David Byas – Director of Sport – I/C , Boys Hockey, Boys Tennis, Swimming & Rounders

David is a Level 4 elite & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) coach and previously enjoyed playing professional cricket with and Lancashire. He was when Yorkshire won their first for 33 years in 2001 and it was the club where he became Director of Cricket in 2004. David was involved as an ECB coach where he coached and mentored a number of international and first- class umpires, in both the professional game and at County second team level. David is a former senior Yorkshire hockey player who represented England U21s in the European Cup in Portugal. He is currently a Level 2 coach and is the lead coach for hockey U13/U14 boys. Now Director of Sport at School, he also runs his own sports academy.

Lucy Hornby – Head of Co-curriculum & Teacher of P.E – I/C Girls Hockey & Netball

Lucy has joined with a wealth of hockey experience. As a player, she captained Pocklington School 1st team before going on to play for Metropolitan 1st team at university and gain representative honours for Humberside and North of England. She has coached at both Ampleforth and Stamford Schools where she was Head of Netball and Head of Hockey respectively. Lucy also plays club tennis at .

Jonny Wheeler – Head of Athletic & Coaching Development - I/C Rugby

Jonny comes from a strong Rugby League background having represented Gloucestershire and South West Students before gaining experience at international level for Great Britain Pioneers. Jonny is a qualified Level 3 rugby union coach. He is a lead coach in The Yorkshire Rugby Academy’s Developing Player Programme and coached Yorkshire U19s in 2019. He is Head of Athletic Development at Pocklington School and is studying for a PhD in Talent Development at Leeds Beckett University. Before starting this role, Jonny worked in professional rugby with Leicester Tigers and Stade Rouennais in France. He has worked with North England Women U15 and U18 squads as well as the national U20 squad. He has spent time with Bath University Rugby League, Byas Academy and Castleford Tigers.

Charlotte Mortimer – Teacher of P.E & BTEC - I/C Girls Tennis

Charlotte is a qualified Level 3 Coach and has since used her coaching qualification mainly in a school setting to help grow girls’ tennis at Royal Grammar School, Newcastle, Queen Margaret’s and Pocklington. Charlotte currently plays for David Lloyd, Harrogate and previously attended Loughborough University. Charlotte also captained her county at hockey and was part of the regional performance training and England player pathway. She has represented Loughborough University 2nd XI and more recently Morpeth and Harrogate Hockey Club. She is a qualified Level 2 hockey coach, her previous roles including Head of Girls Hockey at Queen Margaret’s School.

Steve Spruyt – I/C Athletics

Steve leads the athletics programme utilising his wealth of experience from his triathlon and ironman career. Previously a rugby league player, Steve now has a passion for athletics, in particular the discus. Steve also co- ordinates sports day each year in addition to updating the School’s athletics and sports day records. Away from athletics, Steve is a Level 2 rugby coach and coaches the U13 rugby team and the Developing Player Programme with The Yorkshire Rugby Academy.

Henry Perham – NQT Teacher & Assistant S&C Coach Henry represented Prince Henry’s Grammar School 1st XV rugby and went on to play for Myerscough College (Sale) in the Advanced Award for Sporting Excellence (AASE) League and achieve representative honours for North of England Colleges. He is a Level 2 coach and works at both Pocklington Prep and Pocklington School as well as the Developing Player Programme with The Yorkshire Rugby Academy. Henry is also a Level 2 cricket coach and previously coached Yorkshire County Cricket Club U15 girls’ team. He also still plays for Knaresborough Cricket Club and has represented their 1st XI team.

Charlie Lambert – Teacher of P.E

As a player, Charlie represented East Yorkshire cricket U12-U15, captaining the side at U15 level. He went on to play for Yorkshire Cricket Club Development U15s and later captained both Pocklington Cricket Club and Pocklington School. Charlie is a Level 2 coach and has coached East Yorkshire U12s as well as players at the Byas Academy and Ryan Sidebottom Academy. Charlie represented the 1st XV rugby when he attended Pocklington School and he now works across the School’s games afternoons, having led the U14s to an undefeated season in 2017. Charlie is a Level 2 rugby coach and referee, and coaches on the Developing Player Programme with The Yorkshire Rugby Academy. Charlie is also a Level 1 Netball coach.

