PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE -

Dear Parents, Staff and Students

Welcome back to everyone for 2020, in particular to our new students and to staff joining us this year. This is a school community that works together to create the best possible education for your daughters to flourish. It is a community that values each and every one of our students and staff, and seeks to demonstrate our core values in everything we do. I am proud of the way students and staff in this school reflect our values every day. We have always modelled and promoted the best values, and we always will. We have continued to teach with heart, and care for and support our students and their welfare.

As a whole school staff we have raised the bar for high expectations and quality teaching and programs, resulting in greater success for our students in a plethora of arenas. The high calibre of our students in the academics, leadership, sport, performing arts and public speaking, to name a few, indicates the wide-ranging talents of our students, who are capable of attaining distinguished recognition.

And I am proud to champion the excellence of public education. Your children are receiving the best possible school education available. Public education has 175 years of outstanding achievement. It plays a major role in creating a fair and just society, free of class distinction and allowing for all students regardless of background to have equal opportunities and attain success. P&C I ask all new parents to contribute to your child’s school and join a wonderful group of parents at the first P&C meeting of the year on Wednesday 4 March at 7.30 pm.

School Visitors As a school, we have a duty of care of our students. As such, all visitors to the school must firstly go the office, and if their visit is appropriate beyond the foyer area, sign in as a visitor and be given a visitor’s badge to wear for the duration of their stay in the school. This applies to parents who come to the school to see a teacher or student.

It is not appropriate for parents to email any staff directly. Staff will not respond to any email they receive directly from a parent. Parents are welcome to either write a letter or send an email to the school email address, where it will then be forwarded to the teacher, Deputy Principal or Principal.

Safe Driving Please drive safely in the vicinity of the school. Do not double park outside the school to drop off or pick up your daughter. Do not stop near the pedestrian crossings so you block the vision of students and other drivers. Do not do U turns in front of the school. All of these actions make it dangerous for our girls and we are concerned about their safety.

Wi-Fi Testing Our school participated in research by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) across schools in NSW in Victoria. It was investigating the level of radiation exposure of children from Wi-Fi in schools.

The research indicated that the typical exposure in the classroom was 0.0002% of the allowable Standard. These results were similar to other international studies. Therefore the exposure of students to Wi-Fi radiation levels is extremely low and this study should provide reassurance to parents.

Come Prepared All students are expected to come prepared for school in all subjects, both theory and practical. The expectations include:

1. All students have all writing implements, exercise books, textbooks and subject specific items e.g calculator, dictionary for every lesson for each day. Students also need their netbook or computer device charged. 2. All students bring the necessary equipment and clothing for practical lessons, including PE and sport.

To be appropriately equipped students need a suitable school bag in preparation for a full day’s work.

Lockers are available for hire by students. Important Inclusions in this newsletter for your reference:

1. School Management Plan 2018 - 20 Summary This plan indicates the focus areas of our school community in 2018 - 2020 to create further improvement and enhancement of our school.

2. Year Planner The Year Planner indicates the major events in the 2020 school calendar that have been determined at this time. Of course, there will be many other events, excursions and dates that arise throughout the year – your children will be informed about them during the year.

School Fees for Years 7 – 12 Soon you will receive by email the school fee invoice that relates to your child / children. Parents have the choice of paying school fees in full or in three instalments in Terms 1, 2 and 3. The invoice indicates the fees that are applicable to all students, as well as the costs involved in studying elective subjects in Years 9-12.

All fees can be paid by POP (the preferred on-line payment method), cash, cheque, visa card or by telephone. Fees can be paid to the office in the administration area between 8.30 am and 2.30 pm.

I am aware that many Year 7 student fees have already been paid; we appreciate that very much. It enables us to purchase resources to support our teaching programs early in the year.

School Uniform Most girls are wearing the Mackellar uniform beautifully. The Mackellar school community has high expectations regarding school uniform and our uniform code is strictly enforced. All girls must be in correct school uniform every day, including to and from school. Please assist us by ensuring that your children have the correct uniform and are wearing it in full when they leave home in the morning, and arrive home in the same attire.

A reminder that skirts, dresses and shorts must be worn no shorter than just on the knee. Black, leather, enclosed shoes must be worn. Jewellery is not part of the uniform and can be confiscated until the end of term. Make-up, nail polish and face piercings also are not part of the uniform and must not be worn.

In compliance with the NSW DoE uniform policy the following applies: Students will be excluded from certain school and school-linked activities:  If their clothing compromises agreed upon school community standards articulated in the school uniform requirements, and might be considered damaging to the image of the school in the larger community context;  where the health and safety of the student or of other students, particularly as defined by work health and safety legislation, would otherwise be compromised.

School Leaving Age Since 2010, the compulsory schooling law means that all young people must attend school until they complete Year 10 or turn 17, whichever comes first. A child who has completed Year 10 and is below 17 years must continue schooling unless they participate in full-time paid work or an approved education course, or a combination of both.

Community Support The Rotary Clubs of Balgowlah and Manly provide wonderful support to the school and our students. Last week, these clubs sponsored three of our Year 10 students in attending a Leadership Camp. The girls gained skills in leadership, teamwork and communication, and reported that it was a wonderful and new experience. Mackellar is extremely grateful for the ongoing support for our students that is provided in many ways by Rotary.

