Kevin Sheehan’s top 40 2017 NAB AFL Draft prospects AFL National and International Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan today announced his top 40 prospects ahead of the 2017 NAB AFL Draft to be held in Sydney on Friday, November 24. Sheehan said the Draft marks the start of the 2018 football calendar. “This year the Draft selections are wide open, which is testament to the evenness and high standard of the young players entering the AFL,” he said. “Debate continues on who will be selected in which order for the first round which makes the event very exciting. “Club recruiting staff are still working hard after months of preparation to confirm their selections, while the players and their families are counting down the days as they prepare for the next step in the AFL talent pathway.” This year’s Top 40 features Select Future Forces trading cards that promote the NAB AFL Draft. TAC Cup Round 2 TAC Cup Girls Round 3 1 - 2 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes Perkins a lesson in persistence Not much knocks the AFL men’s competition off the front page of the paper, especially during the opening round of the season. But the NAB AFL Women’s Grand Final did just that on the weekend, with premier Adelaide – featuring Eastern Devils Swisse VFL Women’s draft ee Sarah Perkins – recognised on the front page of The Age with the headline ‘Making HerStory’. With close to 100 VFL Women’s players draft ed into the AFL this season, just one now has the title of premiership player, with Perkins to be congratulated on being part of the successful Crows outfit. Perkins is a great example to up-and-coming female and male players, having been overlooked at the women’s draft but making the most of the late lifeline thrown to her by Adelaide to live out her AFL dream. The TAC Cup regularly provides over 50 per cent of the talent to the AFL at draft time, but it is only a small percentage of players from the competition that are draft ed. Each weekend almost 300 players take to the field representing their region, with double that amount on TAC Cup lists. While it is the elite talent that is oft en focused on in the competition, we should also recognise the role our clubs play in developing future Peter Jackson VFL and local players. The skills learnt at this level are taken back into the community, as the players become leaders from the education and training provided in the TAC Cup.

The dedicated round highlights the contribution multicultural communities have made to the game’s history and welcomes new communities to embrace Australian Football as fans, players, umpires and administrators. Across Victoria, there are a number of fantastic multicultural and indigenous programs which continue to bring people from all backgrounds and walks of life together. Programs including Laguntas, Kickstart, Multicultural School Programs, Towards Zero Diversity Squads and the All Nations high-performance team are enabling young talent to be identified and have access to more opportunities to become the next crop of AFL stars. One way AFL Victoria is connecting these programs to the talent pathway is via our VFL Multicultural Ambassadors, who are assisting with these participation opportunities in the community. TAC Cup Round 1 24 & 26 March 2016 $3.00 25th TAC Cup season underway Welcome to the start of another season in AFL Victoria’s TAC Cup competition. This year marks the 25th year of our elite U18 program, and we are pleased to once again have the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) supporting the development of our talented players across our 12 regions. Throughout the season we will profile a number of people that have been part of the TAC Cup over the years, with AFL coaches like Justin Leppitsch, Brad/Chris Scott and Adam Simpson plus modern-day players such as Joel Selwood, Gary Ablett and Scott Pendlebury all having origins in the competition. Last year 47 players from our 12 regions joined those names as draft ees from the TAC Cup in the NAB AFL National and Rookie draft s. It is a great reflection on the staff in each of our regions and the local clubs that have helped these players on their journey to achieve their dream of being draft ed to the AFL. We have seen a number of draft ees get their first taste at the elite level in the AFL’s NAB Challenge, and we hope to see a number of players debut in the opening round of the season and throughout the year. Community Umpiring Round VFL Round 6 TAC Cup Round 7 13 - 15 May 2016 $3.00 Photo: Brian Bartlett Umpire recognition as important as ever Football leagues around Victoria will celebrate Community Umpiring Round this weekend. Respect and appreciation for umpires should not just be recognised one round per season, but should be done every week. They do a great job controlling a game where the skill and speed continually increases, as do the demands on umpires. Just like footballers, umpires are dedicated athletes whose preparation and passion for the game is unwavering. And, just like footballers, AFL Victoria strives to provide a clearly defined pathway for umpires to progress their participation to the highest level. Since 2013 there has been 15 umpires promoted to the AFL – five field, six boundary and four goal umpires. That means that of the 32 AFL field umpires, 19 are Victorian (60 per cent), while close to 50 per cent of the 101 umpires on the 2016 AFL lists are also from our state. This is a great reflection of the hard work of our umpiring department, led by State league Umpiring Head Coach Cameron Nash. As Cameron speaks about in this edition of the Record, a key focus over the last 18 months has been bridging the gap between community and state league umpiring. The introduction of rookie squads has enabled promising local umpires to experience what it takes to reach the next level, exposed to the training standards and preparation needed to take the next step in their umpiring career. Another positive aspect is the increase in our female umpiring numbers, with seven female umpires (three field, one boundary, three goal) now part of our squad.

VFL Round 3 TAC Cup Round 5 28 - 30 April 2017 $3.00 Photo: Cameron Grimes Room for all VFL club models The team landscape in the Peter Jackson VFL will change in 2018 with the announcement during the week that Werribee and North Melbourne both intend to field standalone sides in the competition next season. The VFL will continue to foster a number of diff erent team models that suit the various clubs involved, from standalone VFL and AFL clubs to strong AFL/VFL club alignments. AFL Victoria will work with both clubs throughout the year to help them with the transition to standalone status for next season, ending a 10-year alignment between the clubs. The change of alignment will provide positives for both. With the decision made early in the 2017 season, both clubs now have time to prepare from an on and off -field perspective for the upcoming 2018 season and going standalone. In the case of North Melbourne, they see it as the best model for the development of its players and to meet its strategic objectives, along with off ering a number of top-up positions on their list. Werribee will now be able to off er 23 VFL senior-listed positions each week in its side, expanding its ability to provide a host of up-and-coming talent in Victoria an opportunity to play VFL football. They will be hoping to discover the next Ben Brown or Kyle Hartigan, who have both progressed through the Werribee program in recent years. As we have seen over a number of years, alignments change and the VFL continues to evolve.
