Term 1 Issue 3 Friday 13 March 2015

From the Principal

Year 12 half yearly exams are fast approaching. For all of our year 12 students this is a crucial time of preparation and it should be remembered that year 12 work in all subjects began in term 4 last year. When I first arrived at Cromer and spoke to the year 12 cohort I challenged each and every student to choose the “pain of hard work”, which means sacrifice and plenty of study and preparation. I promised them that this path leads to goal achievement and success not just in the HSC but in all aspects of life. I would encourage all families of year 12 students to continue to support them as they prepare for these upcoming exams and help me to encourage them to follow that path of hard work and success.

This week the second P&C meeting for the year was held. I would like to thank all for attending and again encourage your involvement in this organisation. Our president Des has some great ideas and like all of us is passionate about making an even better school for our students. I will be sending SMS reminders to the entire community the day before our next meeting and would welcome your involvement. Des keeps the meetings flowing and focussed and is after as much expertise and involvement as possible. Plans are currently underway for election day in which the school will be a polling station and the P&C will be holding a BBQ. Help is about to be sought for volunteers who might be able to help on the day.

I am currently receiving a lot of requests for school tours from prospective families and have had to host one tour of our school every week. This replaces the previous system of one school tour a month. If you know of members of our community who missed our open day and are still interested in finding out more about Cromer Campus please encourage them to phone the school on 9981 1155 and book a spot. I personally host each tour, which involves a walk around the campus during class time where visitors get to see the school in operation and an opportunity to ask any questions in a relaxed and informal setting.

13 March 2015

Dear Parents

Camp Gallipoli is a not-for-profit organisation, which has planned an international event that will be a once in a lifetime experience focusing on the centenary commemoration of the 25 April 1915 landings at ANZAC Cove. The event will feature six hub and 25 regional campsites around and New Zealand, with each site having an historical link to Gallipoli, WW1 and other theatres of war. The venues will allow families, schools and community groups to camp out under the stars, just as the original Anzacs did 100 years ago. In , the event will be held at Centennial Park.

For all Australians and New Zealanders, Camp Gallipoli will be a respectful, unforgettable and moving tribute to all soldiers who have fought in the war. Camp Gallipoli is driven by the 11,000 voices of the Australian and New Zealand soldiers lost in battle at ANZAC Cove in 1915.

The school motto resonates closely with what the Camp Gallipoli experience is about, to provide our children with a deeper understanding of what it means to serve one’s country and to build a deep and lasting respect for all that our forefathers did to allow us to live in freedom and prosperity.

We have been able to secure limited tickets at the special price of $99 (inc GST per person and booking fee) for parents and their children to attend this special event on 24th through to 25th April, 2015. This means that all the families who purchase one or more of these tickets will camp together as a group at Centennial Park. People will arrive for the Camp Gallipoli experience at about 3.00pm on 24th April, with the event to conclude at 8.00am on Saturday 25th April. The camp will feature many forms of entertainment, including special guests, movies, documentaries, concerts and a unique Dawn Service on Anzac Day conducted by the RSL.

We believe this will be a popular event for people to attend around the country and tickets are limited at this unique event in our state. This is why we thought it important to book a number of tickets for our school community, as other schools have confirmed they will be participating.

To secure your tickets please call our reception today and we will reserve your tickets. Respectfully, it will be a case of those who book first will secure the tickets our school has been allocated. More information can be found on the website: www.campgallipoli.com.au Families may also wish to purchase a limited edition Camp Gallipoli swag, details about this can be accessed on the Camp Gallipoli website. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further details. Our school looks forward to supporting this special initiative for the families involved.

Yours sincerely,

Lynda Peters Deputy Principal

P & C News Corner

Our fledgling P&C committee has started taking the first steps toward gaining some momentum with our fund raising efforts for the year. Most of the projects that the P&C will be involved with will be aimed at improving the school grounds and making Cromer Campus a comfortable, inviting and exciting venue for our children to proudly come to each day. We will be sharing information on our proposed fund raisers and projects with you over the coming weeks in the newsletter.

With the end of Term 1 fast approaching, the P&C have decided that we would like to kick off the year with something easy, fun and involving our kids. Our idea is to put together 2 Easter Hampers and then to run a competition or a raffle for the children to win the hamper. The prizes will be given out in the last week of the term. We ask parents/carers or children to donate the Easter eggs – either one egg, packet of smaller eggs or anything that your family enjoys – to help make up the hamper. Any donations can be handed in at the front office. We urge you all to please try and make this a success.

