LAST YEAR, StrongPack established a Nigerian operation with a mission to become Africa’s number one high-quality, non-alcoholic contract packaging company. As part of its greenfield project, the company installed four Sidel lines, including a can line, two regular PET lines, and one PET line integrating Sidel’s Actis (Amorphous Carbon Treatment on Internal Surface) plasma technology. The latter was critical to improve to address challenges in the local distribution chain. In addition, by choosing Actis, bottles could be lightweighted by 25%. Carbonated soft drinks (CSD) are the second most popular beverage category in Africa, after bottled water. This segment continues to grow as a result of steadily increasing consumer purchasing power on a continent with the youngest demographic profile. However, distribution is complicated by long and difficult transportation routes, creating strong demand for bottled drinks with longer shelf life. Within this emerging market, Nigeria is an interesting case. With almost two-million inhabitants and a population growth of 2.6% in 2018, it is enjoying healthy CSD performance, a phenomenon mainly driven by price competition and aggressive marketing campaigns from global CSD players. Spotting these business opportunities, StrongPack started its operation as a co-packer of non-alcoholic beverages with ambitious goals. ‘In the next five years, complete PET lines – one standard PET line and the we want to become the number one non-alcoholic other integrating Sidel’s Actis technology. contract packaging company in Africa,’ explains Planned on a new site close to Lagos, the project StrongPack MD, Del Tupaz. ‘At the same time, we aim was especially challenging and StrongPack was to be Nigeria’s leading high-quality co-packer, whatever looking for an open-minded, innovation-driven, the brand,’ he adds. proactive partner. ‘Throughout this demanding When starting the Nigerian operation, StrongPack project, we partnered with Sidel’s well-structured needed to differentiate its capabilities from existing team,’ remarks Del Tupaz. ‘Together with Sidel project market players, in a country that has historically managers and line designers, we regularly evaluated chosen returnable glass bottles as the main beverage progress and made adjustments when necessary. Actis technology extends beverage shelf life by a factor of five, while enabling pack lightweighting, without compromising recyclability – for instance, the reduction of the 350ml bottle weight down to 15.5g allows savings of around three tons of resin/day. Helped by the Actis technology and enhanced shelf life, StrongPack plans to reach additional markets in West Africa. Choosing Actis also offered the opportunity to develop a new bottle designs that not only match Actis’ requirements but also stand out at point of sale – a key factor in the Nigerian market. ‘We’re particularly pleased with Actis – so much so that we’ve ordered a second PET line featuring this technology,’ concludes StrongPack chairman, Eric Thibault. 21-28_PM_PPMOct19.indd 22 2019/11/05 11:02 AM ‘These systems are designed to meet ever growing demands for higher quality, lower costs, faster turnaround times and flexibility,’ explains TAD’s Adrian Gildenhuys. ‘Using tried-and-tested technology, HDI units provide fault-free, high- quality flexo imaging at a fraction of the cost of competitive systems,’ Adrian maintains. ‘The high resolutions, fast imaging speeds, combined with ease of operation and low cost of ownership are making Cron’s products increasingly successful in the South African market.’ Both Guy de Cafmeyer and Lee Collins are quick to agree with these claims. According to Guy, this represents a ‘seriously cost-efficient investment’ backed by excellent local support. ‘In addition,’ he reports, ‘the warranty on this machine is longer than that offered by other suppliers, and includes a two-year guarantee on the laser head.’ Lee is equally enthusiastic, particularly remarking on the exceptional productivity achieved. ‘The quality of our plates has been taken to a new level and the production speed is amazing,’ he says. Award-winning flexo printing Raised Image has a sterling reputation for producing award-winning quality plates for blue-chip customers such as Amcor, CTP flexibles, Colpak and Zibo Plastics; and now, thanks to some aggressive marketing, sales are spreading to Namibia and Zimbabwe. In fact, Raised Image has long been a supplier of half-tone work for Zimbabwe’s Natpak, but is soon set to have an even closer association as the Esko Advance platesetter (replaced by the earlier Cron installation) has now been shipped to Natpak’s Harare plant, in another deal facilitated by the TAD team. Another arrow in Raised Image’s quiver has been the embracing of the Mellow Colour system that ensures colour conformance. Working alongside Mellow Colour-audited flexible packaging printers, Raised Image is using the system for proofing. According to Guy de Cafmeyer, a repro house also needs to be Mellow Colour compliant since its proofs are often the ‘virtual’ specimen prints submitted for electronic approval. ‘Our DTP operators have been trained on the system by the DigitalView team (local representatives for Mellow Colour), and have also spent time at a compliant printshop, to enable them to understand and use the system to its full extent,’ he explains. Enter Mellow Colour

WITH an increasing number of multinational customers, today’s flexible packaging suppliers have to meet stringent controls for colour-critical products; and this is where Mellow Colour comes into the picture. Mellow Colour’s ISO 12647 colour management technology means predictable results are the norm for audited printing plants. www.packagingmag.co.zaMellow Colour provides colour quality management systems for some of the world’s most colour critical brands, and provides technical training for leading print and packaging suppliers. Training includes auditing the production workflow, colour theory and guidance on Mellow Colour software and procedures. Mellow Colour’s virtual sign-off system scores each print job against the internationally-recognised ISO standard allowing the print supplier to unload colour data to the brand owner, avoiding the need to conduct costly and time-consuming press-side colour passes. Colour quality and consistency are guaranteed by adhering to predetermined standard operating procedures, and a print scoring system measures grey balance, dot gain and overprints.