We are delighted that the Freshwater Community Bank, Branch of Bendigo Bank has a solid relationship with Mackellar Girls. The bank provides financial assistance, awards, seminars, mentors and other various support. It has provided a $5 000 grant to the school for audio-visual equipment and has provided business mentors for Australian Business Week. Also, Georgia Weston of Year 12 2019 received a $1000 University Scholarship.

We look forward to continuing productive relationships with our community.

Asthma The Asthma Foundation requests that parents be alert and vigilant at this time when a repeated spike in asthma incidents and hospitalisation occurs soon after the return to school from the summer break.

Road Safety  During school travel times 4 or 5 young high school students are injured each week in NSW  The number of transport related casualties during school travel times increases during the first years of high school  Young high school students are more likely to be injured during school travel times than in any other time, including holidays and weekends 3

Lower levels of adult supervision, using public transport, rushing to catch buses, longer school hours, longer travel and heavy traffic at drop off and pick up all contribute.

Parents, please provide your child with advice to raise their awareness of road safety to keep them safe.

School Ambulance Scheme DEC has a licence arrangement covering all DEC schools in NSW. If a student has an accident or falls ill whilst at school or on an organised school excursion or activity, and requires the ambulance service, the cost will be met through the scheme. Students enrolled in Saturday School for Community Languages are also included in the scheme.

For the 2020 school year, this extends to interstate travel for fully supervised school activities, with the exception of South and Queensland. For these, separate individual student travel insurance for activities is required.

We will be continuing on with our focus from 2019 and reminding the girls about the core values we represent at Mackellar. These core values are excellence, care, kindness, integrity, respect, responsibility, cooperation, democracy, fairness and participation.

At Mackellar we want to reward those girls that show these values. Each month we will be targeting one of the core values.

The value for February is KINDNESS - Teachers will be specifically looking for students that show this particular value and pass their name to their Year Advisers who will keep a record of the students and an award will be given out at year meetings at the end of that month.

Congratulations to all the girls who received Values Certificates last year and we look forward to more girls displaying these different values in their everyday life.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - If you have a child who suffers from Asthma, Anaphylaxis, Diabetes or Epilepsy could you please forward the latest up-to-date Action Plan you have for your child to the school, as it is imperative that the staff at Mackellar is aware of your child’s condition in case an emergency arises.

UNIFORM - One of our targets for 2019 is to improve the appearance of our girls at school and in the wider community. To achieve this goal we require your help and support, so ensure your daughter wears the correct full school uniform.

YEAR 7 - Welcome to all Year 7 students for 2020 and their families. The girls are adjusting very well to high school life and the Year 11 Peer Support group has been assisting them in their transition from primary school. If your daughter has not yet been assigned a locker, you need to ensure that the locker fee is paid for, the locker note is returned and that your daughter has a combination lock before she sees Ms Drane or Ms Kelsey in the Science Staffroom in D block.

On 24 March, the girls will receive their first dose of HPV vaccinations run by the NSW Government Sydney Public Health Unit. Your daughter would have brought a vaccination information pack home. Please be aware that the forms must be signed, indicating whether or not you wish for your daughter to be vaccinated. In addition, parents should have received an email regarding the vaccination clinic schedule for the year.

We are very excited for the upcoming Year 7 Camp in Week 8, 18-20 March. The girls will be receiving a checklist that will contain necessary information regarding the camp a few weeks in advance.

Positive Education is taught in W@M (Wellbeing at Mackellar) lessons 3 times per term. These lessons are based on one of the 5 pillars of Positive Psychology – PERMA (Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement).

Year 7 has started the term with a lesson on ‘Bucket Fillosophy’, where a bucket is used to represent their mental and emotional self. Being kind and thoughtful is how you fill someone’s bucket and when you do that you also fill your own. Let your daughters know when they do something that fills your bucket! Finally, to help your daughter

5

be organised and prepared for her lessons, encourage and assist her in using her school diary to establish good habits that will benefit her as the year progresses. Ms Grasso, Ms Drane & Ms Kelsey—Year 7 Advisers

YEAR 8 - We are very happy to see our Year 8 cohort excited to be back at school.

There is a large amount of activity happening this year for the cohort, with the first extracurricular activity being held on Friday 28th February, which is the Year 8 Sleepover where the girls get to spend the night together in the school hall. This is then followed by High Resolves the following week. Other fantastic workshops throughout the year include ‘Managing One’s Emotions’, ‘Stand Tall’, ‘KYDS’ which focuses on body image, positivity and overall wellbeing and Cyber-Safety. Students gain important messages from these welfare initiatives.

