ADVIISIING AND RELATED STUDENT SERVIICES: University of Texas at Austin Spring 2018 ASL 357 Pedagogy Classes In this undergraduate experience, the student works closely with an ASL Lecturer with the goal of developing robust methods for adult acquisition of ASL. Previous students of ASL have the unique perspective of having developed fluency in a signed language via classroom instruction and activities. This ASL 357 course leverages the experience and skills of the student to enhance their language learning and provide continued curriculum development for the ASL Program. The student will provide input about in-class activities, lessons, and out-of-class learning experiences. The student will also assist, as appropriate, in the classroom under the direction of the ASL Lecturer who is directing the experience. An overarching goal of the ASL pedagogy experience is to provide the student with knowledge about L2 acquisition of ASL.

University of Texas at Austin January - May 2008 LIN 379 Conference Course in Linguistics, ASL Independent Study

This independent study course was designed by a student who aspired to expand her conversational skills in ASL Literature in order to increase her knowledge and preparation for her Deaf Education/Deaf Studies major. The goals were to further refine competence in and performance of all grammatical features as they relate to ASL Literature. Language activities and cross-cultural discussions were a part of the course. The student completed a portfolio of her work, which included ASL storytelling, poetry performance, fictional stories, research on an ASL literature genre, and developing a project that corresponded to a film by Deaf filmmakers. Her studies assisted her in improving her knowledge and foundation for linguistic aspects of ASL, storytelling--specifically the use of role-shifting & classifiers, stories about current events and strategic interactions. The final grade was based on three criteria: evaluation of performance by the lecturer, attendance of weekly meetings, correspondence with lecturer, and completion and evaluation of project goals and missions.

University of Texas at Austin August 2006 Lin 357 Undergraduate Research Course Advisor This independent study course was a joint effort by two students who assisted in the beginning research phases of a long-term project that ultimately developed a new health education curriculum for students in the deaf education setting. The students conducted research about cultural differences in health education, vocabulary/concepts, collected materials from different health education programs, and researched differences in language used to discuss health education. The final grade was based on three criteria: evaluation of performance by lecturer, attendance of weekly meetings and correspondence with lecturer, and completion and evaluation of project goals and missions.

ASL Poetry Night February 24, 2010 Austin Community College ASL Poetry Performer Performed at the Eastview ACC campus – This was an entertainment event hosted by ASL Friends United. Deaf ASL Poetry performances that included a variety of genres such as ASL lyrics, poetry, and comedy for both hearing and deaf audiences.

DeafACT Austin Fall 2006 – Spring 2010 Producer Supervised all DeafACT productions in Austin, assembled special meetings when necessary, prepared agendas for officer meetings, conducted new member orientation, recruited new officers and member successors, acted as local spokesperson for the organization, periodically consulted with officers about their roles and helped them assess their performance, reserved performance space, interviewed potential directors, solicited assistance from local theatrical organizations, and acted as the backup director in the absence of an elected director.

University of Texas at Austin Summer 2009 to Summer 2010 ASLonline3 Tutorial Website Project Grant Approved by Joe TenBarge the Assistant Dean for Technology. Developed and established an online video tutorial web site that helps Advanced American Sign Language (ASL) students enhance their vocabulary and visual comprehension skills. Supervised the assistant working with video production. This includes, but is not limited to, editing using Final Cut Pro, compressing videos, saving to certain file formats, uploading video files to production servers, videotaping, and monitoring ASL signers during recording sessions. This project involved the Department of Liberal Arts Instructional Technology Services (LAITS) staff, their advanced web site design team, database structures, and support.

This project involved the Department of Liberal Arts Instructional Technology Services (LAITS) staff, their advanced web site design team, database structures, and support, in order to assist with the instruction of third semester ASL students. Future plans include working with the ASL Department and ASL models to develop additions to and a new web design for ASLonline3 for the “fourth semester” portion of the project.

University of Texas at Austin Fall 2006 to Spring 2007 ASLonline2 Tutorial Website Project: Extended through additional funding by LAITS Approved by Joe TenBarge, the Assistant Dean for Technology, LAITS approved an extension of funds for the assistants for Fall 2006 – Spring 2007. This involved maintenance work on ASLonline1, ASLonline2, and developing curriculum materials for the next ASL 3 project during personal time as a supervisor. Designed the ASLonline2 website and collaborated with LAITS to develop the new version for ASL 507 (2nd semester). In addition, supervised and trained student assistants on all techniques and different job duties for this project. The duties were similar to the ASLonline2 project listed below. University of Texas at Austin Fall 2005 to Spring 2006 ASLonline2 Tutorial Website Project grant with Dr. Richard Meier Approved by James Henson, the LAITS, Associate Director. Continued with the next project that developed ASLonline2 for the second semester of ASL classes and developed a new web design to motivate students to continue studying ASL as a foreign language. Supervisory duties included monitoring and helping the lab assistant, who videotaped, edited, compressed, revised, and transferred the files to the server. Coached and monitored the signers during the video recording schedule with the other team member who helped with curriculum development. Also collaborated with the LAITS team to develop a database and on other technical support issues.

University of Texas at Austin Fall 2003 to Summer 2004 ASLonline1 Tutorial Website Project grant with Dr. Richard Meier Approved by Steven Miller, the LAITS, Executive Assistant. Worked on transferring the original “pilot,” ASLonline, from the Center for Instructional Technologies (CIT) team to the LAITS team. This included working with new members of a curriculum development team. Supervised and trained the lab assistant on all techniques and different job duties for the first semester of ASL (ASL 506) for ASLonline. Transferred files to the servers and worked with a team who developed ASL curriculum for sign models. University of Texas at Austin Spring 2003 to Summer 2003 ASLonline Tutorial Curriculum Developer Developed an innovative website, “ASLonline Tutorial,” in collaboration with The Center for Instructional Technologies to design the website. This work was continued with the ASLonline grant in 2002.
