Nu This Time We Will Celebrate 20, Not 50

The year was 1995. That was the year Rabbi Andrew Paley was ordained; this month he celebrates his twentieth year in the rabbinate. As a new rabbi, what did the world look like when Rabbi Paley began his service as a clergyman? Only one month before there was the worst case of domestic terrorism to date, when the Oklahoma City Federal Building was devastated by a car bomb. The war in the Balkans had just come to an end, and a new item called Javascript was introduced. A gallon of gas cost $1.09, a postage stamp was 32 cents, and just to put in context where you might have been in your life, it was the year O.J. Simpson was found not guilty. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014), the current median tenure in a job is 4.7 years (4.5 if you are female, but you also get paid less). Only 30% of workers have been with their job for 10 years. Rabbi Paley joins a select few in the rabbinate; only 22% of the rabbis in the United States have been practicing clergy for 20 or more years. A congregational rabbi is an all-consuming job. The senior rabbi is available nearly 24 hours a day, always having to be ready for a hospital visit, a condolence call, or to meet with a family dealing with any type of personal crisis. Services, meetings, Torah Study, B’nei Mitzvah (sometimes two in a day), confirmation, meetings, preparing sermons, funerals/shiva, weddings, baby namings/bris, pet blessings, meetings, representing the congregation at community events, correspondence (letters, emails), visiting senior living centers, and more meetings. At the same time, Rabbi Paley is married with a daughter, Molly, getting ready for college and his son, Samuel, getting ready for high school (meaning he has dance recitals, college visits, and all the “regular” spousal and parental duties). The rabbinate is one of the those jobs, like a firefighter, where making “plans” always means making tentative plans, and he has been doing that for the past twenty years. Moreover, unlike Charles Barkley, Rabbi Paley is a role model for our congregation 24 hours a day; we often expect our rabbis to be the kind of Jews we don't have the time or discipline to be. The burnout rate for clergy is high, and it is because the job is too often seven days a week with intervals for brief naps. That is why congregations provide a sabbatical for their clergy, usually after seven years. Rabbi Paley has been our spiritual leader at Temple Shalom for 10 years, but has yet to be able to take a sabbatical. This summer, he will be taking some well-deserved time off, to recharge his batteries in preparation for the Temple Shalom’s big 50th Anniversary year-long celebration. During his sabbatical he will relax and continue his studies, checking up on the newest interpretation of Deuteronomy, researching the mysterious origins of gefilte fish, etc. We wish him the best on his sabbatical. Please join us on May 29 as Temple hosts a Special Shabbat Oneg in honor of Rabbi Paley, we install our new officers, and we wish Rabbi Paley a brief but relaxing sabbatical. 50th Anniversary Update

Almost 50 years ago, Temple Shalom became the first Reform synagogue north of LBJ Freeway in Dallas! The 50th Anniversary Year is now in full swing! Stay tuned to this section of the newsletter throughout the year for exciting updates on how you can help celebrate this milestone anniversary and plan for the next 50 years to come! You can check out all of the celebratory events associated with the anniversary on the Temple Shalom website in the “About Us” section bearing the 50th Anniversary label: http://templeshalomdallas.org/about-us/50th-anniversary. There are LOTS of great ways to get involved as we celebrate our last fifty years and build for our next fifty.

TORAH LEGACY PROJECT: One way we are celebrating our Anniversary is with The Torah Legacy Project, which kicked off in March. For great coverage of that event in the TJP, see the 4/9/15 edition, or read the article posted in the Temple Administrative Office. Thanks again to those of you who came to share in the exciting opening ceremonies for the Torah Legacy Project on March 29th! It was a great day of learning and celebrating. On that day, our founding families had the opportunity to scribe the first letter! For more pictures of the days’ activities as well as participants, volunteers and attendees, please click here: https://templeshalom50th.shutterfly.com.

As part of the opening day celebration, many families took the opportunity to scribe a letter in our new Torah. Our next Scribing dates will be on Sunday, May 3rd and Monday May 4th, and our wonderful volunteers and scriber families will share their experiences to encourage all of us to complete the 613th Commandment! Temple Members can sign up via Sign Up Genius (links below) to scribe or volunteer on one of the upcoming days: May 3rd scribing: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f49afac2ba7f49-scribe1 May 4th scribing: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f49afac2ba7f49-scribe2 October 11th scribing: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f49afac2ba7f49-scribe3 October 12th scribing: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f49afac2ba7f49-scribe4

Please note that in addition to scribing, we are looking for volunteers to help make sure each of these scribing days runs smoothly! Please sign up for a volunteer shift by clicking here: http://www.signupgenius.com/ go/10c0f49afac2ba7f49-volunteer2. Participation in the scribing event is absolutely free. For those who are moved to do so, there will be opportunities to dedicate portions of our new Torah - whether a book, an inspiring passage or story, a personal Bar or Bat Mitzvah parsha, or even just a letter - that may have special significance for you and your family. See the box at the left or go to the Torah Dedication page on the Temple Shalom website at http://www.templeshalomdallas.org/about-us/50th-anniversary/torah-dedication-page for information on dedication opportunities. The Torah Pass It On Committee is continuing to search for a recipient congregation. We will be reviewing the presentations and taking our next steps to connect our Torah with a congregation in need. If you are interested in this committee as we live out the spirit of L’dor V’dor, please join us! OTHER 50TH ANNIVERSARY ACTIVITIES: Keep your eyes open as you pass through the Temple and see if you can spot some 50th Anniversary treasures from our Archives! The display case near the Sanctuary would be a good place to start. Other learning activities will be announced soon. Questions? You can reach the Torah Legacy Project Team or the 50th Anniversary Committee by email at [email protected] or by voicemail at (972) 661-1810 ext. 527. We will make every effort to respond within 48 hours.

