For those who may not be familiar with RUFORUM, we were founded in 2004 by 10 universities in East and South Africa to transform African universities to jointly train critical thinkers, innovative and enterprising graduates to address Africa's agricultural problems. RUFORUM was also created to mobilize African researchers to gain knowledge, technology and innovation that are relevant to addressing the challenges of agricultural development in Africa and reaching out to communities to address these challenges. RUUMUMUM recognizes that African universities cannot achieve this goal alone and need to partner with universities and other actors in Africa and beyond. Indeed, two documentaries previously shown in this webinar demonstrate the value of partnership in addressing common challenges, increasing access to quality and infrastructure, and promoting better global understanding. This is what prompted RUFORUM to convene this webinar. The RUFORUM network has already benefited from partnerships with various agencies that We thank them for accepting to work with RUFORUM. As COVID-19 and Climate Change have shown, no country or continent can solve the problems facing humanity alone by emphasizing the need for global collective action in the exchange of knowledge, technology, infrastructure, human and financial resources to help each other solve problems. This need is even more relevant for universities, which are designed to be the producers of human resources with the highest skills and knowledge to create solutions to humanitarian problems, and even much more in agriculture, the food, employment and livelihood sector for most people. I hope that this webinar will provide an insight into the preparation of quality human resources, , innovation and entrepreneurial capacity, as well as to meet the most pressing needs of our time, such as climate change and COVID-19, so that we can produce sufficient quality food while keeping our planet healthy, productive and habitable. To learn more about this 58th anniversary of independence, I wish our visit and the President of the Republic of Uganda, His E. Ioveri Museveni, our First Lady and Minister of Education and Sport, Mother Janet Museveni, The Chancellor, the President and the members of the Council, Maceren and all Ugandans a peaceful and pleasant holiday. Despite numerous challenges, we have made significant progress in all areas of human development, especially in life expectancy. We are proud that Makerere University has played a key role in this journey. We must celebrate our successes and determination to do more in the service of our Motherland. Happy Independence Day! God bless Uganda! On 7 October 2020, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOHI) of the Government of the Republic of Uganda signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today with the Regional Forum of Universities for Agricultural Capacity Building (RUUMUM) in Kampala. The purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding is to strengthen science, technology and innovation (STIs) activities to reduce poverty, improve rural living conditions, entrepreneurship and job creation, and Uganda's national development through a partnership between RUFORUM and MOTI. As an ever-growing network of 129 universities in 38 African countries, RUUMUMUM recognizes that science, technology and innovation (CTSI) play a crucial role in reducing poverty, food and food security and broader economic transformation at the national and continental levels. It is therefore necessary to mobilize and organize research and research institutions for which universities have a greater role to play in promoting national and continental science, technology and innovation. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is a recognition that public-private partnerships are essential to achieving achievement duplication of efforts at the national and regional level. A multi-vector and multifunctional approach to integration and the creation of a reliable national scientific, technological and innovative enterprise is needed. Read the full press release
