My visit with Pope Francis on January 16 left me with these simple teachings of the Lord, truths of how we should act toward all people. And to joyfully share this love with one another. Our Holy Father exemplifi es this joy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Pope Francis greeted us with a smile and a handshake. We 15 bishops from Region IX (Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska) were on our ad limina visit to Rome. We met him individually, then we were seated. He sat down in the midst of us and said welcome, we are brothers here. Through an interpreter (Italian), the Holy Father asked what was on our minds. For over two hours he listened, responded, encouraged us, prayed. The Vicar of Christ gave me much hope in a world that oft en seems hope-less. A master story teller, The Most Rev. John B. Brungardt, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City, visited with Pope Francis during his Ad Limina he told funny tales and heart-wrenching visit in mid-January, along with the three other Kansas bishops, and 11 bishops from Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska. stories all fi lled with a message of faith in God. Page 24 February 9, 2020 The Southwest Kansas Catholic Pope spends two hours listening to concerns of regional bishops Bishop John Brungardt, fourth from right, was one of 15 bishops from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska making their “ad limina” visit to the Vatican in mid-January to report on the status of their dioceses.

Continued from Page 1 While Bishop Brungardt couldn’t share the details of the topics of discussion, it’s not too hard to imagine that there were difficult topics – topics related to the priest shortage, the plight of immigrants, as well as the issue of clerical abuse, and assisting victims and survivors. “He does not have a pessimistic bone in his body,” Bishop Brungardt said of the Holy Father. “We discussed many difficult topics. Pope Francis answered openly and transparently, then led us to Christ. He truly modeled evangelization with joy.” While not, perhaps, one of the highlights of the trip, one that is memorable at least to sports fans came when the Most Rev. James V. Johnston, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, presented the Holy Father with a Patrick Mahomes’s jersey signed by the Chief’s quarterback. The pope was pleased with the gift, although one can be fairly certain the Argentinian pope prefers soccer (fútbol) to American football. (On the flight back to the United States, when learning of their visit with the pope, a passenger asked, “Oh, are you with the group with the jersey?”) Bishop Brungardt’s meeting with Pope Francis represented a small part of a very busy trip, including several meetings each day with various “dicasteries” (departments directed by the pope). These meetings focused on topics such as immigration and human trafficking, ecology, as well as Catholic education, among many others. For the most part, the meetings were listening sessions for the local bishops to share their concerns on a particular subject. “It was amazing how many [people at the dicasteries] knew Dodge City,” Bishop Brungardt said. “The second most recognized diocese was Wichita. Dodge City and Wichita are famous even at the Vatican.” Throughout the week-long January visit, Bishop Brungardt celebrated Mass each day, offering intentions for the diocese: wedded couples, families, seminarians, priests, Religious, and singles. While in Rome, Bishop Brungardt and the other bishops celebrated Holy Mass in the four major basilicas, including Bishop Brungardt’s favorite, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Wall. “That was the most memorable to me,” he said. “There were portraits of all the popes throughout the cruciform shape, showing the 2000-year history of our Catholic Church.” Once back in the States, Bishop Brungardt’s travels continued to Topeka for a meeting with the Kansas Catholic Conference, where with Archbishop Joseph Naumann and Bishop Gerald Vincke, they discussed pro-life issues and other legislative matters.