Georgia Hird – PGCE Teacher & Lead S&C Coach

Georgia has a degree in Sport and Exercise Science and is a certified Youth Strength & Conditioning coach having recently been heavily involved with professional cricket players at Yorkshire County Cricket Club. She currently works with the Yorkshire County Cricket Club Academy, Yorkshire Diamonds and the regional development centre. Georgia is also an accomplished middle-distance athlete having completed at county, regional and national level. Georgia will be undertaking her PGCE teacher training at Pocklington School through Buckingham University.

Angus Learmonth – Resident Sports Graduate & Assistant S&C Coach

Angus represented The Bishop's Stortford High School 1st XV during his time at school and went on to play for Hertfordshire County and become a part of the Saracens Academy for three years. After leaving school, he studied at Sheffield Hallam University where he captained the 1st XV and gained both his Level 2 Rugby refereeing and coaching qualifications. Angus also played cricket during his time at school and was selected to play for East Herts for four years.

Ben Byas – Resident Sports Graduate

As an Old Pocklingtonian himself, Ben was 1st XI Boys’ Hockey Captain and 1st XI Cricket keeper while at school. After leaving Pocklington, Ben has played for Wakefield Hockey Club 1st XI in the English National Hockey league for the last five years, while attending Loughborough University, where he was a member of the Coaching and Volunteering Academy. Moving onto Northumbria University in 2019 in the role of Head Hockey Coach for the University, he almost led the 1st XI women to a promotion berth in the British Universities & Colleges Sport Hockey League. For the past year, Ben has been responsible, alongside David Byas, for running a youth hockey coaching academy.

Chloe Scarth – Resident Sports Graduate

Chloe has a degree in Sports Development and coaches rugby in her free time at Whitby RFU. She has played rugby for Yorkshire and netball and athletics to district/county level. Her rugby career started when she was scouted for Yorkshire after attending a development day, going on to play for Teesside University and in her third year captained the team. Chloe also has a competitive rowing past where she competed in the Great London River Race.

Tris Hymers – Swimming, Rugby, Hockey & Cricket Coach

Tris is a competitive swimmer and last year ranked within the top ten Masters times in the UK and Europe. He achieved a number of titles in the 2018, 2019 seasons including East Midlands, Nottinghamshire, Durham and Northumberland 100m Masters Freestyle champion, along with gold medals for 100m Individual Medley at the East Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire regional championships. He qualified in multiple disciplines for the Swim England and British National Masters Championships, FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation) European Championships in Budapest 2019, and FINA Masters World Championships in Gwangiu Kore, as well as competing and placing at national youth level at 100m and 50m Free. Tris came 3rd and 4th respectively in the Men’s individual 200m and 100m Freestyle at the British National Masters Championships 2019. Formerly competing with Hythe, Grantham and , in recent years has trained with York Tri, Calverton and Bingham Swim Club (Nottingham), and currently represents York City Baths Club. Tris provides support across the games program at Pocklington School, coaching rugby, hockey, cricket and swimming.

Fiona Tuplin – Hockey, Netball & Rounders Coach

Fiona currently coaches at Hockey Club and Humberside girls’ U14 team. She is a Level 2 coach.

Carter Croft – Rugby Skills Coach

After having playing spells at Blackheath and London Irish, Carter moved to Australia to work with Queensland University. He has also spent time in New Zealand at the Hurricanes and with the USA National team and Oyonnax in Pro D2 France. He currently coaches at York Rugby Club.

Matt Ward – Tennis Coach

Having previously worked for the Lawn Tennis Association around Yorkshire and Head Coach at Pocklington Tennis Club, Matt now leads our senior tennis at Pocklington School. A Level 4 coach, he also runs his own coaching business.

Lydia Walker – Head of Netball Coaching

Lydia has been a part of the School’s netball programme since starting at Pocklington School in 2010 and is now the Head of Netball Coaching. She has an abundance of playing experience, playing for multiple teams and has represented Humberside county. Lydia currently plays for the first team of two local clubs, Stamford Bridge Vikings and Pockalypse, where she coaches and assists with umpiring. Lydia has also represented her county for swimming and hockey and has coached rounders and hockey at Pocklington School.