We are looking for people to assist with a bacon & egg sale on the 28th March at the school as this is a voting station and we would like to sell B & E rolls and cold drinks on this day. We are looking for people to do a quick shift at the tent. We will start selling from 7-00 and run till 2-00. If anyone would like to assist or would like to know more please email Desmond at [email protected] any assistance would be welcome.

To help us with our planning for future events we want to build a database of resources that we have as part of our school community. The idea is to better understand what is available to us within in our school community in terms of suppliers, subject matter experts and/or volunteers. Once again you are requested to email Desmond McLachlan on this. We will also be sending out a short form for parents to complete.

Finally we would like to invite all our parents to join the P&C, it is a fun way to meet others, perhaps learn or even teach a new skill and most importantly to support our children.

Desmond McLachlan P & C President

Inspire Day

Congratulations to Errol Bousfield, our School Captain, on the organization of another fantastic Inspire Day. This term the theme was “Animals Inspire us Every Day”. A number of Animal and Wildlife organisations set up information stalls on the front lawn and students were able to meet some very inspiring animals and their handlers.

One of the many highlights of the day was the Pet Photo competition which ended up being very strongly contested.

Errol was ably supported by the Social Inc Group who provided wonderful food and drinks for everyone at lunchtime. Thanks also to Mrs Condrick and her team was providing so much help.

Early Achiever Programs

Many universities offer early achiever or early admission programs. Often these require a community service statement. In this statement students have to be able to demonstrate involvement in the community, such as a sustained and regular voluntary contribution to their school, church, local community, sporting organization or cultural organization. Some of these may include:  School leadership positions  Surf Life Saving Club participation  Local Government activities  Peer Mentoring and support programs  Regular participation in fundraising events

2015 HSC Rules and Procedures

Parents / Caregivers and students should be familiar with the 2015 Rules and Procedures booklet. It is available in the Students On Line section of the BoSTES website or hard copies are available at the school. See Ms Bird if you need more information regarding this document.

Year 10

Students in Year 10 are currently participating in Faculty Focus sessions during the Whole School Program. This enables Head Teachers and Course Teachers to provide information to Year 10 students which will assist them in making decisions about what to study in Stage 6. When thinking about the future students should ask themselves:  What inspires me?  What do I like to do?  What am I good at? They should consider their abilities, investigate their options and then make a plan. ATAR myths: There is no magic formula for getting a god ATAR. It depends on how well a student does in all of their courses in comparison to other students. Scaling of HSC results is carried out afresh each year. If the quality of the candidature changes the scaled mean will change. Subject choices should be based on:  Interests  Demonstrated abilities  Future career plans

My Year 7 Camp

By Charlotte Cullum in 7A

For me, Year 7 camp was an adventure full of many possibilities.

On Monday the 23 February, all the Year 7 students from Cromer boarded buses to head out to Camp Morisset for three days of fun. While I was there I made a lot more friends than I had before camp, and I found out that there were many people who liked the same sort of things that I did. Before camp I thought that I had nothing in common with most kids in my year, but I was wrong.

We did a lot of fun activities like the High Rope Course, Archery, the Leap of Faith, Pioneering, Mud World and my all- time favourite thing - Commando. Commando was when we all get ourselves into teams, then at night all the teams went out and found hostages that were located deep in the forest. The aim was to rescue as many hostages as you could and get them back to the base safely, the whole time avoiding the teachers in the dark who were dressed up in army

Page 9

CROMER COURIER

fatigues and covered in war paint.

When I was on the High Ropes Course I was so scared, as I am afraid of heights, but everybody at camp was so supportive that I managed to get to the other side without being as afraid as I thought I would be. I was really happy that I conquered my fear.

On the first night of camp we had a disco which I thought was a lot fun, and everyone had the chance to bust out some moves – including the teachers and the Year 10 peer support leaders.

Another thing that I enjoyed about camp was the delicious food. For breakfast I’d have something that really tickled my taste buds like coco pops and pancakes. I enjoyed meals like spaghetti, burgers and hotdogs.

The saddest thing about camp was we having to leave, but I have lots of new friends now at school so it isn’t that sad. I can’t wait for the next camp. BRING IT ON!!

Celebrating the Yellow and the Blue – by Tye Bate

The wheels of the bus came to a stop. Year 12 Business Studies was now at IKEA Tempe. We all carried blue field trip booklets which had a range of questions aimed at Operations and

Marketing which are the two topics we've been studying in class.

As we entered the retail / warehouse we knew there was no hope heading back, because, part of IKEAs strategy is to make the customer go forward and spend all their money (i.e. impulse buying).