This year the Year 8 cohort will continue working through the innovative well-being program at Mackellar (W@M) which is based on Martin Seligman’s PERMA approach to mental health. As parents and teachers, we know that your children’s feelings have an impact on their daily functioning, including their behaviour, productivity and creative expression. No matter how apparently smart or confident, each child is still a child first and foremost, with all the anxieties that go with being young, vulnerable, and inexperienced in life. The W@M activities aim to assist your child to have a more positive perspective about the ups and downs of daily life. They are better able to stretch themselves cognitively, creatively, productively, and socially. Those who are able to manage their emotions are stronger for it. They’re ready to welcome learning experiences, to ask questions and to discover new, creative, and comprehensive ways of thinking about the world around them. Additionally, your daughter will be encouraged to discover her strengths or competencies and opportunities, which is a critical component of reinforcing her resilience, emotional needs and self-reflection. Emotional literacy is a fundamental aspect of healthy child development.

Again, welcome back to all Year 8. We look forward to a positive, productive and healthy 2020! Mrs Goykovic, Ms Adams & Ms Maxwell—Year 8 Advisers

YEAR 9 - Welcome back Year 9! It’s almost unbelievable to us that you’re commencing your third year of high school. Not so long ago, you were arriving off the school buses for the first time, over-packing your back packs and losing your way around the blocks! As our new Year 7s start finding their way around, try to remember those fears and hopes from the beginning of school and be supportive to our newest members. As older girls, Year 9 are role models to the younger students and it’s important to maintain the high standards of Mackellar Girls in order to lead the way. This term is filled with many exciting events and opportunities, from the Swimming Carnival this week and later this term a Literacy Day and the Year 9 Problem Solving Day.

A reminder that with Wednesday afternoon sport beginning this year for Year 9, it’s important that all students wear the correct sports uniform, including the school sports shorts. As well as this, all socks must be visible. In the first W@M lesson this term, students focused on “Mind Full, or Mindful”. To help avoid overreacting when negative feelings are triggered students are encouraged to use STOP to improve mindfulness and react in an appropriate way. This involves Stopping - Taking a breath - Observing Yourself - Proceeding with caution. Students watched the clip by Smiling Mind: Introduction to Mindfulness Mediation: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Sceq4mtZhjl Ms Karandonis, Ms Beeby & Mr Maconachie —Year 9 Advisers

YEAR 10 - It is lovely to see the Year 10 cohort arrive back excited and eager to achieve their personal best this year. There are a number of extra-curricular activities throughout each term for Year 10 so please check the school calendar. Two important dates to mark in your diary include Week 10 Monday 30 March which is Y7/10 P/T evening (3.30-7pm) and Term 2 Week 1 28 April Year 10 Subject Information Evening for Years11-12 2021 -2022.

Just a reminder that Julijana Joldzic the Assistant Year Adviser is on leave this year and Caren Leung in the TAS faculty has taken on the role. We are both available and very happy to address any concerns or provide advice where needed.

This year in W@M, topic areas include examining mindfulness, grit, growth mindset, gratitude and finding your ikigai.

In Term 1 the first two lessons are Mindfulness in Week 3 and Grit in Week 9. Although many adults may not see it, teens have very stressful lives. And as such we often don't recognise the emotional and mental challenges teenagers face daily.

From trauma and bullying to expectations and responsibilities, teens must deal with stress coming at them from all angles. Unlike adults, they haven't learned how to properly manage negative emotions, high- pressure situations and responsibilities.

6

Understanding mindfulness for teens is therefore so important. Mindfulness activities and anxiety exercises for teens can help adolescents stay grounded when everything around them seems spiraling out of control. What we know is that many people, especially teens, tend to see the world in stark black and white terms. Either the world is ending or they're sitting on top of it – there's rarely any middle ground for balanced emotions.

That's why mindfulness for teens is so important. It doesn't teach you to ignore emotions. Instead, it trains the mind to take a step back and process situations and thoughts before deciding how to act. Mindfulness essentially teaches a person how to respond to situations thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively. These simple mindfulness activities for your daughter(s) can help ground thoughts, centre emotions, and encourage thoughtful behavior. They include:  Breathing exercises: Spend five minutes each morning and night sitting alone in a quiet place. Have your daughter focus on their breathing while slowly taking deep breaths in and out. This helps centre thoughts before leaving the home for school and other busy activities.  Grown-up colouring books: These colouring books have intricate patterns that require high levels of focus without being stressful. Adding colour to the interesting designs is a soothing activity that encourages teenagers to finish things they start and concentrate on tasks.  Awareness: Sit in a quiet place with your eyes closed. Take deep breaths in and out focusing on the task at hand. After spending about a minute concentrating on your breathing, move your focus to individual feelings and sounds like the feeling of the seat or birds chirping. Try not to attach labels to these experiences – just experience them without reacting. You'll notice how quickly the mind tries to react and label things. Do this for about 10 minutes.

In the second W@M session students will discuss the importance of grit: the power of passion & perseverance and watch a Ted Talk (6.12m) by Angela Duckworth. https://www.ted.com/talks/angela_lee_duckworth_grit_the_power_of_passion_and_perseverance Ms Biswell & Ms Leung—Year 10 Advisers

YEAR 11 - We welcome back Year 11 in their new white shirts! It has been amazing to see our students settling in to the swing of Year 11, especially in regards to their positive attitudes and resilience in the face of new routines and responsibilities.

