Whatever the season, Jersey’s countryside makes the perfect location for a leisurely stroll. But how many times has the appearance of thoughtlessly dumped rubbish and waste spoiled the enjoyment. There is no excuse for ‘fly-tipping’, to give it a name, and Dave Monks of the Environment Department, would like Parishioners help in stamping it out.

Right: Fly tipped asbestos in Waterworks Valley

Below: Fly tipping in the Thankfully, there have not been too many instances of rubbish dumped in the rural Jersey Parish of St Lawrence. But it does happen, which is something that is unacceptable. St Lawrence has been helping the States’ Department of the Environment (DoE) to promote their fly-tipping project, which involves all parishes and other stakeholders coming together to combat this anti-social and environmentally damaging behaviour. The goal is to analyse the extent of the problem, identify any hotspots and encourage Parishioners to report fly-tipping. Recent incidents of fly tipping across the Island include domestic and garden waste, white goods, construction waste and oil. In St Lawrence, fly-tipping has occurred on the verges of green lanes, in Waterworks Valley, at the Maillard Memorial Range and at the Parish Recycling Centre, where only waste for recycling should be left. Some of this activity involves potentially hazardous materials. In April 2013, for example, there were two incidents of fly tipping asbestos in Waterworks Valley. Despite extensive investigations by both the Parish Police and the DoE, and public appeals for any witnesses, the culprits could not be identified. In recent years, there has been an increase in reported incidents of people dumping rubbish on private or public land, rather than taking it to Bellozanne or La Collette for proper disposal. Incidents reported to Environmental Protection increased from 22 in 2013 to 29 in 2014. An growth in public awareness is believed to be behind some of this increase, and the DoE would like to see the upward trend continuing. There really is no excuse for fly-tipping in Jersey. You can pay someone to remove your rubbish, making sure that only licenced contractors are used for certain types of hazardous waste such as asbestos. And Transport and Technical Services (TTS) provides sites for the proper disposal or recycling of household and commercial waste at Bellozanne Valley and La Collette. TTS is also the place to contact for information about both domestic and commercial disposal sites and the best way to dispose or recycle waste. Call 445509 or see www.gov.je. Anyone spotting waste where it shouldn’t be or witnessing it being tipped should report it to the Parish Hall or Environmental Protection at the DoE on 441600, the Pollution Hotline on 709535 or email [email protected].

See It. Report It. Stop It. Let’s have no excuses! Las laurentins-2-2015-5_Layout 1 06/02/2015 16:55 Page 9

by Alfie Pipon The Church Cross No one is actually sure where the St Lawrence Church Cross was situated, but it was almost certainly on the south side of the church. It must have been made of wood, as some part would have survived had granite been used. Certainty that it did exist, however, comes from two sources.

First, the Société Jersiaise museum has The Lychgate an Ouyé de Paroisse document in its Elias Collas erected this beautiful lychgate in List of Rectors archive for St Lawrence Church dated Before 1198 Sire Geoffrey 21 March 1463 (at a time Jersey was 1910 in memory of his wife, Jennet Susannah Balleine. The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. We aim to ensure that all pupils write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences. Winter2015 p13 Battleof Flowers by Sandra Noel St Lawrence Battle of Flowers Association - community spirit and friendship

Right and below: Community spirit and Happy New Year to everyone! friendship at the If you came to watch the Christmas Parade in December, we hope Christmas Parade you enjoyed it. St Lawrence battle members all had a fantastic time, singing, waving and looking very festive. Both our senior and junior floats were fully tinselled and well decorated in Christmas lights. Thank you to all those who helped with the Christmas transformation by painting, donating and decorating, and by turning out for the parade. Our motto is 'community spirit and friendship' and we work hard to achieve a fun and enjoyable atmosphere for all. We are already starting to fundraise for flowers, timber, etc., for this year’s float. We currently have ‘One Hundred Club’ tickets for sale, so if you would like a chance to win in the monthly draw, please let us know. Also don't forget our monthly fundraiser bingo on the last Saturday of each month at the Parish Hall. If you would like to be part of Battle 2015, you would be very welcome to join in! Please contact Sandra on 758976 or email [email protected] for more information.