You ought to be in pictures! Were you married at Temple Shalom? Named at Shalom? Had a brit milah (bris) at Shalom? As part of our 50th Anniversary, we'd like to display photos of your simchas (celebrations). If you have a photo(s) to share please contact Bernie or Denise Mayoff at [email protected] or (972) 669-9169. They'll arrange to make a copy and you'll be famous.

Temple Shalom Spotlight Congregant of the Month

As part of getting to better know our congregation, each month we will feature a Temple Shalom Congregant. Dan Krause Please introduce your family. My wife is Carolyn, who everyone knows as “Kay”. We have been married since 1998. I imported her from Houston where she has a very large family, two brothers, a sister and numerous cousins. She has three kids and eight grandkids. The last one just graduated from college. I lost my first wife at age 44 and raised my kids from teenagers. My three children are Scot, age 49, Elizabeth, age 48, and Jill age 42. The girls live in Dallas and Scot lives in Atlanta with his wife Michele and his children Andrew, age 12 and Stephanie, age 10. Attending a Bar Mitzvah is in our immediate future! When did you join Temple Shalom? I am a founding member and was a member of Temple Emanu-El when it was decided that Dallas needed another Reform congregation. We wanted more input into what went on at the temple. I joined Shalom just after the High Holidays in 1965. Tell us a little bit about yourself. A native Texan, I came to Dallas as a teenager. My religious background was sketchy since Odessa had no rabbi and I understood no Hebrew. My mother went to Shearith Israel and I was lost during the Conservative service which was mostly in Hebrew. At 18, I asked the Executive Director Ray Israel at Emanu-El what it would take for me to become a member. He asked me if I had any money and I turned out my pocket to show him my fortune of $2.00. He took one of them and said, “You are now a member.” I graduated Tulane University in January 1956 and went into public accounting with Ernst and Ernst. Uncle Sam called that summer. They assigned me to a finance office for my time in the Army. After two years, I went back into public accounting with my CPA. My Bar Mitzvah was different, to say the least. My mother told me to pack some clothes for a few day trip to El Paso, which I thought was a trip to buy merchandise for the family store. We took the train from Odessa to El Paso where we met this gentleman in the station and then traveled to his home. I assumed he was a salesman. My mom and the man went into the dining room and closed the door. When they came out, my mother informed me that I was going to live with the Rabbi (that’s who the gentleman was!) for the summer and have a Bar Mitzvah in September! I learned all the prayers by rote. My mother was my only relative present. Now, who can tell a more bizarre tale? You are a Founding Member of Temple Shalom. As we approach our 50th Anniversary, what thoughts do you have about the journey that you and our Temple have taken over these past 50 years? Our first meeting was in the basement of a credit union at Preston Road and Royal Lane. We passed an actual hat for donations for mailings and other expenses. Our first Shabbat service was that Friday evening at Perkins Chapel at SMU. We had a membership of 35 people and most everyone came. Within weeks, St. Marks offered us their Chapel for Friday services, where we met until the end of May. We used lay people to lead services. So that the leader would not be the only one all dressed up, everyone came to services dressed for going out. It was a real family get-together. Small children came to services rather than being left with a sitter. I remember the Brand and Weiss children running around the Chapel on Friday evenings. I was on the first Rabbinic Search Committee for Rabbi Jaffe and remain in touch with him. As a Founding Member, my only regret is that I did not remain on the Board of Trustees past the first six months. I would have liked to involve Temple Shalom in more membership programs with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (today, it is the URJ). Of all the activities in which you have been involved at Temple, in which one did you have the most fun participating? Of all the activities that I have been involved in at Temple, Habitat for Humanity was most memorable. Building a home for those who would not otherwise be able to afford a home made your heart strings sing. I donated an ivy plant that I had grown to each new homeowner. We filled the pantry so that the new homeowners didn’t have to worry about food staples. What is your favorite Jewish holiday and why? My favorite Jewish Holiday is Passover because it brings family and friends together from far and wide. I can remember my mother having military personnel over during World War II from the bases in the area. Many were rabbis’ children. After a good friend from high school passed away, I can remember a large seder in my den which his entire family of 35 attended. Which of your activities at Temple fulfills you the most or makes you feel the most connected to Judaism or your Jewish identity? Being the archivist and keeping our history is a mission of love. I have begun a synopsis of Shalom from day one so we will not forget our history, including all the details that could be found. This is one of the things that the URJ said we should have done from the start. Unfortunately, much of the information from the early years was not maintained. I have contacted many of our members to look for any items that could be archived, especially pictures with names attached, committee meetings, minutes, old bulletins, and anything informative or interesting. If you have something, please let me know! As a Founding Member, what is your greatest memory of our Temple from the past 50 years? My greatest memory are all the plays and musicals that we used to put on with members of the congregation. Congregants today don’t realize the time involved in producing full-length productions of the caliber we used to perform, like How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. 65 Congregants were involved in that musical! All the rehearsals, the sets, the singing and dancing! I miss those productions - they developed such camaraderie among members. Thank you for being our Spotlight Congregant!