We’d like to encourage Year 11 to establish healthy and organised study routines early on this year to set them up for Year 12. The sooner these are established, the easier the transition will be down the track. Approach this challenge with enthusiasm and determination!

The Year 11 timetables differ greatly from the junior timetable. Many students will have offline classes, and this means that students may start earlier or later, and finish earlier or later, than they have in past years. Year 11 must swipe in at the front office using their student ID card to register their attendance. It is also important that study periods during the day are used productively, and for safety reasons students are not able to leave the school grounds before their last period of the day.

Maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle is critical to ensuring that students don’t burn out or overburden themselves. Year 11 should ensure that they make adequate time for relaxation outside of school, and during school time, students also have ‘DEAR’ – Drop Everything and Relax. Year 11 can walk around the oval, seek the assistance of teachers or meditate during this time.

Coming up this term are many exciting events! The Swimming Carnival is coming up in Week 3, and in Week 4 Year 11 will have a Study Skills session; more information to come regarding this valuable event. Later this term, Year 11 will also have a GP Visit, where students will hear from GPs about important medical issues and be able to ask any questions they might have in a safe and secure environment. The aim of the program, delivered by local General Practitioners and nurses, is to develop our students’ confidence in their understanding of medical literacy such as Medicare, health care services within the local area and specific youth health issues.

Congratulations to our Year 11 Peer Support Leaders who have worked so hard, and with so much care, to help our new Year 7s make the transition into high school. Ms Ravenscroft & Ms Coles—Year 11 Advisers

YEAR 12 - Welcome back Year 12 for your final year of school at Mackellar Girls. We want to wish all students the best of luck for the coming year. This is your last year of school and not only does that mean completing your HSC and working hard to achieve your goals, but also working towards becoming the best person you can be.

This is your last year to utilise the fantastic resources at Mackellar and create wonderful memories and 7

opportunities for yourself. Already we have seen some lasts go by. Your last first day of school, your last school photograph. However, you will have many firsts to come and we want to see you take this year in your stride and feel proud to be a Mackellar girl. Your Half Yearly Exams will be here before you know it – so organise yourself now. Create a study timetable, start summarising your notes, and use graphic organisers such as mind maps to help you synthesise all your information. Use meditation to help you manage your stress – it has so many benefits, including increasing your ability to perform academically.

This year will also see you look to the future and start planning for life after Mackellar. The fabulous Ms Erskine has organised University information talks that will take place during Year Assemblies. Her emails have a wealth of knowledge about your options when you leave school.

Don’t forget to meet regularly with your mentor, as they can help you get organised, assist you in managing stress, and discuss your plans for the future.

Looking forward to a fantastic year full of good times and fun memories! Ms Peachey & Mrs Reed—Year 12 Advisers

NUMERACY CENTRE

NSW SCHOOL-BASED IMMUNISATION PROGRAM

Each year NSW Ministry of Health offers the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school-based vaccination program.

Year 7 students

 dTpa vaccine (Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (whooping cough) as a single dose  Varicella vaccine (chickenpox) as a single dose; and  Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in a 3-dose schedule at 0, 2 and 6 months (students who commence HPV vaccination in Year 7 but do not complete the course may be offered catch-up doses at school in Year 8)

Parent Information Kits have been sent home to parents/carers. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/carers are advised to read all the information provided, complete the Consent Form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their child to receive and return the completed consent form to their child’s school. Please ensure the child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

If you do not wish for your child to be vaccinated, please indicate this in writing.

Parents/carers who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so in writing to the School Principal. The procedure for withdrawal of consent is on the NSW Ministry of Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/ immunisation.

To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses through the year where possible.

Please note that for the HPV vaccine only, parents/guardians must record their Medicare Number (all 10 digits and the 11th number beside the child’s name) on the Consent Form, as this is required to record the student’s information on the National HPV Register and for female students only, link to the National or State Cervical Screening Program.

LANGUAGES 2020

Wilkommen! It is a big year for the Languages faculty as we implement new syllabuses, introduce Y11 Spanish Beginners and continue running great events such as Y8 Language Day, Oktoberfest, Tanken Centre excursions, food experiences, NBSC Languages Short Film Festival and competitions.

We would like to welcome Kiyoka Kubo who has joined our faculty and is teaching Japanese, French and Year 7 Languages in 2020. She has enjoyed meeting all of her classes and we look forward to working with her.

Parents often ask ‘How can we help our daughter to learn languages’? All students have access to Google Classroom. We use this to give summaries of what was taught each lesson, send homework reminders and provide short videos/facts and resources to help students to study their chosen language. Ask them to show you!

All students have access to Education Perfect. Each week we set tasks so that students can revise vocabulary, practice using writing, reading, listening and speaking skills and also to help them prepare for upcoming lessons. Learn the language! We encourage all students to teach the language to their family members. Teaching is one of the best ways to ensure that you know the vocabulary and systems of language.