Lake Malawi cichlids Last year we decided to change the type of fish in our fish tank. We were given advice from Barry, who works at Le Marquand’s Bros., and we bought 20 cichlids from Lake Malawi, which are very colourful, but are also very aggressive and territorial. They are now mature, but still growing, and we have already had over 150 fry hatch. These fish are really interesting as the female lays eggs, picks them up in her mouth and then keeps them there as the other fish will eat them. The eggs hatch and then she keeps them safe, for around 30 days, and then releases them into the tank. If she is worried about them, she swims around the tank and sucks them back in until she feels that the situation is safe again. Thank you to those parents and children who’ve given us lots of useful advice. We’ve got a feeling that we’ll have fish for sale soon! Las laurentins-2-2015-5_Layout 1 06/02/2015 16:56 Page 14

Interestingly, 1914-1915 Star, the British War and Victory Medals, there could be some clues given the date of entry into a particular theatre of war. A man in the Yorkshire Regiment arriving on 5 October 1914 say, would have almost certainly landed at Ostend or Zebrugge, and would have taken part in First Ypres. Of course, that statement requires additional information to construct it, so a useful resource might be ‘The Long Long Trail’ website. Regimental histories covering the Great War also contain such information, but building up a library of them can be expensive (that for the Hampshire Regiment can cost at least £24). The regimental histories are often derived from a unit’s War Diaries, and these give an account of where the unit was on a particular day, and what happened to it, along with casualties. Daily entries can occasionally be somewhat bland and understated, ‘Quiet day in the trenches, enemy shelling, 10 Other Ranks Killed’, but as a source to what the unit was up to, they are very useful. Moreover, the National Archive at Kew has been progressively digitising the diaries and these can be downloaded for a few pounds, a worthwhile exercise. Turning to service records, let us consider the officers first. The National Archive holds most of the War Office’s files on officers, but although these are not currently accessible through downloading they may be in the future. Furthermore, experience has shown that they might not contain all of the officer’s paperwork. Access to such files can either be through visiting the archive and becoming a reader, requesting the archive to copy the file, or by engaging a researcher. The logistics and associated costs need to be borne in mind. Proportionally, fewer service records for the army’s other ranks (OR) survive, about 30% or so. This is an accident of Las laurentins-2-2015-5_Layout 1 06/02/2015 16:56 Page 16

Visiting the Channel Islands in the Great War website www.greatwarci.net, built up over 10 years, also provides some of the information as well as links to other sources. Finally, it must also be recognised that, even with the existence of IT resources a century on, research might lead one up a cul-de-sac. Regrettably, if the information does not exist, it will not be found. Nevertheless, it is still worth the effort looking, so what better time to start than now? There’s a story about a farmer who noticed a sign by we absorb and the drive to get what we want, and often the result is the local airport that said ‘Experience the thrill of flying’, that we take life for granted. For instance, we can all too easily flick between channels on the TV, where one minute we are watching and he thought to himself, ‘It’s my wife’s birthday, I’d real-life stories in the news of death and destruction to homes and love her to experience the thrill of flying, I’m sure it communities, and then in a moment watch a film that portrays a similar would make a nice present.’ outcome. Our response is to take it in our stride, and sip our drinks as we watch. Another plane crash... another tragedy…another film…another terrorist attack…another news report…another film! So he goes to the airport, finds the pilot (of a small Another life… open-cockpit plane), but the price was too high. The farmer … except that is, when those we love are involved! In this case, it’s the tension between our sheer determination to get what we want at whatever the cost, and the value we place on people and things, including life itself. The bottom line is that life is valuable. We know that! Life is precious! We would unanimously agree! WinterWinter20152015 p p1919 Little Miracles in need of a hug

For parents, the birth of a child is an intensely special moment. While most will proudly leave hospital within days complete with newborn, for some mums and dads it’s the start of an anxious and often scary time. Babies that are born prematurely, or with complications, will often remain in hospital, cared for by the Special Care Baby Unit, or SCBU. Little Miracles is a recently established local charity that aims to provide support for those parents. Les Laurentins found out more from its chairperson, Cirsty de Gruchy-Wilson.

As is the way with many new charities, a personal experience motivated Cirsty de Gruchy-Wilson to set up Little Miracles. In 2011, Cirsty’s son Harry spent eight weeks in the SCBU at St Helier’s General Hospital, having been born eight weeks prematurely. While Harry may have gotten over his time in the unit and is now a boisterous three and half-year-old, for his parents it has remained an unforgettable experience. ‘We knew that Harry was going to be born early,’ Cirsty explained, ‘because of medical problems that showed up on a scan.
