Small fl an, Good Extremely Fine with delightful dark iridescent toning.

The nautical motifs of the imperatorial Pompeian coinages issued by Sextus Pompey and Gnaeus Pompey Junior refl ect their faction as a naval force to be reckoned with. The brothers’ occupation of Sicily allowed them to block- ade Mediterranean trade routes to Rome - starving the capitol of grain, causing famine in the city. This denarius depicts Neptune in superb artistic style, the god crucial to Sextus Pompey’s naval campaigns. The reverse shows an impressive naval trophy, possibly celebrating recent naval victories, or paying homage to the late Pompey the Great. The Pompeian coinage was struck out of a need to pay their naval forces, so it made perfect sense for them to use familiar nautical imagery. The brothers’ dominance in the region would come to an end in the year of this coin’s issue. They were defeated at the Batt le of Naulochus in September of 36 BC by Agrippa and would never again trouble Octavian and Antony. This spectacular denarius survives in Extremely Fine condition, with a beautiful purple cabinet toning.

Hadrian advancing right in front of three soldiers, each carrying a standard, DISCIPLINA AVG. (C 540; BMC 602; RIC 232; Calicó 1251 (these dies)). Very Rare. About Extremely Fine.

This very rare gold aureus of Hadrian refl ects the emperor’s strong, but often overlooked belief in the Disciplina Militaris (The discipline of the Roman Army). Hadrian believed the army should be kept busy, as well as being ruled strictly and frugally. Hadrian was no hypocrite when it came to these opinions. On his travels around the empire he impressed the army by living just like them, sleeping rough and eating the same rations as the soldiers, in stark contrast to the common opinion of Hadrian as a high-minded, cultured traveller of the classical world.

Hadrian pushed the ideals of frugality, sternness and faithfulness (the virtues of the Goddess Disciplina) onto his army, and many soldiers worshipped the minor deity. The cavalry base at Cilumum on the Tyne, close to Hadri- an’s Wall, was dedicated to Disciplina.

This coin shows in detail Hadrian’s role as a leader of disciplined soldiers. He appears slightly taller than the three legionaries, who follow him, each holding a military standard. Hadrian is shown leading from the front and coins of this type would surely have been popular with his army, busy at work on the frontiers.

Commodus’ reign saw victories in Scotland over Pictish tribes by the Roman Army, under the command of Ulpius Marcellus in 184/5 AD. A barbarian invasion in the lands across Hadrian’s Wall some years earlier had caused death and destruction – even a Roman governor was slain. Ulpius’ campaign was vengeful one, and victories were celebrated with the striking of this extremely rare brass sestertius. For the fi rst time, Britannia is depicted standing upright, holding her trademark helmet and a sword, rather than the traditional trident with which she is now associated. Very few examples of this excessively rare type have appeared on the market.

[email protected] baldwin’s 17 The Name for Numismatics Coins o the ong Caesars

Being the son of a Roman Emperor during Third Century AD was unfortunate, to say the least. As an emper- or ascended to the throne (almost always thanks to the military) he would often elevate his young son to the position of Caesar, as a potential heir or to please the Roman people. Unfortunately during the Third Century, the Roman Army had a habit of murdering their new emperors after a year or two. The three silver denarii presented here are a reminder of this dark period of Roman history and are all extremely fi ne examples of the scarce young Caesars.

iadmenian (217-218 AD) AR Denarius 3.10gm., Rome. Laureate head of Diadumenian facing right, M OPEL ANT DIADVMENIAN CAES. Rev. Prince standing right, between three military standards, PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS. (RIC 102). Rare. Lustrous. Good Extremely Fine.

Macrinus’ short-lived reign followed the assassination of the Severan ruler Caracalla. His son, Diadumenian, was made Caesar at only nine years of age. He was even promoted to co-emperor the following year. Unfortunately a resurgence of the Severan Dynasty resulted in the pair being murdered while fl eeing to Parthia, by supporters of Elagabalus in June 218 AD.

Maims (236-237 AD) AR Denarius 2.79gm., Rome. Bare head of Maximus facing right, MAXIMVS CAES GERM. Rev. Prince standing left beside two military standards, PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS. (RIC 5; RSC 10; BMC 211). Scarce. About Extremely Fine, reverse somewhat weakly struck.