Research shows that the best way to support your daughter to learn a language is to be positive about language learning! Talk about the benefits, share your experiences of times when you wish you could have spoken another language, tell them about the people you’ve met who spoke other languages and how much your life was enriched by these meetings. Ms Mary-Anne Bianchin Head Teacher Languages

FROM THE LIBRARY - WELCOME to all our new Mackellar students -

LIBRARY WEBSITE: Check out the MACKELLAR LIBRARY WEBSITE for suggestions for your next great read, how to use the new APA referencing tool, HSC support, how to become an expert in all kinds of tech tools including G Suite, Microsoft 365 and Prezi (Tech tools) and so much more http://mackellarlibrary.weebly.com/

BOOK CLUBS: Can’t stop reading? Love to talk endlessly about your reading experiences? Join a lunchtime bookclub! More information on the Library screen and Daily Notices.

BORROWING: Print books may be borrowed for 3 weeks with an option to renew. Seniors may borrow for extended periods. Just ask! Free e books and audio books can be borrowed for 2 weeks. Over 1400 titles to choose from. Check out the links on our library website (just use Student Staff Links on the Mackellar website).

BYOD SUPPORT: Our experienced IT staff are located in the library and are on hand to assist students who have problems connecting to the school’s wi-fi. Laminated step-by-step guides are available to help students.

LIBRARY LOVERS’ WEEK - Why not have a go at finding true love between the covers of a book? Visit the library during Week 3 and choose a mystery book, wrapped in brown paper and string.

DEAR: Teachers and Mackellar students in Years 7-10 Drop Everything and Read every Tuesday and Thursday morning for 15 minutes. This is a wonderful opportunity to relax with a book. Check out the library’s great fiction, manga and graphic novel collection for DEAR ideas … and why not suggest new titles?

LIBRARY ETIQUETTE: Seniors may bring their bags into the library but students in Years 7-10 should leave their bags outside. Valuables should be brought into the library. However, the library is a no mobile zone so phones should be kept in uniform pockets or bags. Of course no food or drink with the exception of water should be consumed in the library.

LOST PROPERTY: The library is the collection point for lost property in the school. If personal items are labelled with an initial and surname our staff can easily return items to the correct owner.

SCHOOL MAGAZINE - The 2019 School Magazine is now available at the Library for those who have paid for it.

MESSENGER DUTY – Students in Year 8 during Terms 1 and 2 and Year 7 during Term 3 and 4, carry out duty as office messengers. This occurs approximately twice over the year and is usually for a half a day only. The girls carry out simple office tasks, deliver messages, help with recycling, filing etc, greet and escort visitors around the school, help the Deputy Principals set up for meetings, conferences etc. They must be dressed in perfect uniform. This is NOT a day to leave books and equipment at home. Girls must bring their books and equipment for all the day’s lessons to school. They visit their class teacher to get class work and complete it if possible between tasks. Students do not miss out on class tests.

Apart from being an invaluable help to the front office and both Deputy Principals and Principal, it is an opportunity to operate in a different environment and gain important skills in organisation and leadership. Girls are often rewarded with a merit slip.

SAFETY – At Mackellar we take a number of steps to protect students and teachers. One of these is to ask all visitors to the school to call at the office first and obtain a visitor’s badge. Students are requested to report anyone who is in the grounds without a badge, to the office immediately.

Supervision is only provided in the playground at recess and lunch and from 8.45am on Mondays. In the afternoon, students should leave the school grounds immediately at the end of the day and go directly home. If they are taking a route through the park, they should try to walk in groups, or at least with one other girl. After 8.00am students who need help or assistance in the morning can see a Deputy Principal who will be in A Block.

PAYMENTS - Our preferred method of payment is POP “Parent Online Payment”. A button to access this online payment system titled ‘Make a Payment’ is visible on the utility bar on the front page of our school’s website nbscmgirls-h.schools.nsw.edu.au. Payment envelopes are available at the front office for cash and cheque payments of excursions and school fees and these can be deposited in the ‘Quick Payment’ box in A block. EFTPOS payments can also be made at the front office.

USE OF SCHOOL DIARIES - Each student is given a school diary for the purpose of recording and planning for assignments and homework. It may be at different times during the year that staff use these diaries to communicate with parents. Parents may also like to use the diaries if they wish to communicate with teachers. It is important that the students get into the habit of using these diaries each day and recording all homework which is set. Please check that your daughter/s are using their diaries regularly and appropriately.

18

MOBILE PHONES, iPODS and their equivalent - If your daughter elects to keep a mobile phone with her during the day, it must be switched off at all times except recess and lunch and kept out of sight. Please do not ring your daughter while she is in class and she will not be permitted to ring you. If her phone is lost or stolen it is her responsibility.

INSURANCE - The school does not carry insurance for students whilst they are at school or involved in school related activities. All claims need to be made through parent’s own insurance policies or through special insurance that can be taken out by parents to cover accidents/injuries related to school.

ATTENDANCE - For learning to occur, girls must attend class. The NSW Government mandates that attendance is compulsory for all students up till the age of 17. Obviously from time to time, whether due to illness or for family reasons, girls are absent from school. Please advise all absences before 9am. Absences can be explained via the parent portal (preferred), SMS, email, phone call or letter from the caregiver.

It is not appropriate for students to miss school because of family holidays. Holidays should happen in the school holidays only.