We learnt about the significance of the showrooms and how they attract the customer to purchase a cushion or teapot because it happens to go with the colour scheme of the furniture and walls. We learnt about the quality and design of products, cost of products and the store layout.

We came then to the store dining areas where we all celebrated the insightful day with salmon, chips, one dollar hot dogs and a glass of cola with free refills.

Thanks Ms. Tsolakis and Mrs Emo for a great knowledgeable excursion.

KNOCKOUT SPORT

Girls Open Soccer

On Wednesday 25th February the girls took on Cherrybrook Technology at Cromer Park. Cherrybrook came out fast and were dominating play for the first 5 minutes. Finally our girls started reading the play and putting together some great passages of play. A through ball to Alyssa Deal, saw her beat 3 players with her skill and pace and she slotted the ball into the back of the net, 1-0 to Cromer.

Cherrybrook stepped up a gear and within a couple of minutes had pegged the score back to 1-1. Great saves by Gemma McQueen and defensive work from Siena Moss, Madison Mumford, Tara Schmidt, Grace Cook and Bridget Bevan kept the scores deadlocked right up until a few minutes before halftime, Cherrybrook sent a corner in, which missed everyone and ended up curling into the back of the net, 1-2 to Cherrybrook.

In the second half both teams continued to put pressure on each other’s goalies and Grace Jacobs stepped up to the job pulling off great saves. Brilliant play from Samantha Edwards, Britney Tassone, Courtney Garrick and Sophie Williams ensured we were still continually attacking and in the hunt for the equalising goal. Sammie Inglis, Madison Brilman, Amy Gill and Sophie McGovern all controlled the midfield and were strong in defence. Unfortunately it was not to go our way and the final score ended Cromer 1 – Cherrybrook 2. Ms Crawford (Coach)

Girls Open Touch Football

Manly Selective Campus proved no match for the Cromer Touch girls last Tuesday. The game started off fairly slowly and relaxed until Cromer crossed the line for their first try. The Paki sisters confused the defenders with all their pass backs, creating holes in Manly’s line. Though the Manly defence stood up to the continual onslaught, Cromer managed to find the gaps over and over.

The score at the half time break was 3 – 1 but the Cromer girls knew they could do better. They got back on the field after the half time pep talk and Sariah Paki scored on the first ball. The Cromer girls dominated in the second half finishing the game with a 7 – 1 victory. They are now only one win away from the Area Carnival. Good luck girls!!!

Boys Open Touch

The Open Boys met their match when they played The Forest High School in round 2 of the Open Knockout. Cromer was missing some of its key driving players, which left a big gap in our attacking force. As a result, we were unable to secure the win, with a one point difference on the hooter.

Girls Open Basketball On Friday the 27th of February the Open Girls Basketball team played High School at Cromer Campus.

For many of the girls it was their first competitive game of basketball against another school. Turramurra were a well prepared outfit with one or two seasoned players with outstanding basketball skills.

Played in very good spirit, the rotation of players from both teams meant the competition was even for much of the game and the girls really enjoyed the match. Well done in particular to Leone, Heaven-Lee and Sophie who played particularly well on the day, scoring many of our points.

The score was 35-23 at the close and well done to our girls for playing their best. We have a good foundation to build a competitive basketball team for the Knock Out competition in 2016.

The Open Girls Basketball team consisted of: Sophie McGovern Alyssa Deal Sami Perrin Britney Tassone Alisi Kanongataa Lipeti Baranyi Heaven-Lee Taylor Leone Gelashvili

Golf Strokeplay

On Monday 2nd March the Sydney North Golf Strokeplay Championships were held at Manly Golf Club. Connor Duff, Matthew Grenot and Corey Fairchild participated from Cromer Campus. The boys all had a great day, with Connor Duff qualifying for the Matchplay section to be held at Wyong Golf Club on 17thMarch. Well done Connor!

Girls Open Netball

After almost 2 hours travelling, the girls Netball team took to the court at the SNA Knockout Carnival. Game 1 was against the defending State Carnival Champions, though we didn’t know that at the time. The game was really tough, with Terrigal HS putting Cromer to the test. Katie’s return from Freshwater was a godsend, with her awesome shooting ability. All the girls put in everything they had, but were unable to hold off the locals.

Game 2 was against Hunters Hill HS. Cromer came out strong and took to the lead early in the first quarter. In the second quarter they again tallied point after point, showing excellent teamwork and skills. Hunters Hill came back in the third and fourth quarters, but Cromer’s early lead was too good to match.
