Habitat for Humanity We have been actively involved with Habitat for Humanity since 2002 when staff and financial security advisors in London organized and sponsored the building of a new home for a local family. Since that time, we have participated in eight building projects. The sponsorship of the home provides an opportunity to make a corporate financial contribution to a valuable community project and to offer meaningful volunteer opportunities for staff and financial security advisors.

Developing a culture of philanthropy In line with our philosophy of building Stronger Communities Together™, we support the professional development and public awareness goals of two prominent professional organizations advancing philanthropy and the fundraising profession. For many philanthropically-minded individuals, making annual donations to their preferred charitable cause is their only mode of giving. But thanks to the LEAVE A LEGACY™ program, more and more people are considering the benefits of also leaving contributions through estate planning. LEAVE A LEGACY Canada, the Canadian Association of Gift Planners’ (CAGP-ACPDP™) national public awareness program, encourages Canadians to have a will and to consider making a charitable bequest to their charities of choice. Rather than promoting or soliciting gifts for any particular charity, it provides public education and resource materials to promote planned giving in general. Our national sponsorship of the LEAVE A LEGACY program in Canada, announced in 2004, is enabling CAGP to establish its website, produce communications and resource materials and continue to develop and promote its workshops. CAGP has also hired a LEAVE A LEGACY national coordinator to support planned giving professionals and RoundTables (local committees) across Canada. This complements our ongoing support of the CAGP annual national conference where we continue to sponsor a LEAVE A LEGACY workshop each year. Also supporting the development of the volunteer sector, the Association for Fundraising Professionals promotes philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs. In 2005, we provided a corporate financial contribution to the Manitoba chapter’s newly established education fund. Our contribution will support their upcoming Essentials in Fundraising program, which will be targeted to grassroots organizations whose financial resources prevent them from taking advantage of professional development and conferences mostly available in other provinces and the United States. The Manitoba chapter will be the first in Canada to offer this program.

We continue to contribute to the Historica Foundation, a national organization that offers a range of programs to provide Canadians with a deeper understanding of our history and its importance in shaping our future. Through its innovative YouthLinks website curriculum, students examine current issues in historical and current contexts and engage in online discussion and interactive learning. We sponsored the 2005 Youth Summit, organized by Historica. The summit builds upon yearlong study by inviting selected students who participated in YouthLinks. At the summit, they explore challenging world issues using history as a guide. Our $50,000 contribution to The Government House Heritage Property Saskatchewan Centennial Project supported the restoration of the former Lieutenant Governor’s mansion. The facility features a museum and outreach programs for youth to make history educational and entertaining. The Government House was a central venue for many activities during the province’s Centennial celebrations.

Tsunami Recovery Thanks to the generosity of staff members and financial security advisors, we provided a total of $385,124 to the Canadian Red Cross in January 2005 for the Tsunami relief effort. This amount includes individual donations collected from staff and financial security advisors totalling $235,124, as well as the company’s contribution of $150,000. The company’s contribution was provided on an exception basis in response to this international relief effort, recognizing both the interest expressed by staff and financial security advisors and the magnitude of this unprecedented natural disaster. (Our national corporate giving program continues to be focused on contributing to Canadian charitable and community based organizations.)

In 2005, Great-West received the Large Business of the Year Award from The Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) in recognition of business achievements and involvement in the community.
