical evidence at the empty tomb and the accounts of eyewitnesses in his search for truth. His orders are to disprove the stories that were circulating that Jesus had risen and thus to put down any potential trouble to the Empire that may arise. Without giving away too much of the story line, the movie deals much with how those who encountered the risen Christ were affected in one way or another by Him. In my opinion, “Risen” is a movie worth seeing whether you’re a believer in Christ or not. The acting is fine, the story is in- triguing, and the historical perspective it gives on a crucial time in history is compelling. Personally, as a pastor and as a Chris- www.firstmnbank.com tian, I wish some of the parts of the movie would have stuck closer to the Bible and I wish at least some mention would have Your Community Bank been made that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross was for the forgiveness of the sins of the world. Nevertheless, I think the movie Since 1881 does succeed in making one think, ‘How would I have reacted if I were in the place of Clavius? What would I have said, what Municipal Electric Plant would I have done if I had met the resurrected Jesus Christ?’ 320-864-3161 305 11th St. E., Glencoe, MN One of the scenes depicted in the movie that is loosely based on the Bible is that of how the disciple Thomas reacted to the Glencoe, MN Phone: (320) 864-5184 news that Jesus had risen. The Bible tells us in John chapter 20 that Thomas was not present with the other disciples when Member FDIC Christ appeared to them on the evening of the resurrection. Thomas refused to believe the others that Jesus had actually risen until he could see and touch Jesus for himself. One week later, Thomas had that very opportunity and he became convinced. Jesus then said to Thomas, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” The Gospel writer John goes on to say, “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by be- TAILOR lieving you may have life in his name” (John 20: 30-31- English Standard Version). We may not have that opportunity to see Jesus face-to-face right now, but we do have His sure and certain Word, the Bible, TESS which tells us, “God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have www.platocustomconcepts.com eternal life” (John 3:16- ESV). Blessed are those who believe this. Forgiveness of sins and eternal life are theirs.