Only senior students are permitted to start late or leave early depending on the pattern of their classes. It is most important that senior girls use their ID card to swipe in at the front office before going to class. As seniors do not attend roll call, this is our official record of their attendance.

Furthermore, it is important that all girls arrive on time. The school day starts at 8.42am, except Monday when it starts at 9.30am. Persistent lateness without a good reason will result in after school detention.

Please do not make a dentist etc appointment for your daughter during school time. Please remind your daughters that they must attend all timetabled lessons and are not to leave the school grounds without parent and school permission.

At Mackellar we take our “duty of care” very seriously and expect to know where our girls are at all times during the school day.

UNIFORM - On the rare occasion when the wearing of full school uniform is not possible a note must be brought from home with an explanation. This is to be given to a Deputy Principal before school and a uniform pass obtained. Girls out of uniform twice without a note from parents will be placed on after school detention.

Full school uniform (not PE uniform) must be worn to school every day. Girls must change out of their PE uniform immediately after their PE or sport lesson before going to their next class. Years 9 and 10 girls may wear their PE uniform all day on Wednesdays. However, they must wear black leather lace-up shoes in all TAS, Science and Creative Arts lessons.

We remind you also of the importance of wearing hats for sun protection. The uniform shop sells the Mackellar cap, but girls are free to wear their own plain (without writing/design) blue hat.

SAFE SCHOOL FOOTWEAR - The safety of the girls is a very important issue for us at Mackellar. The school diary clearly states that enclosed hard leather school shoes are to be worn.

This type of footwear is specified because of occupational health and safety issues and the duty of care responsibility that teachers have for their students. All girls from Years 7-10 must attend lessons in science laboratories and a large percentage of these students would also have lessons scheduled in TAS classrooms. Additionally, a large proportion of the girls in Years 11-12 would also have lessons scheduled in these classrooms. The nature of these lessons means that there are times when the girls will be working with chemicals, machinery and/or heated liquids.

Whilst all teachers conduct these lessons according to strict safety guidelines, there is always the possibility of accidents. Accordingly, we have stipulated enclosed hard leather shoes as part of the uniform for all girls to promote the safety of the girls in case of accidents. Ballet-type shoes are not uniform. This is in line with the Department of Education Policy on Chemical Safety that stipulates enclosed shoes must be worn in a laboratory.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING PE UNIFORMS AND SPORTS POLICIES - It is compulsory for all students to wear sports shoes during PE and Sport. Canvas shoes are unsafe and unacceptable. We are taking this very seriously and request that parents and students do the same. This is for your own safety.

Correct PE shirt and shorts must be worn for every lesson. If your uniform is dirty, please bring something else that is appropriate to participate in PE lessons, as well as a note to explain the circumstances.

Hats, sun cream and water bottles are necessary, especially in the warmer months. This is for your own health and safety, please be responsible. There are sports visors now available in the Uniform Shop.

Attendance and participation in all carnivals is expected and strongly encouraged.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AT MACKELLAR - If you are involved in a recreational activity that you would like more people involved in, or you would like to put together a Mackellar Team to enter into a sporting competition, please come to the PE office and inform us.

We do need the support of parents and the community in many cases, so ask around and hopefully we can increase the Mackellar domination throughout a variety of leisure pursuits.

Interested in the big issues for women and girls then join the Z club at Mackellar Girls Campus

The Z club is an extracurricular activity offered to all Mackellar students from year 7 through to 12. Supported by the Zonta club of Northern Beaches Inc., the Z club has been successfully running for 6 years and is one of only two clubs operating in NSW High Schools. The Z club meets in the library on a Monday 3-4 times each term during the lunch break to work on projects that deal with social justice issues in the community. Currently we have 31 registered Z club members.

We are not affiliated with any religious group and are part of ZONTA International and the Northern Beaches ZONTA club. Our organisation is closely linked with the United Nations and, as an international volunteer NGO, brings women’s concerns to the UN, suggests solutions and draws public attention to issues.

What does the Z club at Mackellar do?  With the help of all Year 11 students we assemble birthing kits each year which are sent to developing countries. This kit is a cost effective tool used in developing countries to prevent death for both mother and baby in childbirth and associated infections, particularly tetanus. Year 11 last year was able to raise over $2200 which enabled the students to send 2000 birthing kits to Africa via medecins sans frontieres.  Engage in fund raising activities that provide financial help to young women in our community to enable them to continue their education when they would otherwise not do so. This also includes supporting the education of young girls in Maliks Jalali High School (Herat Province) in Afghanistan. The Z club sponsors one young girl who at 15 has just completed her high school diploma and is now studying to become a nurse.  Invite guests to speak about empowerment. We have been privileged to hear the life story of an Industrial Chemist and a Holocaust Survivor. Another speaker who is the Senior Medical Director of International Health and Medical Services for asylum refugees spoke of growing up in South Africa during the Apartheid regime and her Indian heritage.  Discuss a wide range of social justice issues around the world and advertise these concerns using a bulletin news board in the library.  Make breast cushions for women who have undergone breast surgery. These breast cushions are distributed to RPA, Mater and RNS hospitals.  Support the Cancer Foundation by selling Pink Ribbons.  Give material assistance to local Women’s Refuge Centres by helping assemble start up kitchen kits and making library bags for children from displaced homes.  Hold a local campaign against ‘violence against women’ in November.

