Servant of God Marcel Van - Vietnamese Redemptorist Brother Marcel Van, C.S.s.R. (1928-1959), was a Vietnamese Redemptorist Brother. During his life, he received locutions and visions from St. Therese of Lisieux, Jesus Christ, and the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is called "The Apostle of Love", continuing the teachings of Saint Therese of Lisieux's "Little Way." He died in a North internment camp and his cause for was opened in 1997 by the Venerable Cardinal Nguyen Van Thuan. (Wikipedia)

Marcel Van was born to a devout Catholic family in Ngam Giao, a village in northern Vietnam. Van was baptized under the patronage of St. Joachim. From early childhood, he had a deep and urgent desire to become a priest.

In 1942, at age 13, Brother Van entered the minor seminary of Lan-Song. In the summer of 1942, he discovered St. Therese of Lisieux's autobiography, “The Story of a Soul,” which was a turning point in his spiritual life. St. Therese's book showed him that holiness is possible even for the little ones, and from then on she was his spiritual sister.

In August 1945, Brother Van began his novitiate in the Redemptorist monastery at Hanoi under the guidance and spiritual direction of his novice master, Father Antonio Boucher C.Ss.R., who was to remain his spiritual director until Brother Van’s incarceration in 1954. Brother Van, had his first “conversation” with Our Lord, during which the young brother was asked to "listen to the words I am saying to you here and put them into writing.” Therefore, Brother Van wrote these conversations and handed the sheets of paper to Father Boucher. Most of the conversations were with Jesus, but occasionally Our Lady and St. Therese also conversed with Van.

Brother Van’s was heavily influenced by St. Therese of Lisieux’s “Little Way,” as well as by St. Alphonsus Liguori, the founder of the Redemptorist order. Of a joyful and playful nature, he is a model of intense faith lived in simplicity, humility and trust in God. Due to the intense trials he went through, he was also deeply united to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross throughout his life.

Like his spiritual sister St. Therese, his life and writings are of great inspiration and comfort to people from all walks of life, from the most learned to the most humble. Cardinal Thuan said about him that “God has sent us a little Vietnamese religious, who has come from the end of the earth to bring the message to the entire world: a simple way, a humble way, an evangelical way, a way of service to the Church in the community. The saints mark their times. Thérèse is a sign for her time. Van is a sign for his time.” ~ Vinh Nguyen We would like to recognize the following young parishioners who received the St. Ignatius of Loyola, Priest (July 31) Bl. Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 26, 2020 PRINCE OF PEACE 8. MISSION APPEAL WEEK-END

THE MISSIONARIES OF LA SALETTE

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic our traditional mission weekend cannot be, however the Mission Office of the Dioceses has decided to have a virtual mission weekend appeal. Please read below about the mission assigned to Prince of Peace.

The Missionaries of La Salette, Province of Mary, Mother of the Americas, located in the United States. We have Missionaries in Haiti, South America (Argentina, Brazil & Bolivia) Africa (Angola, Namibia, Madagascar, Tanzania and Mozambique) and Asia (, Myanmar, and the )

Our Missionaries first goal is to share God’s word and to stress reconciliation. This is what Our Lady of La Salette told them when sharing Jesus’s words.

My name is Fr. Thomas Vellappallil. I am a La Salette missionary from India. I was a missionary to the Philippines for 11 years. Currently I am serving as director of the North American La Salette Mission Center, the office of which is located in St. Louis, MO. What is La Salette? La Salette is a place in in the French Alps, where back in 1846 on September 19th the Blessed Mother appeared to two children, Maximin, 15 years old and Melanie, 11 years old. The Blessed Mother was sent to these two shepherds with the message of reconciliation, prayer, penance and zeal for the Word of God. Today there are almost 1000 La Salette missionaries working in 29 countries especially in the missions of Madagascar, Angola, Tanzania, Mozambique, Haiti, Philippines, Myanmar, India, Argentina and Bolivia.

In Haiti, we know how sad the situation was after the 2010 earthquake. It hit them without any warning. In moments, lives were changed forever as we watched with hearts broken and sorrowful. Our missionaries have been ministering there for the last 12 years and it is heart-breaking to hear the stories of people they are serving. 1.8 million people were left home- less. 316,000 people died in that disaster. There are thousands of child-slaves in Haiti, who are abused and thrown out into the streets with no money, no education and no friends. I was privileged to visit Haiti for a week. Upon returning, I thought of the many people I had met who live in entire poverty, some even without a home. The road to recovery and to rebuild this nation will take years and years but the healing has begun. Jesus once said, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded”. I am moved by this country and its people. The North American La Salette Province through its Mission Office will continue to collaborate and support the needy children with their education and well-being that would bring about hope for a better and brighter future. How can we help? $20 buys a school lunch for one student for one month. This is often the only meal they will get in a day. Just $30 will buy a child school supplies for a year. $50 buys a goat for a family. $12 will pay a child’s school tuition for one month. For me it is not all about money but is making a difference in the life of people who are less privileged and less fortunate. There is hope for these people and we are able to reach out to help them only because of the generosity of people like you.

Bolivia is the poorest country in South America. The Church does such a beautiful ministry fo- cused on family and children. They have a program called “Feeding the children”. The students from both public and private schools come by the church to be fed a meal every day. This is because the parents cannot afford to meet the basic needs of their children. Our missionaries in Argentina do the same. It actually doesn’t take a dollar for a meal to feed a child. But it is difficult when budget is tight and when they have to feed hundreds of children every day. (Continued)

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 26, 2020

God has blessed us in our lives and we in turn are invited to bless the lives of people around us. 9. You may never see the faces of people or hear their voices, but they may have found a future be- cause of your love and generosity. Finally I want to express my gratitude to you for being a blessing and whatever gift you are able to offer, please know that it will make a difference in someone’s life somewhere in some corner of the world.
