Dear Parents/Carers

Here is the latest news from Rawlins Academy.

Quote for the week This week’s quote comes from American Episcopal clergyman and writer of the hymn “O Little town of Bethlehem” Phillips Brooks.

Although the quote probably made reference to different human faults back in the mid 1800s than we see today, the sentiment remains the same in 2019.

Nobody is perfect and giving space for reflection is key to allow each other to take stock and improve.

Please talk with your son or daughter about the quote and their views as to what it means in our modern world.

Parent Time – 8 April 2019 We look forward to welcoming parents who have made an appointment to our final Parent Time of the Spring Term. This will be an extended event running from 3:20 – 6:00pm and will run concurrently with the Scholastic bookfair in our Learning Resource Cente (see article later in Raw Release).

It’s our ninth opportunity of the academic year to meet with parents with three opportunities remaining in the Summer Term. Please make sure that you are making appointments in a timely manner and please be reminded that we would expect parents to limit their visits to a maximum of three within the year. It becomes particularly important around the time of exams that these guidelines are adhered to, to ensure parents of those taking exams can meet with relevant teaching staff.

We’d also like to remind parents that you don’t have to wait until Parent Time to get in touch if you have any questions or concerns. Please visit our website and the Our Staff section for contact details. Staff will always aim to respond within 48 hours, during the working week and during office hours.

Easter Revision Sessions – Year 11 Students We are running Easter Revision sessions during the Easter break for the benefit of all of our year 11 students and we encourage as many students as possible to attend as each session will be focused on exam content and skills.

Students are also encouraged to come into school to use the Post 16 area for revision if there are no relevant sessions running at a particular time. In the Post 16 centre, students will have access to computers, an area for working with friends, a silent area for individual revision and support from a member of the extended leadership team.

To access this out-of-hours support, we are asking parents to pay a nominal fee of £10 to help towards the cost of running these sessions. Students will be able to attend all revision sessions and have access to the Post 16 centre every working day over the Easter holidays.

Parents are asked to pay on Wisepay, under the ‘General Payments’ section.

Alex’s Wish Alex Hallam, a year 8 student at Rawlins, has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This is a genetic disorder characterised by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. The disease affects one in every 3,500 boys and sufferers normally don’t live much beyond their 20s due to failure of heart and respitatory muscles. More about Alex’s story and the disease is shown on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uxxh3xk0_g

Alex’s parents have set up a charity Alex's Wish | fundraising charity for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy with the aim of raising enough money to facilitate research into finding a new treatments and ultimately a cure for the disease.

They hold various fundraising activities throughout the year. Hiten Patel, one of the PE teachers at Rawlins, has registered for the 20 mile cycle ride on the Sunday 12 May, which starts in Rothley: Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride 2019 - Alex's Wish. He has set up a team fundraising page with another staff member, Sarah Hammond and would be grateful for any donations: Virgin Money Giving | Team Alex's Wish

Boys Basketball This week it was the turn of the boys with four of our teams reaching the Team County Basketball Finals night, once again hosted at the home of the Riders.

Three wins out of four for Rawlins this time round as year 7, year 10 and post 16 were crowned county champions (beating Martin High School, Countesthorpe Leysland Community College and respectively). Commiserations to the year 11 team who were beaten by .

To reach seven of the twelve county finals is an amazing achievement for one school and special thanks go to Mr Giga who has been the driving force for participation and success over several years.

The year 7 boys team have also progressed in the Junior NBA competition, representing the Toronto Raptors. They faced Littleover Community School of Derby (representing the Chicago Bulls) in the East Midlands quarter finals yesterday, winning 50-6 and are through to the East Midlands semi final.

Disruptions to traffic in Quorn (Chaveney Road, Woodhouse road, Warwick Avenue) Those who live in the area will be aware that between April and June, Severn Trent will be doing extensive repairs to water pipes in the area listed above.

This may cause disruption to traffic with various traffic light systems in place over the three month period. Please be aware of this when travelling to and from Rawlins.