Severus Alexander’s murder at the hands of Maximinus Thrax is traditionally seen as the start of the Crisis of the Third Century. Maximus was the son of Maximinus Thrax, the cruel military emperor who was becoming despised by other Roman factions as well as the Roman Senate. The young Maximus was made Caesar in 236 AD but only lasted two years and along with his father and mother, was murdered by the Praetorian Guard.

ordian (as Caesar, 238 AD) AR Denarius 2.80gm., Rome. Bareheaded bust of Gordian III facing right, M ANT GORDIANVS CAES. Rev. Priestly implements, PIETAS AVGG. (RIC I; RSC 182). Rare. Extremely Fine.

The Year of the Six Emperors saw the defeat of Maximinus Thrax by Pupienus and Balbinus. The joint reign of the two ex-senators was somewhat disastrous. Having defeated the popular Gordian I and II in Africa, the pair made Gordian I’s grandson Caesar, to please the Roman people. Denarii were issued which feature a young bareheaded portrait, in contrast to the later, more mature profi les. Gordian III was a teenager and survived the purge of the Praetorian Guard, who grew tired of Pupienus and Balbinus’ continuous infi ghting. Gordian III became sole emperor and ruled for a further six years – not bad for a young emperor in the Third Century. He was, however, murdered by his own troops in 244 AD – an all too familiar end. Impressive double sestertii were introduced during the reign of Trajan Decius – a time when the base metal coins of the Roman Empire were seeing far less use than in earlier decades. Diff erentiated by the emperor’s radiate crown and weighing upwards of 40 grams, the double sestertius was the largest coin struck in the history of the Roman Empire. Master engravers seem to have taken advantage of the large fl an size. Today, nice examples are rare. The detail on this piece, particularly the emperor’s cuirass, is excellent.

A spectacular anepigraphic depiction of Constantine the Great in gold. Struck later in the emperor’s reign, around 326–330 AD, Constantine is depicted gazing upwards, possibly towards God. By this point Constantine had converted and Christianity was thriving in the Roman Empire. The two wreaths which appear on this coin’s re- verse refer to two decades of rule successfully completed – the Emperor’s vicennalia; something only a handful of emperors had achieved before him.

Such fi ne work pieces were produced on two occasions in 1651 and 1656, presumably in direct competition to the eff orts of Blondeau’s new milled machinery, which threatened to put the hammered coin workers out of commis- sion. Therefore our theory is the hammered workers produced these ‘best eff ort’ pieces to have compared to those produced on the milled presses. It would seem the work of these skilled craftsmen was more than adequate, as the advent of milled coinage did not commence on a permanent basis until after the Restoration of Charles II in 1662.

In eff ect, the fi rst golden guinea, which initially would also be valued at 20 shillings. Most of Cromwell’s coinage bears the date 1658, earlier issues generally being far rarer. Challis (on page 330, A New History of the Royal Mint) provides a fascinating glimpse at the moment when this truly modern coin was created. The well-known story of the Frenchman Pierre Blondeau’s failure to be engaged by the Royal Mint, just as the transition from hammering the coinage occurred, ended with great success when his brilliant minting innovations were combined with the artistic of the mint’s chief engraver, Thomas Simon, who in 1656 had just completed his portrait of the Lord Protector for the coinage. At fi rst hesitant, the Royal Mint provided Blondeau with meagre funds as well as a facility that was not within the mint’s headquarters at the Tower. His fi rst coins, those dated 1656, were minted in 1657 at Worcester House and then at Drury House. In November, however, ‘the government had in fact seen from Blondeau’s initial eff orts that in practice he could do exactly what all along he had claimed’, and only then was funding advanced to him so that the coinage manufactory could move to the Royal Mint in 1658. Challis sums up this brilliant minting experiment as follows: ‘On 3 September 1658 Oliver Cromwell died but before he did so Blondeau had time to produce a second, and more plentiful, issue of his most beautiful coins’. None is more stunning than his golden 20-shillings coin of this year.
