Stewardship Reflection catholicsteward.com, used with permission Today’s readings challenge us to focus on the “why” of stewardship. Why embrace this Important Youth Ministry challenging way of life when it seems hard enough just to pay the bills, take care of Dates our loved ones, meet the demands of our jobs and fall into bed at the end of each full High School National Catholic day? Because this life is not all there is. We were made for more — for eternal Youth Conference (NCYC) happiness in union with God. While we cannot earn our way into Heaven, what we November 21-24 do now with the life God has given us has eternal consequences. Stewardship living Middle School Lock-in helps us to keep focused on our hoped-for destination in the choices we make each December 13 day. Our first reading, from the Second Book of Maccabees, gives an inspiring example of people committed to living for God and striving for eternal happiness with Him. This passage revolves around seven brothers and their mother who were being tortured for Parish Save the Date refusing to eat pork in violation of God’s law. They accepted the torture even to the point of death. This courage was, of course, not about the pork! Thanksgiving Day Mass Thursday, November 28, 9:00 AM It was about love. It was about their awareness that their lives were a gift from God, and it was their grateful response in choosing to live for Him above all else, even if Immaculate Conception of the obedience to His laws meant Blessed Virgin Mary suffering and death. In fact, as one Monday, December 9, 5:30 PM brother was told to put out his Communal Reconciliation tongue (no doubt for some cruel Service purpose), he offered not only his Saturday, December 14 tongue but his hands, as well, saying, Christmas Masses “It was from Heaven that I received December 24, 4:00 & 8:00 PM these; for the sake of his laws I December 25, 9:00 AM disdain them; from him I hope to Solemnity of Mary, Mother of receive them again.” That is God, vigil service commitment to one’s convictions. December 31, 5:30 PM Stewardship is not ultimately about Soup & Trivia Night the particular amount or kind of Saturday, January 25 time, talent and treasure that we offer. It is about the conviction that Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner everything we have is a gift from our Sunday, February 16 loving God, Whom we can never truly repay, and with Whom we want to live forever. Revisiting these three aspects of our lives on a regular basis, prayerfully discerning the best use of our gifts, and putting this down in writing clarifies and strengthens our conviction to put God first. It is a clear guide and a powerful aid in living out this conviction in concrete ways day by day. All Saints Parish App To borrow the words from St. Paul to the Thessalonians in our second reading, our stewardship commitments help us “direct [our] heart to the love of God and to the Search “All Saints Cedar Rapids” in endurance of Christ.” either the App Store or Google Play and get the All Saints App for smart In our Gospel passage from Luke, Christ reminds us very clearly that we were made phones and tablets! for more than just this life, and that our choices in this life have eternal consequences. In this passage, our Lord corrects some Sadducees for their mistaken notion that there Notifications on events is no resurrection. He instructs that “those who are deemed worthy to attain to the Prayer resources coming age and to the resurrection of the dead… can no longer die, for they are like Weekend homilies angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise…” And so much more! Why should we embrace the stewardship way of life? So that we will use this life to thank God for all His gifts to us and so that we may attain the gift of eternal life and everlasting happiness of Heaven with Him.

James Thebeau Why not say, “Whatever you do to others…?” This would include all whom we Teel Thebeau (sub req.) serve. But instead Jesus pointed to the least brother. Perhaps this should be seen, Millie Wendt especially, as the most sinful person, the weakest, the most gravely ill, the Jenny Tursi incapacitated, the hungry and the homeless, and all those who have pronounced needs Altar Servers Evi Kettelkamp in this life. Elsa Kettelkamp The most beautiful and touching part about this statement is that Jesus identifies Ellie Stephenson (sub req.) By serving those in special need, Nicole Johnson we are serving Jesus. But for Him to be able to say that, He has to be intimately Altar Servers united with these people. And by showing such an intimate connection to them, Jesus Ellie Evers reveals their infinite dignity as persons. Cooper Schenck This is such an important point to grasp! In fact, this has been a central theme in the Carson Schenck Maggie Brennan constant teachings of St. John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and especially Pope Francis. Preston Haefner An invitation to constant focus upon the dignity and value of the person must be the Lectors central message we take from this passage. Matt Brandes Reflect, today, upon the dignity of each and every person. Try to call to mind anyone Mick Erdman you may fail to look at with perfect respect. Who is it you look down upon and roll Hospitality Ministers your eyes at? Who is it you judge or disdain? It is within this person, more than any Gary Zaugg Dorothy Zaugg other, that Jesus waits for you. He waits to meet you and to have you love Him in the Grace Zaugg weak and the sinner. Why I Support Our Teachers in Haiti Ministry Schedule By Jim Thebeau Saturday, November 23, 4:00 PM I was never much of a contributor to overseas social causes … Sacristan before January 2019. Cynthia Gunsolly, OFS Extraordinary Ministers There are all those non-government organizations and private Linda Vermeersch donors who took care of the hungry children, the immigrant Jack Conley holding camps and those unlawfully imprisoned in other Gary Anhalt countries, I reasoned. And besides, there was plenty of need locally. Corinne Miller Jack Cosgrove For years I traveled the world for my job and saw people living in poverty, as well as Aaron Kelly those living in comfort and luxury. LeElyn Metz As a temporary visitor to three other continents, I was just an observer. There was Joe Mischka Altar Servers nothing I, as an individual, could do to help, I reasoned. Grayce Conley But I didn’t ask how I could help. Claire Gladish Julian Gladish That is until I made a purposeful All Saints Lectors mission trip to Haiti in January to put my Terry Murrin faith into action and support for Father Joan Murrin Eddy and the teachers and children in our Hospitality Ministers sister parish. Mike Votroubek Fred Overmann To see the need first hand was life changing. Marlene Wilson But to see the impact of the resources Daniel Greene provided by you and the parishioners of St Tom Takes John’s in Mt.
