Dear Friends and Neighbors,

2016 proved to be another remarkable year for your Community Foundation! We engaged our community in new and exciting ways; we celebrated our 20th anniversary as a county-wide organization; and we made effective grants to a variety of philanthropic causes in our commu- nity. Thank you to the donors who made our successful year possible.

As part of our strategic plan, in 2016 the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors em- barked on a complete review of our governing documents, including our mission and vision

DONOR LETTER statements, bylaws and other documents, as well as refreshing our logo, website and brand- ing. You can read of some of those changes in this report, while our governing documents can be found at our new website at www.hendrickscountycf.org.

The Board adopted a bold new vision statement that will guide our work moving forward WILLIAM A. – Hendricks County is a vibrant, giving community – as well as a new mission statement that RHODEHAMEL better describes our role in the community – The Hendricks County Community Foundation Executive Director partners with generous people to realize their charitable goals while addressing community needs in meaningful and lasting ways. We feel these refreshed statements add clarity to our work as we continue to create a positive impact in Hendricks County.

At the end of March, we completed our Lilly Endowment GIFT VI campaign. We raised over $1.5 million from generous people in our community for a total impact of over $3 million. Many of these donations started or added to Legacy Funds – unrestricted funds that will ben- efit our community for generations to come. We are indebted to Lilly Endowment for their challenge grant and very grateful for all the generous people in Hendricks County and beyond. Thank you!

Our unrestricted grantmaking for 2016 focused on partnering with our local nonprofits to build their institutional capacity. This played out in many exciting ways, including our monthly Nonprofit Learning Series, professional development and other capacity building grants, and our exciting new event Get Involved. You’ll find more information on this program inside this report. RHONDA This past year, with contributions from generous donors and grant dollars from our endowed WILES funds, the Board approved grants and scholarships totaling over $865,000 benefiting a wide Board President variety of projects and nonprofits serving many Hendricks County citizens. The projects and programs supported by our grantmaking included a wide range of activities touching almost every area of our community. Programs in the arts, community enhancement, education, health & human services, parks & recreation, and youth all received broad support.

The success of the past year reminds us of all we can accomplish together. With your help, our Board and staff are committed to moving the Hendricks County Community Foundation forward so that we can realize our vision of Hendricks County as a vibrant, giving community.

It is a great time to make an impact in your community by making a gift to an existing fund or establishing a new one! As indicated by our new mission statement, HCCF can help you extend the impact of your charitable giving and realize your goals for giving back. Contact a member of our Board or staff for information on how to make your charitable dreams come true! We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours in philanthropy,

ANNUAL REPORT 5 Show Love For

THE RATHS Where You Live

Hendricks County lost a great friend last year when Fred Raths of Avon passed away on June 11, 2016. With his passing at age 87, our community lost a humble and anonymous benefactor. He and his late wife Bonnie, who died in 2007, had an incredible impact on our community through the anonymous grants they made from the Raths Family Fund, which they established in 1999 at the Community Foundation.

Fred was born October 31, 1928, in Quincy, Illinois, to John and Mary Ellen Raths, immigrants from Switzerland. Fred graduated from Quin- cy High School in 1946 and studied at the University of Illinois, grad- uating with a Bachelors in Chemistry in 1950. At the University of Illi- nois, he met the love of his life, Bonnie Puls Raths, and they married in 1951. Soon after, he and Bonnie moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where Fred continued his education obtaining his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Organic Chemistry from the University of Iowa. After graduation, Fred began work as a research chemist for Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan. In 1958, he moved his young family to Memphis, Tennes- see, to start work at Buckman Laboratories. Fred worked for Buckman Laboratories for 31 years before retiring in 1989 as Vice President of Operations.

In 1997, Fred and Bonnie moved to Avon to be closer to their son Rich- ard and his family. They were always active as volunteers and enjoyed serving the community together. Fred delivered meals for Meals on Wheels to the elderly and handicapped, and they were members of Messiah Lutheran Church in Brownsburg as well as Kingsway Chris- tian Church in Avon.

