RESUMEN/ABSTRACT (150-250 palabras): El presente trabajo de investigación tiene como objetivo establecer la composición mediante el estudio Fitoquímico y Farmacognóstico de extractos en las hojas de Smilax purhampuy. Los parámetros de calidad fueron realizados en el Laboratorio de Productos Naturales de la Facultad de Ciencias Químicas, se reportaron los siguientes resultados: 12.33% humedad, 7.94% cenizas totales, 0.03% cenizas insolubles en ácido clorhídrico, 6.91% cenizas solubles en agua y 10.63% en alcohol. El tamizaje fitoquímico cualitativo manifestó contenido de azúcares reductores, aceites y grasas, fenoles-taninos, triterpenos-esteroides, saponinas y alcaloides. La determinación de iones metálicos se efectuó empleando el método cuantitativo AOAC 965.09, AOAC 986.15; obteniendo 26.60% manganeso, 6.45% cobre y 2.24% sodio, estos minerales en pequeñas trazas son importantes como componentes de los tejidos corporales. Finalmente se evaluó el perfil lipídico mediante el método AOCS Ce 1B-89 indicando lo siguiente: 0.86% ácido láurico, 4.58% ácido mirístico, 24.70% acido palmítico, 10.30% acido palmítico (cis-9), 32.05% ácido oleico (cis-9), 14.54% ácido linoleico (cis), al igual que un total 10.57% de omega 3 (ácido linolénico), 14.54% de omega 6 (ácido linoleico) y 43.84% de omega 9 (ácido oleico), siendo este último contribuyente en los procesos antiinflamatorios. It is a 7.5 acre conservation area, owned by the City of Key West. The KWBG requested that The Institute for Regional Conservation (IRC) conduct a floristic evaluation of its natural areas and grounds and to provide recommendations. Study Design On August 9-10, 2005 an inventory of all vascular plants was conducted at the KWBG. All areas of the KWBG were visited, including the newly acquired property to the south. Special attention was paid toward the remnant natural habitats. A preliminary plant list was established. Plant taxonomy generally follows Wunderlin (1998) and Bailey et al. (1976). Results Five distinct habitats were recorded for the KWBG. Two of which are human altered and are artificial being classified as developed upland and modified wetland. In addition, three natural habitats are found at the KWBG. They are coastal berm (here termed buttonwood hammock), rockland hammock, and tidal swamp habitats. Developed and Modified Habitats Garden and Developed Upland Areas The developed upland portions include the maintained garden areas as well as the cleared parking areas, building edges, and paths.

The degree of anthropic perturbation and/or damage suffered by an ecosystem can be established if the state of synanthropism is known. Three indicators for assessing ecosystem health in a natural ecosystem are proposed: synanthropism, alien species and resilience. Structural and physiognomic conditions in the evergreen forests of the Biosphere Reserve Sierra del Rosario together with the resilience indicator show that these forests are still in good health. They are used extensively in traditional medicines in a number of countries. However, morphological and molecular barcodes analysis, which may assist in the taxonomic identification of species, are lacking in Ecuador. In order to evaluate the micromorphological characteristics of these plants, cross sections of Smilax purhampuy leaves were obtained manually. The rhizome powder, which is typically used in traditional medicines, was analyzed for micromorphological characteristics. All samples were clarified with 1% sodium hypochlorite. Tissues were colored with 1% safranin in water and were fixed with glycerinated gelatin.     ABSTRACT A FLORISTIC STUDY OF A FORMER LAND BRIDGE IN THE BAHAMA ARCHIPELAGO by Mark Leo Daniels A floristic study of plant communities was conducted on the islands of Eleuthera, Little San Salvador, and Cat Island. The objectives of this analysis were to explore the species composition and distribution of dry forest communities among the three study sites, and to propose new classification types to facilitate plant conservation in The Bahamas, as outlined by the International Classification of Ecological Communities for Caribbean vegetation types. Unconstrained ordination, cluster analysis and indicator species analysis indicated two dominant forest types across the three study sites: the Coccothrinax argentata-Reynosia septentironalis and Coccoloba diversifolia-Bursera simaruba Alliances. Nested within these forest types were 8 species associations: Coccothrinax argentata– Reynosia septentrionalis – Pithecellobium keyense association; Zanthoxylum flavum – Jacquinia keyensis – Casasia clusiifolia association; Acacia choriophylla - Pithcellobium keyense - Guapira discolor association; Coccoloba diversifolia- Sideroxylon americanum-Pseudophoenix sargentii association; Maytenus buxifolia- Sideroxylon salicifolium association; Exothea paniculata-Tabebuia bahamensis- Metopium toxiferum association; Guaiacum sanctum association; Eugenia foetida- Exostema caribeaum-Bourreria succulenta association. Since the occupation by early pioneers to the 1970’s much of the habitat was adapted or converted for agricultural practices such as farming as well as cattle raising. Urban development centered mostly in the vicinity of Fort Pierce. Recently urban sprawl has been rampant, especially in the vicinity of Port St. Lucie. With the onslaught of the recent surge of human development and the need for housing combined with exotic pest plant invasions, many of these habitats have become impacted and/or destroyed threatening many of the rare plant species. The intent of this field guide is to provide a quick useful resource for identifying rare state (Florida) listed plants documented within St. Lucie County. Habitats Historically the habitats in St. Lucie County primarily consisted of five types (Figure 1). Dominant habitats were flatwoods and dry prairie throughout most of the County. (Myers and Ewel, 1990; Davis, 1967; Watts and Stankey, 1977). Additional habitats include beach dune, coastal strand, maritime hammock, and tidal swamps on Hutchinson Island on the eastern coast. The Indian River Lagoon region comprised of Atlantic coastal ridge just west of the Lagoon consisting of scrub, scrubby flatwoods, and marshes.
