THE FEDERAL COUNCIL HAS FOUND IT NECESSARY TO INCREASE THE FULL MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTION TO $125.00 FROM 1 JANUARY 2017 AS RESULT OF INCREASING COSTS. THE SOCIETY HAS NOT HAD A RISE IN FEES FOR OVER 10 YEARS AND STILL REMAINS ONE OF THE LOWEST BREED SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP FEES. WE TRUST YOU WILL UNDERSTAND AND CONTINUE TO SUPPORT US.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Greetings 2016 Royal Show Results – fellow members and supporters of Judge Mr Dion Brook, Eloora our Beef Shorthorn Society. As Christmas quickly approaches, I wish you all the season’s greetings. We have been fortunate to have had very Beef Shorthorn good rain fall and seasonal conditions over the past 6 Grand Champion Bull – Roly Park Limbo months, plentiful grass supplies in our paddocks for feed and the opportunity to cut grass and replenish our Grand Champion Female – Roly Park Lassie reserves of bailed hay to fill empty hay sheds. All is well for feed supply in 2017. As you travel around, look well up in condition; this combined with good market prices for stock makes for a happy farmer!

Thanks to all members who have supported the Royal Melbourne show and many regional shows. Beef Shorthorns were the Feature Breed at the 2016 , thanks for your great support from members.

Congratulations to David Ashley and Grandchildren on their continued success at many shows in year. Australian Shorthorn Details surrounding our Society’s involvement in the Grand Champion Bull – Roly Park Live Wire Thousand Guineas Shorthorn brand of beef have been well communicated in our last newsletter. This initiative Grand Champion Female – Roly Park Miss Australia is of great importance to our breed and indeed our members and Certified Suppliers. I encourage you all to get behind this program. If you would like any further detail or have any questions, please contact our Secretary.

I thank fellow councillors for their support and indeed our Federal Secretary and Federal Treasurer for their huge efforts this year.

Best wishes, Bill Harwood, President The Norman Hotel in Brisbane each year holds a competition where the public votes for their favourite steak. Four breeds are invited to enter – they were Santa Gertrudis, Brahman, Hereford and Shorthorn. It is run over the month of October. This year JBS entered product from their Shorthorn brand. The good news is that Thousand Guineas won this year’s competition.

Product from each breed met a common specification for days on feed, carcass weight and ageing regime, whilst diners judged their steaks based on industry standard variables including tenderness, juiciness, flavour and overall liking. Diners were also served the same cut from each of the four breeds; rib eye fillets.

Executive Chef at The Norman Hotel, Mr. Frank Correnti, said that in addition to winning the competition, diners comments on the competition entry forms were extremely positive. Product is available for viewing in a chilled glass display cabinet in the restaurant with Thousand Guineas standing out for its marbling, meat colour and general appearance. “It just looks appealing”, Mr. Correnti said.

The award is the second for the young thousand Guineas brand in the past few months, after Thousand Guineas was also awarded a Silver Medal at the recent 2016 Fine Foods awards. Internationally, Shorthorn product was also awarded 2 Gold medals in the 2016 World Steak Challenge, held in London’s Hyde Park.

The Ballarat A & P Society celebrated its 150th Annual Show on the weekend of 11-13 November. The Society was honoured to be asked to participate as the Feature Breed. We undertook to provide 30 Beef and Australian Shorthorns, and we fulfilled that bargain. Nine exhibitors brought forward 33 cattle, Scott Bruton doing a fantastic job in bringing 18 of them.

In all, between 90 and 100 cattle were exhibited, other breeds represented being Poll Hereford, Santa Gertrudis, Simmental, Charolais, Limousin, , Poll Highland and Lowline. Spencer Family also brought three terrific Shorthorns.

The Beef and Australian Shorthorns shone brightly.

On the Friday evening, Brandon Sykes, ‘Mawarra Herefords’ judged ‘classics’ for bulls and heifers under 20 months. Eighteen bulls and 30 females were paraded. David Ashley & Grandchildren’s 18 months’ of age Morningtime Nara was adjudged Grand Champion bull. Scott Bruton’s Roly Park Megawhatt won a strong under12 months’ class.

In the females, Spencer Family’s Shorthorn, Spencer Family Lenny, was Grand Champion.

Saturday was wet and windy, but enthusiasm was high. Renowned Angus breeder, Graeme Collins, judged our cattle.

Junior and Champion bull was Morningtime Nara. Reserve was Roly Park Limbo.

The champions aside, there were a number of very promising young bulls. To this observer’s eye, they included and Scott Bruton’s Roly Park Megawhatt, and Les & Carolyn Shannon’s Glenmount Belmont.

In the females, Les and Carolyn Shannon’s 21 months’ of age in-calf heifer, Glenmount Chantilly Lace was the Grand Champion. She relegated the Junior Champion, Morningtime Kiribati’s Blossom 2. Reserve to the Senior Champion was Roly Park Lucy, and Junior Reserve was Margaret Hallyburton’s Rhyola Melody Gemma, with whom the judge was much impressed.

In the group classes, Carolyn and Les Shannon captured first prize for a pair of bulls under 20 months, Scott Bruton’s pair of heifers took first prize, and Morningtime’s group of three took top billing.

Then came the interbreed. Against stiff competition, Morningtime Nara triumphed. Chantilly Lace had to compete against cows with calves. That is always difficult, and so it proved on this occasion. The interbreed female champion was a black Limousin with calf at foot. Continuing success came in the form of the interbreed group of three, the winner being Spencer Family’s Australian Shorthorns.

The breed again had success when Morningtime Nara became the Supreme Beef breeds exhibit. This was the second time in seven days that he had been adjudged supreme exhibit– having been so adjudged at the large Whittlesea Show on the previous Sunday.

Capping a great day, Scott Bruton was awarded the A E Wemyss Trophy for the most successful exhibitor of all beef breeds – Clear it is that our cattle measure up!
