Saint Joseph Cathedral Parish is called to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ as a community. We are committed: to our urban neighborhoods, to being the Cathedral of the Diocese, and to fellowship, formation, sacrament, and prayer. Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4 • Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14 • Luke 17:5-10 Our readings for this Sunday today show us that living a This Week Christian way of life — a life focused on serving God and His At The Cathedral Kingdom — is not easy. They also show us that our lives belong October 6 - 13, 2019 to God, not to us, and that God will indeed bring about the fulfillment of His kingdom. We just need to have faith that He can do it and commit to our small part in His grand design. This vvvvv is both our privilege and responsibility as Christian disciples. Jesus makes this privilege and responsibility clear in today’s SUN Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel passage from Luke. When the apostles ask the Lord to 6 increase their faith, He tells them that even a mustard seed-sized (Sat) 6:00 pm Mass for Ann Thomas faith is all that is needed to move mountains (because it is God 8:00 am Mass for Shirley Sheets who does the heavy lifting). Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 3 Pope opens Missionary Month with call to share joy, hope, talents By Carol Glatz, Catholic News Service losing face,” he said. The Extraordinary Missionary Month is meant to “jolt us and motivate us to be active in doing good. Not notaries of faith and guardians of grace, but mis- sionaries,” he said. Like martyrs, missionaries live a life spreading peace and joy, loving everyone, even their enemies, out of love for Jesus, he said. In the parable, the master is pleased with his enterprising servants as “good and trustworthy” and harshly criticized his fearful servant as “wicked and lazy.” God severely reproaches the fearful servant because his evil “was not having done good; he sinned by omission,” the pope said. “Omission is the opposite of mission,” Pope Francis venerates an image of St. Francesco Saverio during a prayer vigil opening a he said. Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time | Luke 17:5-10 From the time we are knit together in our mothers’ wombs until we take our final breaths, each moment of our lives is a gift from God. While every season of life brings its own chal- lenges and trials, each season also gives us new opportunities to grow in our relationship with God. Today the gift of life is threatened in countless ways. Those who are most vulnerable, rather than receiving the protection they deserve, are all too often seen as a burden and as expendable. As new attacks on human life continue to emerge, we can be tempted to despair, but Christ instead offers us unfailing hope. By virtue of this Christian hope, we can face any challenge or trial. May we hold fast to Christ our hope, from the beginning of life to its very end.

Its first stones were laid in the third century. Renowned as the major burial place of the French monarchy, it owes Week of October 6 its establishment and subsequent prestige to the presence of the of St. Denis, first Bishop of Paris, martyred during the third century. The legend surrounding the Monday saint’s life is complex, as three historical figures appear to have been conflated into one legendary Jonah 1:1-2:2, 11 figure. He is portrayed as Dionysius, the evangelizer of Gaul; , a disciple (Ps) Jon 2:3, 4, 5, 8 of Paul; and later as Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, the author of mystical works. Who was Luke 10:25-37 the real St. Denis? Historians have not reached a consensus, partly because the stories are too Tuesday good not to be told. The favorite of the French is the beheading of Bishop Denis on the hill of Jonah 3:1-10 Montmartre, along with his companions, the presbyter, Eluetherius, and the deacon, Rusticus. Ps 130:1-2, 3-4, 7-8 He did not lose his head, however, for he picked it up and walked two miles; his lips chanting Luke 10:38-42 the psalms, until he reached his chosen burial spot. There his relics have remained ever since. This miracle of cephalophore (picking up your head after being decapitated and walking away) is well Wednesday attested to in hagiographical accounts and in medieval iconography. Patronage: those who suffer Jonah 4:1-11 from headaches; Paris; Ps 86:3-4, 5-6, 9-10 Also celebrated on October 9 is Saint John Leonardi (1541-1609), founder of Luke 11:1-4 the Clerks Regular of the Mother of God of Lucca. In 1925 he became a papal Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 11-12 diplomat, serving in Belgium, Turkey, and in France. With the help of Germany’s ambassador to Luke 11:27-28 Turkey, Roncalli helped save an estimated 24,000 Jewish people during World War II. Named a Sunday cardinal and appointed patriarch of Venice in 1953 by Pope Pius XII, he was elected pope in 1958 at age seventy-eight. He took the name after his father and the two patrons of Rome’s cathedral, 2 Kings 5:14-17 St. John Lateran. He convoked (1959) the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). “Good Pope Ps 98:1, 2-3, 3-4 John” died of stomach cancer on June 3, 1963. On his deathbed, Pope John pointed to the 2 Timothy 2:8-13 Crucifix near his bed and called it “the secret of my ministry.” “Those open arms have been the Luke 17:11-19 program of my pontificate: they mean that Christ died for all, for all. No one is excluded from his love, from his forgiveness.” He was canonized along with Saint John Paul II by Pope Francis on the Second Sunday of Easter in 2014.
