News From.... Behind The RedCurtain Dear Members and Patrons, Fall 2007 Dear Members and Patrons, After a summer highlighted with lots of local talent and the biggest show the Savoy has ever seen, we’re pleased to launch our fall line-up. It’s jam packed with a wide variety of entertainment – comedians, dance shows, classical music and talented musicians. Classic Albums Live is back with three performances over the coming year, and Robert Munsch will be making a stop here to share story time with children. But before we look ahead to the fall, I’d like to share with you some of the highlights of the summer.

On July 14th, The White Stripes played to a sold out crowd at the Savoy, celebrating 10 years together as a band. Distant cousin Ashley MacIsaac proved to be a fantastic opening act. His duet with Buddy MacMaster at the end of his set made for an unforgettable moment, and bringing the crowd to their feet with thunderous ap- plause. That was until The White Stripes hit the stage. The crowd got on their feet and danced and cheered for almost two and a half hours as the Detroit duo rocked the place. We received media coverage for 5 days straight and will be featured on their 10th anniversary DVD, coming out in time for Christmas. Those in attendance were members of Jack White’s family, record executives, journalists from many local newspapers and websites, including Rolling Stone magazine, prominent musicians, and of course – lots and lots of die hard fans from all over the world. And the best part? All night, our staff received comments and compliments about the beauty and hospitality of the theatre. Many said they can’t wait to come back and catch another show here.

Our summer fundraisers were a tremendous amount of work, but very worth it in the end. The Price is Right raised about $2200. The ‘Sit Back and Relax’ chair auction brought in approximately $9,000 and Battle of the Bands almost $5300. A big thank you to all who supported us in any way over the summer months.

The pages of this newsletter contains lots of information about our fall line-up. We have some artists that you may not have heard of before, but are definitely worth the price of admission once you learn more about them. For instance, Michael Kaeshammer is a young jazz pianist who is developing quite a following as he tours Can- ada and the US. Brian Byrne is the former singer of the popular band I Mother Earth. And we also have some of your favourites, like The Three Pianos and Christmas Mania, back for more shows here at the Savoy Theatre.

We’re also working on a few surprise shows that will be announced as soon as the ink hits the paper.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, comments or concerns or if you’d like more informa- tion on our upcoming artists. The administration line at the Savoy is 902.842.1599. We’d be pleased to fill you in. Also, be sure check out our website – www.savoytheatre.com – and see what’s in store for you this season, behind the red curtain…

...WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION Classic Albums Live (CAL) is back, and if you haven’t seen them yet, this is your chance. They’ve been here before, and now they’re back to perform three classic abums: Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors and The Beatles’ Abbey Road.. For those who aren’t familiar with CAL, it started four years ago from an idea creator Craig Martin had while on the road with his Rolling Stones tribute band:

‘The radio was playing a song from the Stones album Exile on Main Street, and I had an idea to just cover songs from that album,’ says Martin. ‘By the time I reached my destination, I had decided that we should forget the tribute band and just concentrate on the music – I mean, these albums that we cover, the musicians are the Mozart and Bachs of our time.’

The company has grown leaps and bounds, and is catching the attention of people all over the world. They per- form weekly shows in Las Vegas, recreating albums from artists like Pink Floyd, The Beatles and and many more. The most important thing to remember is that Classic Albums Live is not a tribute band. There are no impersonations, no cheesy wigs or costumes; nobody gets to ‘be’ the frontman for these legendary bands. They re-create the album, literally – note for note and cut for cut.

Ask anyone who’s seen them at the Savoy before – their shows are excellent. In fact, many fi rst-timers line up at intermission to purchase tickets for the next CAL performance. And those who’ve seen them – well, they already have their tickets! What’s Your Story? As many of you know, the Savoy Theatre is a non profit organziation that costs about $1 million to maintain annually. We receive about $100, 000 from government agencies,. so the rest of the money has to be made up through box office revenue and fundraising initiatives.

So, we’d like to know your story! Did you perform here as a kid? Are you a regular patron? Do you have fond memories of the Savoy? If you have a special connection to the Savoy and want to help out, please call us and let us know. We’re always looking for volunteers to help spread the word about our shows and fundraisers. It could be as simple as forwarding our emails or distributing our print materials to friends, family and associates. Word of mouth is our best form of advertisement.

If you’d like to make a monetary donation, ask about our membership options. We have a great list of incentives as a way to say thank you for your support! And if you’re already a member, a sincere thank you. We appreciate your patronage and your interest in our theatre. Feel free to call our office at 842-1599 and ask for Donald or myself, Katherine, if you have any comments, questions or concerns. COMING ATTRACTIONS....