PEER MEDIATION

If students have been affected by disputes such as name calling, teasing, loss of property or exclusion then Peer Mediation might be a solution. Mackellar Girls Campus offers a Peer Mediation Program which is run by the students for the students. Student mediators have been trained by an accredited trainer.

Students from Year 7 to 9 are encouraged to use this service. Peer mediation is a process where a dispute between two people can be solved in a relaxed environment and both sides can agree on the end result. Both disputants get to say what happened from their side so it can be a fair mediation. The mediators are in Year 10, they are there to listen to both sides of the argument and guide the two disputants, so that hopefully there will be no further conflict.

Everything that happens or is said stays confidential (won’t be revealed, kept private). Students can organise mediation by going to their Year Adviser or Ms Parsifal or a trusted teacher. Students can approach them and ask if they can help organise mediation for the next day or week. Mediation is available every day of the week except Wednesday, as Year 10 is at sport. Peer Mediation is completely voluntary. A teacher may recommend a student go to Mediation but both parties must agree to it.

$100 VOUCHER FOR CHILDREN’S SPORT AND RECREATION FEES

Parents in NSW are now able to start claiming $100 towards extra-curricular sport and other physical activity fees thanks to the NSW Government’s new Active Kids program.

Active Kids will provide a $100 voucher for parents to put towards sporting fees and registration costs for every school-aged child in NSW.

The health of our children is a priority for me and every parent. I hope this makes a difference in enabling you to enrol your child in the sport or physical activity of your choice.

Families will be able to use the voucher for registration and membership costs, as well as fees for activities such as swimming.

The annual voucher will not be means tested because the NSW Government wants every child from every family to get active and involved in community sport and fitness.

Parents are able to use their voucher to claim up to $100 per school-child, per calendar year to reduce the cost of sport registration or membership of approved active recreation activities.

More details about the program and eligible sports is available at sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids or by phoning Ser- vice NSW on 13 77 88

Active Kids Program Questions and Answers

What is Active Kids? -

The initiative aims to get kids more active by reducing the cost barrier to participation.

When can parents apply for a voucher? - Parents can now apply for a voucher. Vouchers can be used until 31 December so there is no rush.

Who is eligible to claim the voucher? - Every child (4.5 - 18 years old) enrolled in school from Kindergarten to Year 12 is eligible. This includes children who are home-schooled or enrolled in secondary school education at TAFE NSW.

The program will not be means tested and one voucher will be available for every child in the family annually. There will be no limits on the number of applications per family, as long as every child is enrolled in school.

Vouchers for 2019 and beyond will commence from 1 January and expire on 31 December each year.

What can the voucher be used for? The voucher can be used for registration or membership fees for structured activities of no less than eight weeks duration that provide a moderate to vigorous level of physical activity, for example: sporting pursuits; swimming lessons; structured fitness program; outdoor education programs; approved active recreation (dance etc); equipment ordinarily provided by the provider on registration for competition.

Physical activity is defined as movement involving large muscles (e.g. running, swimming, aerobic activity). It must be planned, structured and involve repetitive bodily movement which improves or maintains physical fitness.

The vouchers will be redeemable through approved sport, fitness and physical activity providers upon their registration. Parents/guardians/carers will be able to search for registered providers through www.sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids or the Service NSW website. Please note that vouchers cannot be split between multiple clubs or registrations, and therefore you may not be able to claim the full $100.

Note: Parents/carers/guardians of children in rural or remote areas of NSW and/or children with disabilities who may not otherwise meet the criteria may discuss their registration with the Office of Sport.

What can’t the voucher be used for? - Individual items (such as jerseys, socks, boots, etc.) that would usually be purchased from a retailer and paid for by the individual as part of participating in the activity separate to 22

any membership or registration fees charged by the provider.

Excluded activities include: programs that are less than 8 weeks duration; gym membership that is not part of a structured program; activities that are part of the school curriculum or conducted during school hours; after- school care services and tutors; school-run competitions, including weekend inter-school sport competitions or activities; travel to and from competitions.

Why can’t I use the voucher for school organised sport? School sport is managed as part of the school curriculum. The Active Kids program is about getting kids more active, more often. Some sports or activities outside the school curriculum may be approved so check if your provider is approved.

How do I download a voucher? - Parents of an eligible child will be able to download a voucher by visiting www.sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids

How can I check what sports clubs and providers are registered for Active Kids? Parents/guardians/carers will be able to search for registered providers through www.sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids or on the Service NSW Active Kids page.

What if my child’s club or provider isn’t registered yet? - If your child’s club or provider is not on the registered providers list https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-active-kids-voucher, you can encourage your provider to register online www.sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids

Your provider may have a registration application pending as the registration process can take up to 28 days to allow for relevant safety checks of the organisation.

Why were some organisations unable to register for the opening date and why do they have to wait until March? - Many State Sporting Organisations were provided the opportunity to bulk-upload their clubs prior to 31 January. These clubs were assessed and approved under the program rules. Parents have until 31 December to use their 2020 voucher, so there is plenty of time for remaining providers to register and start accepting vouchers.