◄ This year, a change was evident on the Nilpeter stand: the traditional white jackets had changed to blue jerseys! Celebrating his final international show attendance and 48-year relationship as a Nilpeter distributor, Del Wiggill, sales director of CSM Machine Sales, took his heirloom white jacket to Brussels and asked friends to sign it. ‘The comments brought tears to my eyes,’ says Del, who, nearing 70, no longer enjoys the rigours of international travel. ‘However, I have no plans to retire anytime soon, and look forward to many more years working with Nilpeter,’ he asserts. A trio of successes

THREE of CSM Machine Sales’ principals – Nilpeter, AB Graphic and Rietstack – reported positive results from participation at Labelexpo Europe. The show marked the world première of Nilpeter’s FA-26, built for inline, value-added short-run flexible packaging and labels – from pouches and sachets to wraparound, shrink sleeve and other types of labels. ‘Feedback on the FA-26 was overwhelming – better than we could have hoped for – with concrete projects and several hot leads,’ comments Nilpeter’s sales & marketing director, Jakob Landberg. Nilpeter also showcased the FA-17 (pictured right), running the company’s 100th anniversary Nodo d’Amore wine label job, using high-build inkjet varnish, high-opacity white inkjet, and semi-rotary die-cutting units. Two shrink sleeve labelling jobs, for a protein powder and drinking yoghurt, were run on the FA-22 that’s designed to meet market trends for wider-web label printing and features a 560mm quick-change job running on the FA-17 and the high-quality shrink die-cutting unit, as well as UV lamination and UV LED sleeves running on the FA-22 proved to be great drying capabilities. conversation starters – initiating several projects that ‘Visitors were armed with plans for serious will continue in the coming months.’ investments, and it was great to see that our industry According to Jakob, Nilpeter had a great show, with – despite challenging times – is very optimistic and the famous bell ringing in the double digits to celebrate proactive,’ Jakob remarks. ‘The impressive wine label the finalisation of sales. ‘Visitors also spoke highly of

XEIKON PREPRESS demonstrated recent improvements to its ThermoFlexX imaging range, with the latest in hybrid software developments, and Woodpecker Nano 2000 surface screening. According to sales director, Christophe Lievens, ThermoflexX LED (Catena-E) offers the next level in automation; after fully automatic loading and unloading of the plates in the ThermoFlexX 80 imager, the plate now moves automatically into the LED exposing unit for automatic main and back exposure. Automation on the ThermoFlexX 48, 60 and 80 can further be streamlined via the ‘Flexo Workflow Bundle’, which features Hybrid Software Packz Native PDF editor, Hybrid RIP and Cloudflow Workspace for workflow tasks, file and management automation. Christophe points out that the ThermoFlexX system is an open system, which makes input file management straightforward and seamless, with the operator not even needing to be aware if a TIFF or LEN file is to be imaged. ‘Output is also fully open, ensuring support in the manufacture of digital flexo and letterpress plates, whether they’re processed with solvents, water or thermal,’ he notes. The second major highlight on the stand was Woodpecker Nano 2000’s surface screening. Christophe explains that Xeikon developed the microsurface structure to achieve higher density, smoother printed solids with cleaner half-tone dots and no bridging. ‘Woodpecker Nano gives fantastic results with lower resolution input files (2 000dpi), and is the finest (highest frequency) microsurface structure available for digital flexo plates,’ he enthuses. Other new developments, such as direct laser engraving of special Flint Nyloprint plates for pad-printing and imaging 10 160dpi and above files for security, were also on display.

Legend has it that George Stephen, inspired by his passion for grilling the best steaks for family and friends, invented the Weber kettle grill in 1952. He knew that a rounded cooking bowl with a lid was the key to success. He added three legs and a handle and started a grilling revolution that has spread worldwide. Local spice distributor, Petrow Foods, has partnered with the maker of this popular brand to offer an array of seasoning blends, rubs, marinades, sprays and sauces. Established in 1983, Petrow Foods forms part of the CJ Petrow Group and draws on the experience of its international alliances to deliver the latest product developments. The 63mm one-start neck thread, large- facetted grinder has an imported PET base bottle and a tough five-part acrylic/ABS grinder mechanism manufactured by Cape-based Global Grinders. A finalist in the 2019 FTASA Print Excellence Awards, its front and back labels are printed by KB Labels on a Mark Andy 2200, using Kloof (KZN)-based The Designerie’s artwork, repro by Kiley Baker, Du Pont plates and Flint inks. It was early days, and the water-based ink smeared easily, resulting in the device becoming known as ‘Bibby’s Folly’. Since then, numerous innovations have revolutionised the flexographic printing industry. Flexography is derived from the Latin word ‘Flexus’, literally translated as ‘bending’. Often referred to colloquially as flexo, it’s used to print on any flexible material, ranging from plastics and metallic films to paper and cellulose film. Over the years there’s been a perennial debate surrounding the merits of flexo versus gravure. The main advantages of flexography over gravure are its diverse and versatile ink and substrate applications, and cost-effectiveness for short or medium print runs. ▲ CONVENIENTLY SIZED TO The 12.5kg Botselo maize bag in woven recently switched from imported SQUEEZE-AND-GLUE gravure-printed bags to local flexo-printed versions. Pratley Putty was the first product of its type in the world and had the distinction of being used on one of the US space modules that landed on the moon. It was also used in a repair of the Golden Gate Bridge spanning San Francisco Bay, and locally to repair holes in two sunken ships that were raised and ultimately sailed the high seas again.
