The majority appeared to have been Roman road metalling, with isolated deposits of colluvium and possibly Roman soil horizons. Small quantities of residual artefacts were present in previously disturbed backfill deposits, but none were retained. Archaeological Monitoring During Redevelopment Work Watkins, K Bath : Bath Archaeological Trust, 2005, 13pp, colour pls, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Bath Archaeological Trust The excavation of service trenches revealed several phases of early activity on the site. Disturbance of the natural underlying gravels during the Romano-British period and evidence of burning was interpreted as a possible phase of scrub clearance followed by agricultural use. During the early medieval period a large pit was dug at the north-eastern end of the site. This may have been in order to quarry gravel, or simply as a rubbish pit. It was then used for the dumping of domestic waste between the 11th and 13th century. The later medieval deposits had been truncated by the 18th and 19th century development of the site. An Archaeological Watching Brief Slator, J Gillingham : Context One Archaeological Services, 2005, 18pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Context One Archaeological Services Excavation of Trenches 2 and 3 revealed a layer of sub-rectangular stone cobbles, which undoubtedly related to the original cobbled surface of the central area of the Circus. Excavation in trench 1 revealed no evidence of the cobbled surface and was supplanted, instead, by a modern layer of domestic dumping. Three bone fragments, three clay pipe fragments, one glass shard and two whiteware sherds contained within this layer additionally reflected a typical pattern of domestic refuse dumping. Report on an Archaeological Watching Brief Lewcun, M Bath : Bath Archaeology , 2005, 6pp, figs Work undertaken by: Bath Archaeology The excavation revealed a broad ditch, containing pottery of early medieval date, running just above the deep combe to the south-west.