Education in focus - Specialist Leaders in Education

In the first of a new series looking at some of the work that takes place within our school that isn’t always evident, we take a look at the role of the Specialist Leaders in Eductaion.

Almost ten years ago the Department for Education introdcued Specialist leaders in Education (SLEs). These teachers are experienced middle or senior leaders whose expertise is used to support middle and senior leaders in other schools.

SLEs focus on developing leadership capacity. While other roles focus specifically on developing classroom expertise, this role is about developing the capacity and capability of other leaders so that they have the skills to lead their own teams and improve practice in their own schools.

Rawlins Academy has 5 SLEs who all work on behalf of the Loughborough Learning Alliance, a teaching school which is a dedicated coordination between the schools in and around Loughborough.

The SLEs at Rawlins: Matt Byrne (Assistant Principal), Nigel Breakwell (Head of year 11), Matt Kinsey (Head of year 13), Diane Mason (Assistant Director of Learning, Synergy Faculty) and Cathy Robinson (Vice Principal).

Next week, we’ll take a look at Initial Teacher training and the crucial role that Rawlins plays in the development of trainee teachers.

A message to Year 13 Students who are applying to University… Student Finance is now open. Guides have been given to students to help with their applications and the following link may be useful for parents and carers who will need to support their child’s application. www.gov.uk/student-finance

Loughborough College Open Day – Wednesday 10 April from 4pm-7pm A great opportunity to see the courses available at a local FE provider. See their website for more details and to register your interest in attending.

DMU Talent Easter School Many congratulations to four year 10 students who have successfully gained places on a DMU Talent school, running over the Easter holidays. Dillon Lakin, Rose Shepherd and Katie Judd will be participating in the Art and Design school, whilst Ellie Deacon will be attending the Drama school. The students had to submit detailed application forms, some with examples of their work, as part of the application process and we are very proud that our students gained places along with other candidates from Leicester and Leicestershire schools. This is a great opportunity to experience university facilities and work alongside expert tutors and DMU current students. We look forward to hearing all about the Talent School on their return from the Easter holidays.

Could you help support some students with Mock Interviews? We are holding a Year 10 Careers Day on Wednesday 26 June and one of the afternoon sessions is Mock Interviews. We are looking for parents or carers who would be comfortable in conducting interviews with a small group of students. There is no preparation required, just the ability to conduct an interview and give some feedback at the end. For more details please contact either Sally Cooper or Beverley West – Careers Advisors.

Support with Personal Statements for Year 12 students We are aware that following the recent UCAS Fair at DMU, several year 12 students are starting to seriously consider their choices for after year 13 and are beginning to compile their Personal Statements for University.

Over the next few months there will be supported sessions for students on the whole university application process. For any parent or carer who is unfamiliar with UCAS and would like some more information in order to help support your child, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Cooper or Mrs West.

Scholastic Book Fair Following on from its continuing success at Rawlins the Scholastic Book Fair is back in time for Easter.

The Book Fair is a pop-up event that will be taking place from 3-9 April in the LRC. This celebration of reading is a great opportunity for you to browse and buy books with your child without breaking the bank. With over 200 of the newest and the best children’s books available – each chosen by Scholastic’s expert book buyers – there will be something to catch the eye of even the most reluctant reader. You’ll find a wide range of books suitable for your child’s age-range and the school can earn free books for every book that’s bought, so it is also an excellent way of supporting our school library.

The Book Fair will be open to students from 8am until 4pm every day between 3 and 9 April and we will also be taking all of our year 7, 8 and 9 students into the LRC to browse the books in one of their English lessons. All the books are half price and do include some of the latest releases. There are 3 different ways to purchase the books:

· Students can pay for books and stationery items using cash · Students can also use vouchers which can be purchased online. By using this method, you will also be given an extra 20% discount so, for example, you will get £12 worth of books by paying just £5. The downside to this method, is that no change is given, but there are smaller items such as stationery that can be purchased to make up the difference. Discounted Gift Vouchers are available at www.bookfairs.scholastic.co.uk/parents and must be printed off to hand in to the LRC.

If you require any further information on this event, please email [email protected]
