2 To Our Residents: This issue of All Things Cleveland Heights marks the first edition of the combined information from the Focus Magazine and the Parks and Recreation book. In the past, both of these materials published individually twice a year. This new initiative will save on printing costs and postage. The magazine goes out to every household in Cleveland Heights. It is also included in the Relocation packets that are distributed to Real Estate offices and Human Resources offices throughout the area. The entire magazine will be posted on the City’s website (as are all past magazines) for your convenience. We hope you will find this new effort on the part of the City informative and useful. We will continue to explore other areas of efficiency throughout City Departments. As always, we appreciate your comments and ideas. Cleveland Heights will continue to be successful because of the open communication between City Council, the City administration and you, our residents.

our schools Heights High Senior Boxer Wins Olympic Trials Cleveland Heights High School senior Charles Conwell won the U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials in the 165-pound division to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Conwell is only one step away from qualifying for the 2016 Olympics, needing a high finish at the International Qualifying Boxing Tournament in Argentina. The top finishers from that event advance to the August Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One of Charles’ biggest fans at Heights High is his AVID teacher Jill Pompei. AVID is a pro- gram for college-going students and Mrs. Pompei first met Charles when they were both part of the middle school ADID program. “Charles is a very serious student and obviously a very serious athlete,” said Mrs. Pompei. “But what I am most impressed with is that he is a very generous and kind young man.” After the Olympic trials, Charles reflected on his accomplishment andlooked forward. “I’m just thankful for my team, my family, all of my supporters from Cleveland and everywhere else. I’m speechless right now,” Conwell said. “I got started about seven years ago when my dad took me to the gym and we connected with this guy right here, Otha Jones, and ever since then we’ve been working our way up to the top. I can’t wait to go to Argentina. All my dreams are coming true, I’m just thankful right now and overwhelmed.”
