MUSTER ROLLS FOR COL. THOMAS POSEY’S BATTALION, JAN 1782 - MAY 1783 Transcribed and annotated by C. Leon Harris.

[After virtually the entire Virginia was captured at Charleston on 12 May 1780, Maj. Thomas Posey (BLWt1733-450) managed to recruit two small battalions by late in 1780. The battalions were to serve in the Carolinas under Gen. Nathanael Greene, but the British invasion of Virginia delayed their march to the South until after the surrender of Cornwallis on 19 Oct 1781. By the time Posey’s detachment arrived in the south in the spring of 1782 it comprised two companies from the 2nd Virginia Continental Regiment and one company each from the remaining seven Virginia Continental regiments. The only field officer besides Posey was apparently Major Samuel Finley (W10026). The Captains of these nine companies are listed below in the order in which their rolls occur in the present file, followed by the regiments from which they were detached. As the ranks were depleted by expiring enlistments, desertions, and deaths (mainly by disease), companies were consolidated until finally by May 1783 the only one left was that of Capt. Clough Shelton.

Before joining Greene’s Southern Army, Posey’s detachment joined Gen. ’s Pennsylvania troops at Ebenezer GA, where they helped keep the British bottled up in Savannah. After the British evacuated Savannah on 11 July 1782, Posey’s detachment joined Greene at Ashley Hill (just south of Middleton Place Plantation) to help keep the British confined in Charleston SC. The following time line shows some of the major events during the period when the above rosters were made. 1782 Apr 7 Col. Posey’s Battalion joins Gen. Anthony Wayne’s Pennsylvania troops at Ebenezer GA May 20 Wayne and Posey attacked by Loyalists under Lt Col Thomas Brown at Harris’s Bridge, Ogeechee Ferry GA May 24 Wayne and Posey attacked by Cherokees at Sharon GA June 23 At Ebenezer Wayne and Posey attacked by Loyalists under Creek Chief Emistisiguo July 11 Wayne and Posey enter Savannah as British evacuate July 15 About this date Posey leaves Savannah to join Greene at Ashley Hill in South Carolina Oct late Posey’s detachment returning to Virginia Dec 14 British evacuate Charleston

The transcribed rolls are from Fold3.com beginning at https://www.fold3.com/image/1/9647999. Full and alternative spellings of names, as well as the file numbers of pension and bounty-land applications, are added in brackets at the first occurrence of the name. Most names occur on more than one roster, sometimes in more than one company, and often with different spellings. Columns headed “Term of Inlistment” show the time remaining. The original tables have columns headed “Mustered,” which are omitted here because they merely repeat the soldiers’ names except those indicated by *. Columns headed “Time since last Mustered, or Inlisted” are omitted because they are either blank or have the same datum for each mustered soldier. In some of the rosters columns headed “Alteration Since Last Muster” are omitted when there are no entries or they add no new information.] Roll & Muster of a Company of the 8th Virginia Regim’t in a Battallion composed of the different Regiments of the Virginia Line commanded by Lt Colo Thos Posey Alterations Term of since last Rank Names Enterment Casualties Mustter Cpt Robt Gambell* Virginia Lieut Luke Cannon [S46373] Ens John Scott [S38354] Serg 1 James Healey 5 Month Serg 2 John Poor [S38314] 5 Ditto Serg 3 Wm Elexander [William Alexander] 5 Ditto Drum 1 Zach Holoday [Zacharias Holladay S31141] 5 Ditto fifer 1 Peter Jackson* War Deserted Cor 1 Wm Johnston [William Johnson W7932?] 5 Month On guard Cor 2 Everard Pullin [Everard Pullen W3451] 5 Ditto Private 1 George Peck 5 Ditto 2 John Edmonson 5 Ditto 3 Landon Key 5 Ditto 4 John McCray 6 Ditto 5 James Kelley 6 Ditto 6 John Clark* 5 Ditto Sick N Carolina 7 Joseph Jones 5 Ditto 8 Joseph Smith 5 Ditto 9 Wm Galley [William Galley] 5 Ditto 10 John France [W7327] 2 Years 11 Jacob Miller [W9569] 6 Months 12 Matthew Sheats 6 Ditto 13 John Fleming War 14 George Booker [S16054] 5 Months On guard 15 George Mitchell [W9574] 5 Ditto On guard 16 Peter Moor [Peter More VAS748] War 17 John Dayall Ditto On guard 18 Robt Boxell [Robert Boxwell S34658] 5 Months 19 Joseph Boxell [Joseph Boxwell S34659] 6 Ditto 20 John Bordell 5 Ditto 21 Peter Lonton 5 Ditto 22 Henry Lower War 23 Thomas Hutchins* Ditto Sick N Carolina 24 George Nipper 6 Month 25 John Lynes 2 Years Waiter 26 Volentine Ross [Valentine Ross S38335] War 27 Francis King Ditto Waiter 28 George Addams 5 Month Waiter 29 Antoney Cannon [?] Waiter I do certify the above Roll to be a true state I Certifie the above Muster to be true in all its Contents of the Company this 16th Ap’l 1782 Camp Inspection of the 1st of April 1782 Luke Cannon Lt J Steel [John Steele R10072.5] Capt 1st P.