Deedee Daniel, the first Executive Director of HCCF, remembers when Fred and Bonnie stopped in to her office in Plainfield. Deedee recalls their first meeting, “I usually worked with people that I already knew in the community, but it was different with the Raths. They just walked in the door and said, ‘We’d like to talk with you about the Community Foundation.’” Fred told her the reason behind their visit, “Bonnie and I “Bonnie and I believe very strongly we need to give back where we’re living.”

believe very “They didn’t really know what they wanted to do with their giving in Hendricks County,” Deedee said, “which is why they came to the Com- strongly we need munity Foundation.” They found a perfect fit in a donor advised fund, which offers power and flexibility to the donor while accessing the deep expertise of HCCF. Donor advised funds also provide the op- to give back portunity to involve other family members in the grantmaking deci- sion process. “Once the fund was established, Fred and Bonnie would where we’re living.” gather with their children and grandchildren at Christmas to go over grant applications and decide where the grant money would go.”

6 HENDRICKS COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Fred and Bonnie made all their grants from the Raths Family Fund anonymously to support a variety of causes close to their hearts. They wanted to support organiza- THE RATHS tions and projects primarily in Hendricks County, but not to the exclusion of worth- while projects that may reach outside of the county. They desired to fund program- ming that helps people in need, improves health and wellness, supports community enhancement, and projects that affect the largest groups of people. Fred also pro- vided a substantial gift during the recent GIFT VI campaign for HCCF to use as a challenge grant to encourage new gifts to unrestricted funds.

Fred and Bonnie partnered with HCCF to extend their impact because of our grant- making expertise and knowledge of our community, while also trusting us to main- tain their anonymity. Fred and Bonnie’s children graciously consented to publish- ing this tribute.

In an interview in July 2014, Fred explained that they also started the fund because of the lasting quality of endowed funds at the Community Foundation. “A permanent fund means we can give back to our community every year while preserving our original investment.”

A permanent donor advised fund like the Raths Family Fund will for- ever be part of positive change in Hendricks County. Even without “A permanent fund any additional gifts, the Raths Family Fund will continue to offer sub- stantial grants every year to charitable programming. After about 25 means we can give back years, more will have been granted from the fund than was originally gifted to the Community Foundation, and the principal of the fund will to our community every continue forever. As Deedee put it recently, “To me, the Raths Fund is the epitome of year while preserving somebody saying, ‘Wherever we live, we’re going to be part of the community, and we’re giving back.’ Fred and Bonnie were devoted our original investment.” community servants, caring neighbors, and a great team.”

William Rhodehamel, HCCF’s current Executive Director, never met Bonnie, but he came to know Fred well over the last four years of his life. “I’d take him to lunch and we’d talk for two or three hours about different projects and how his grantmaking could lead to better outcomes for our community. He was sharp as a tack and focused on where he could make a difference. Fred was remarkable. He never wanted recognition for his giving or grantmaking. His generosity humbled me.”

Fred and Bonnie are survived by their son and daughter and their spouses, Richard and Carmen Raths, and Susan and Scott Hooper, and four grandchildren: Bradford, Jeremy, Sarah and Meredith. As Fred’s obituary stated, “Fred was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. He was very proud of his Swiss heritage and never forgot his family roots. His profound impact – on the community in which he lived and on the lives of his family and friends – will be dearly missed and forever remembered with much love and gratitude.”

With Fred and Bonnie’s gifts, HCCF will be able to preserve and grow their legacy, ensuring that their contributions to our community will continue forever.

10 HENDRICKS COUNTY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OPERATION ROUND-UP Big Impact Made with Common Cents

You might wonder, “What kind of impact could $12 have in our community?” The Operation Round-Up Fund, established by Hendricks Power Cooperative in 1999, is an example of how small drops can make big ripples. When Hendricks Power members choose to round up their monthly bill to the nearest dollar, no more than $12 per year, their “drops” add up to big im- pact in Hendricks County.