What if I’ve already paid for my child’s registration without an Active Kids Voucher? - The best option in this situation is to use your voucher for another sport or physical activity later in the year. If you have paid for your child’s sport before the provider was registered for Active Kids and you do not intend to register your child in any other sport or physical activity this year, you may be eligible for a reimbursement. We encourage you to get in touch with a Service NSW customer service representative on 13 77 88 to discuss your eligibility.

How long will it take for me to register for Active Kids and get my voucher? - Registering for and Active Kids voucher takes less than five minutes through the Service NSW online system. Parents will need to register with Service NSW and then apply for an active kids voucher.

What if I want to use the voucher for a winter sport? - Parents have until 31 December to use their 2020 voucher, so there is plenty of time for providers to register and start accepting vouchers.

What if my child turns 19 this year but they are still in school? - If the eligible applicant is 18 and school enrolled at the time of registration, they can redeem the voucher for that season. A school-enrolled young person can claim a voucher up until the day before they turn 19 years old.

What if a child plays sport in another State or Territory? - To be eligible for a voucher, each child must reside in NSW. The club or activity provider where the child registers must also be located and operating in NSW. Scenarios: My child lives in NSW and plays in a NSW club – the child is eligible to claim a voucher. My child lives in QLD and plays in a NSW club – the child is ineligible to claim a voucher. My child lives in NSW, goes to school in VIC – the child is eligible to claim a voucher to be used with an approved NSW provider. My child lives in NSW but plays in a local club located in VIC – the child is eligible to claim a voucher but can’t use the voucher at a Vic provider. They can use the voucher at an approved NSW provider.

Why is Active Kids not means tested? - The NSW Government wants all kids to be more active, more often. Active kids are happy kids and this program also provides a lot of health benefits. Active Kids supports the NSW Governments priority to reduce obesity rates of children by five per cent over 10 years.

The NSW Government is about easing cost of living pressures and all parents with school aged children will have help with sporting and fitness-related costs through this program.

Why are sports such as shooting and darts not included? - This is all about getting kids moving.

Activities such as darts, snooker/billiards and shooting do not meet physical activity requirements set by the Office of Sport.

Why do you need to know my child’s weight and height? - Parents will have the option to opt out of providing their child’s height and weight.

By filling in this section you will assist the Office of Sport with a research study to determine the impact of the program on increasing physical activity for school enrolled children in NSW. No child will be identified as part of this research.

23

Will my information be kept private? - Yes. The Office of Sport will store your information in strict confidence in secure access controlled databases.

If my organisation or provider is not on the list, does that mean I can’t use my voucher? - You are able to use it at any approved provider. If your provider is not on the list, contact them and ask them to sign up to the program. Information on how to sign up to the program is available at www.sport.nsw.gov.au/active kids or by calling 13 77 88

PROVIDERS - Who can register as a provider? - To register as a provider in the Active Kids program you must deliver a structured sport or activity program of at least eight weeks' duration and be a: sporting club/association affiliated with a recognised State Sporting Organisation located in NSW, or; for-profit or not-for-profit activity provider located in NSW.

All providers must hold a current ABN, ACN or Certificate of Incorporation and must not have any outstanding actions or enforcement orders recorded by the Office of Fair Trading. All providers must be approved by, and registered with, the Active Kids Program prior to accepting vouchers.

Providers must hold appropriate skills, experience, or qualifications for low risk activities and appropriate accreditation for high risk activities, specifically swimming and fitness activities. Providers also need to hold Working with Children Check clearances for staff or volunteers, as required.

Note: Providers operating in rural or remote areas of NSW and/or those working with children with disabilities who may not otherwise meet the criteria should discuss their registration with the Office of Sport.

How do you register as a provider? - The Office of Sport has been in consultation with the state sport and active recreation sector. Clubs and associations affiliated with a state or national sport organisation or a peak recreation body should contact their state association about registration, particularly if a central online registration platform is being used to register players or participants.

Individual providers can register with Service NSW from 1 March 2018. After registering online with Service NSW for a MyService business account, providers will be able to register for Active Kids. The registration process may take up to 28 days to allow for relevant checks of the organisation to make sure it is eligible for the Active Kids Program.

When will providers be reimbursed the value of the vouchers? - Providers will be manually reimbursed within 28 days until 1 March 2020 after which reimbursements will occur within seven days, either through the provider’s Active Kids - Service NSW account or through a recognised registration platform (eg a registration website used by a state sporting organisation), approved by the Office of Sport.

Please note that providers will be reimbursed the actual value of the activity up to $100 and do not automatically receive $100 for each voucher.

Can prices be increased by providers? - Providers cannot raise their fees above a reasonable level (i.e. pricing of participation shall not be increased directly as a result of the registration of a provider in the Active Kids program).

Providers cannot apply differential pricing for voucher holder’s vs non-voucher holders. Providers (including sports clubs) shall be subject to audit. Those providers found to have unreasonably increased their fees, or engaged in differential pricing or other breach of the program, may be deregistered as an Active Kids provider.