“It is amazing how these small individual donations have added up over the past 17 years,” said Dana Cochran, Marketing VP at Hendricks Power. Since the Operation Round-Up Fund was established, almost $121,000 has been raised from gifts smaller than $12. And these gifts have

Hendricks Power grant to Misty Eyes Animal Shelter led to nearly $119,000 in grants to 57 projects in Hendricks County. for building campaign. “Operation Round-Up is a valuable program in our community,” said William Rhodehamel, HCCF Executive Director. “In 2016, Operation Round-Up made $6,000 in grants to organizations like Susie’s Place for law enforcement interview equipment and Misty Eyes Animal Shelter for their building campaign. Operation Round-Up has been serving the community with us for 17 years, and together we have helped complete numerous proj- ects for the community and local nonprofit organizations.” Although Operation Round-Up prioritizes grants related to utility issues, grants have ranged from pediatric recitation equipment for our community’s first responders to building Avon’s World War II Memorial Park.

The success of Operation Round-Up has all been accomplished with about 2,000 of Hendricks Power’s 30,000 members opting in and rounding up their bills. If every member opted in to the program, Operation Round-Up would generate over $180,000 each year for community grantmaking.

Partnerships with companies like Hendricks Power Cooperative are valuable to the company, the Community Foundation and to our community. HCCF partners with a variety of local companies in different ways to make positive impact on the lives of people in Hendricks County. Not only do these partnerships expand what HCCF can achieve each year, but they also benefit the company by showing their dedication to their community while gaining valuable insight and expertise from the Community Foundation’s staff. HCCF welcomes the community to also make smaller monthly donations to any of our 200 funds. Small amounts add up to a big impact! Hendricks Power grant to Brownsburg Fire Territory for training equipment. “The past 17 years have been a remarkable partnership with Hendricks Power, its members and the Community Foundation,” said William. “Hendricks Power as fund representative, Corporate Partner, and community servant clearly shares our vision of a vibrant, giving Hendricks County.”

GET INVOLVED Community

There’s no place like home! Growing up in a great community like Hendricks County inspires dedication and connectivity unlike any other place. However, choosing the best way to give back to your community can be difficult no matter where you live. Finding a volunteer opportunity that fits not only your passions and personality, but also your schedule, can be a frustrating and time-consuming task. Wouldn’t it be easier to have a one-stop-shop to meet and learn about all the nonprofits in need of volunteers in Hendricks County?

Get Involved is a volunteer job fair with the goal of connecting nonprofit organizations to community members who want to give back.

ANNUAL REPORT 15 Strategic Grants for Effective Nonprofits LOCAL NONPROFITS

When local nonprofits need professional development often they must drive to and pay for classes. Not any more, thanks to your Community Foundation’s new grantmaking program. This strategic shift in our unrestricted grantmaking is due to the donor-centric shift in our mission statement.

To best serve donors, not just those of HCCF but all donors in Hen- dricks County, HCCF chose to focus its unrestricted grantmaking on nonprofit capacity building. Generally defined as strengthening man- “This type of funding agement systems and governance, capacity building grants recognize that organizations need to build effective management, governance, is needed very badly marketing and sustainability as well as programs. in the nonprofit sector. Thank you.” - JAMESON CAMP - - NPLS ATTENDEE - Carol Battistini, Executive Director of the Hendricks County Humane Society, first became involved with the Community Foundation three years ago by attending an HCCF-hosted workshop for nonprofit board members. Carol said, “As a newcomer to nonprofit boards and fundraising, I found the HCCF team to be an awesome resource. I quickly learned that they are dedicated to helping nonprofits pursue their missions, and their positive energy is contagious! Bringing together nonprofits via workshops and events creates natural networking and sharing of ideas that ultimately helps the organizations better serve our residents. HCCF truly demonstrates the adage of a rising tide lifts all boats. As Executive Director of the Humane Society, I can attest to the benefits HCCF has brought to our organization, and I am proud to personally support the Community Foundation.”
